Am i right in thinking I can do this? I've got some battered old who knows what drivers of about 4-600w with 3" VCs that are taking up space. At the most I'm dumping 190w into them. I'm just thinking of ripping it out and desk mounting it and maybe putting an old computer fan on it.
Is this a daft idea?

What ? You can't find a 4-8R/300W resistor ?

Just make sure that you don't overheat them. Your standard large dummy resistor comes on a former which helps dissipate the heat. Likewise the coil and the speaker magnet, etc. You could fit the coil on some sort of heatsink - and definitely add a fan or two. Edited by Earplug - 11 July 2020 at 6:25am |

Just some un branded pressed steel things that are probably at least 20 years old. We have a sheet roller at the workshop so I’ll roll an ali tube to sit snugly inside with a fan to cool. Cheers.

I wouldn't personally, unless you potentially don't mind losing whatever was connected to them under test if they melt. Voicecoils are not the hardiest things even with cooling.
If you dumped them in a bucket of oil they'd be ok. |

Yup and if you put enough power through that coil, you probably could really fry chips in it Edited by Peter Jan - 11 July 2020 at 9:58pm |

^^This, chuck them in a bucket of old engine oil, if engine oil can dissipate heat in an internal combustion engine which has an actual fire inside it then a voice coil shouldn't cause a problem... :)

Quite right, although if there were no oil in the engine it would die a lot quicker than if there were no coolant in it...
