i just looked up the manual for the peavey cs800 in the vintage amps thread (very helpfull by the way) and noticed that the picture is of a different model to ours.

ours looks like an older model ( a real antique in fact )  is the spec the same for the later model ? was it just the case they changed? any info appreciated.

The older 4 rack space models are rated the following;

240 watts per channel from 20 - 20 KHz @ 8 ohms 0.04% THD

400 watts per channel from 20 - 20 KHz @ 4 ohms 0.04% THD

Frequency Response: 5 Hz - 40 KHz +0/-1 dB

Under today's wattage specs, you can easily call this a 1000 watt amplifier.

Best Regards,

If you use this setup for a long time with no issues (Damaged compression drivers) continue to use it. Some people are good at feeding drivers close to four times the rating of a speaker without damage. And then there are those that never learn and continue to damage every and any speaker.

Best Regards,

Is your 'old' peavey cs 800 the one were you remove the top cover and see two main heatsinks with row's of out put trannes facing you!
If so, that model date's back to mid to late 1970's and you'll see two large blue caps on the left hand side 1500uf at 90vdc.
if it works leave it be!

These old Peavey amps date from the mid `70s as Amptech says..they were well made in the USA,and a quality item when new, unlike the moderm peavey nonsense.
If yours is still going strong, there is no reason why it shouldnt continue, just hoover out the bugs and spiders from the heatsinks and fan occassionally.
My other favourite from this era was the old Bose P1800,similar sort of power to the peavey, and weighs like an elephant.
Be seeing you.

the only difference is the pots on that look a bit different , on ours you can pull them out (or push them in i cant remember which why round it is to use the limiting/protection feature . pretty ahead of its time for the 70's.

The limiter's on these amp's are done by pulling the level volume pot's out ward's.
The one I worked on years's ago had 24 o/p trannie's and a small triac pcb board linked across the binding output post and it's problem was dry joint's/lose connection plug's and s/c triac.
if it works leave it be!

The Peavey CS 800 ranged from 1976 - 1988 using the four rack model.
The one pictured is the 1986 (C) Series. That is the final series before they moved on to the 3 space version in 1989.

There was a time when the CS 800 offered no DDT (Earliest Model) and, read "Overload" -> Clipping/Compression -> Out Clipping/DDT Active above the gain controls on the face plate.

The range of compression is based on the input gain controls once enabled. It offers up to 20 decibels of Compression if you keep the gains wide open and declines if you lower the gain settings (For example 12'o clock 10 dB).

The amplifier also has a built in protection circuitry if you feed a frequency below 5 Hz located on the outputs.

Years ago I got a got the thermal shutdown capacity from Aubrey from Peavey on all their CS 800's. He/She said that the four rack models would thermal protect at 200 degrees.

Best Regards,
