I was browsing through the MC2 Audio website and found this

Obsolete Units Notification – As Of Jan 2018

Please note that, due to obsolescence of many parts of older amplifier designs, we can no long service or repair the following models:
MC 450, MC650, MC750,MC1250
TQ440, TQ425  (Turbosound branded MC Series)
AP800, AP1300 (Quested branded MC Series)

We still have a limited supply of some spares, so please email to enquire and we will try our best to help!

There are a few of these I have seen recently listed on eBay...

I suppose this is due to the output transistors that are well out of production.

they will have their reasons! Output transistors not a problem, things have moved on since these were designed.

They are out of anything related to power supplies in these units. Some other bits and bobs might be around, but for example 1250 PSU is completely out including PCBs.

Due to the global shift in power technology to the direction of switching conversion a decade ago, needs of linear devices have sharply declined. Semiconductor suppliers have cut production volumes, discontinued most of the power MOSFET, bipolar transistors and darlingtons for linear amplifiers. They have focused to more modern, faster and faster switching devices.

Be prepare that ALL of these power devices are going to disappear on the markets very soon.
It will make most of conventional (non switching) amplifiers UNREPAIRABLE!

Looks like my time to grab a smaller MC series bargain for home use is coming up!
Won’t be used at war volume, or bashed around in a van, so should last longer in a more sympathetic environment.

luckily the mc power supplies are pretty reliable. Nothing out of the ordinary apart from the winding switcher on the 1250

can't think of anything specifically. Mains transformer maybe, but I've never had one go. The thing with many uk manufacturers is that they often use off the shelf parts. The big capacitors possibly, but never had those go either.

Good of bad idea to buy a cheap 650 that’s not powering on?
Can solder well, ok at diagnosis.
Advice appreciated, love to have a working one!
