I bench tested a PKN XD4000 1U class D amplifier the other day, here's a link to the results. There's some other stuff I tested that we didn't at the amp meet.... I'll be putting some more things on there soon.......
(and yes, I did measure the mains)

I'm not sure the distortion you mention on the crests of the waveforms at full power is really distortion as such. I'm no expert on Class D but I have chatted with people who are about other designs. The Tripath based amps for example show exactly the same when driven to maximum output voltage. My understanding is that it's actually the switching frequency, the carrier you could say appearing on the output rather than actual distortion.
We may be singing from the same hymn sheet but I just think it might be misleading to call it distortion. |

looks like distortion to me.
That's the best waveform on a class D i have seen, by A very long way. got to hand it to PKN very good. There will be several other class D amp makers that will be Very worried with the work that PKN have done as it could well set a new standard for class D and make there work look ![]() |

Let's see how long it takes them to starting talking PKN down, even though a few on here started it already without hearing it.. ![]() |

Let's see what to expect... 1. PKN domains get nicked. 2. Someone put's up biased amp test, on authored on competitor's company computer, 3. Biased amp test, with measurements for PKN taken at different settings 4. Picture of PKN sabotaged put up, stating "it did that on its own" 5. Someone states his mate's sister's dog's uncle knows they are Labg copies, and where they are made in China. 6. Hungary does'nt have electricity, so does'nt know how to make amps. 7. Amp isn't made in England, so it's Chinese. Edited by levyte357 - 02 May 2010 at 6:21pm |

You're a big man, but you're in bad shape. With me it's a full time job. Now behave yourself.

That is very good value for money for the power output. These are not stable at 2ohms though are they? |

and thats including VAT!
would like to hear the 6000
apparently they are 2 ohm stable under dynamic conditions, but as these are bridged channels already, a 2 ohm load would be seen as a 1 ohm load each side. PKN has stated that no extra power is available into a 2 ohm load
In reality, the fact that max output is available to 4 ohms makes this more useful than the vast majority of high powered amps where a 2 ohm load is required to take advantage of the power.
looking at the 6000, the rated power of 3600w @ 4 ohm is up there with very big amps like the FFA 10K and others. Edited by csg - 02 May 2010 at 8:03pm |
