I have a cab loaded with PD.1852/2 which i would like to swap with PD.1845-1N to save on weight 

As far as i can see the specs look pretty similar but has anyone had any experience with both?

is their anything i should be aware of moving to neo's?

Compare the parameters, and the reduction in voice coil diameter, inevitably leads to very noticeable reduction in BL, and even worse, the loss of impact at 35-40hz.

Model with hornresponse or physical test, and it can be seen, whilst mid BL drivers (24-26), can have very smooth, uniform, flat response, 40-100hz, in many sub cabs, high BL drivers (30+), have the motor strength, to remain in control, at higher power input,  30 -  40hz. I first posted on this, at least 10x years ago.

Calculate the actual Xmax, given Voice coil winding depth, and magnetic gap depth, and the bad news continues.

This driver will be OK for some, and a compromise on 51/52 heritage, for others.

To upgrade from 1852, personally I would be looking at 18 sound/B&C, who are actually increasing Voice coil diam/BL/Flux density, not decreasing it.

All depends, the 1845-N1 has a motorscore of around 149 while the 1852/2 has a motorscore of 179. So yes, the 1852/2 has a stronger motor, but depending on you cabinet, you could want/use the extra xmax.

Going with a larger coil also means less travel for the soft parts (spider) with the same total spider diameter. That's mainly one of the reasons a lot of manufacturers still go for 4,5" VC's on 18" drivers. Just bigger VC in diameter does not mean more thermal capabilities on its own. Several other factors come into play.

The 1845-N1 clearly comes on top xmax wise. Also quite sure that would be the case in real life.

For the 1845N, didn't quite add up to 16mm for me, did not compare it to the old unit,

But PD have a history of "embellising" Xmax and Efficiency, in 18" driver specs.

No big deal really, if you get PD1852s reconed in the UK, by the right engineer, with UK made kit, in the right cab, they are an astonishing driver.

But when I previously upgraded to 18sound 18NLW9601, difference was night and day.

The calculation for 16mm xmax is clearly indicated in the specsheet. Using the older formulate you would get:

1852/2 --> 8,5mm
1845-N1 --> 11mm

But as said previousely. Regarding usable xmax I would definately bet on the 1845-N1. Just a more recent driver

No question, take the 1845 - but it would be great to know the cabinet. 

It will easily provide identical results in terms of SPL, probably even more, depends on power compression in the end ( 5" big ferrite magnet vs. 4,5" neo )

Who said they were out of production? Out of stock in the UK until sometime in February if my sources are correct.

We’ve contacted Thomann and PD directly and they are unable to supply, as they have move onto the 2N version. However, they’ve changed some minor details, meaning we cannot utilize this model to finish our series of equipment.

If you know of a way to get our hands on them, do let us know! Would be greatly appreciated

Paulus just done a a/b with both drivers couple weeks ago. As you said lev on the lows the old 52 completly outplayed it.
Sound Hire/Sales new/used equipment.
