Does anyone have anymore info on these, here being used by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, at Oakland Stadium, July 1974. Designed by Cal Perkins, run by FM Productions stadium sound system. (legendary concert promoter Bill Graham funded that production company).
I can't find any more info online about these, but would be an interesting read if anyone has anymore? Going by the stagehand next to them, each mouth is around 5 foot x 8 foot, loaded with JBL (i assume D130s or 140s as the ali centre caps are just visible). Hate to think what they weighed.  |

I couldn't find any info on the horns, but found this photo of the gig at Oakland stadium. If you look carefully at the upper right-hand side you can just see the curve of the monster horns.
Now thats a big crowd!

Yup, that's the ones. Here is another photo, you can see the rear chamber housing the four 15" drivers, wonder how they transported these? Was the rear chamber detachable for moving? Sorry the picture isn't good quality. had to zoom right in to see.
Just for scale, is a bank of 4550 2x15's to the right, those are big cabinets, but look small in comparison.

I've never seen them before, very interesting. If you look at the inside surfaces of the horns, they appear to have some clips (or maybe screwed wood blocks) joining the outermost extension to the flare. I would expect them to have been made in several sections and assembled on site, probably transported with the sections nesting inside each other. I wonder if the back end was a standalone bass bin, with the extra bits added specially for events of this scale. Edited by madboffin - 18 May 2024 at 10:26pm |

Talking about 4x15 horns---RSD used to have their own hire company before they went into full scale production on the amps and they designed and built some compact(well it was back then) 4x15 boxes that were horn loaded with Gauss I think and they only measured about one metre cube and were edged flightcase style.
I remember seeing Showaddywaddy with one of the RSD rigs in the 1970s and the botton end punch and throw was very impressive and was on par with anything that Dave Martin was building at that time |

I remember the RSD kit with the flightcase edging - early / mid 70's. I think Paul Dobson owned the company, Phil Dudderidge and Graham Blyth were involved for a while, before they set up Soundcraft. |

Slightly off-topic, but I "zoomed-in" to take a look at the horns used for covering the back of the stadium. They are in the centre of the photo, with the monster 4x15" bass horns to the right.  screen shot downloadI think that they are JBL 2356. You can see the circular JBL badges in the middle of each horn. I looked at the spec for these and they are huge. 42cm high x 84cm wide x 124cm deep. The efficiency is quoted at 119dB for 1 Watt at 1 metre!!!  Edited by APC321 - 19 May 2024 at 6:23pm |

Yes, that's the ones. Was the standard long-throw device back then, fit the double throat adapter, and pair of phenolic 2482 drivers, reckon you could mow grass with them. Here is a couple in the centre, supplied by Showco/Jands for Led Zeppelin in Sydney.

Appears to be in a similar size category with what the german REALHORNS system is doing for "midbass" with their water-cooled modular 6 x 15" flower petal style horns.
