hello... I was looking at som PD speaker , and i found the new PD neo driver ( PDN.12MH25). Would this work in a porn horn? http://www.papl.co.uk/showdetails.asp?id=70 I have read about the det polar problem in the HF section (causing interference when stacking two or more boxes per side), can i get around this by using the PD driver and cross higher? (the PD driver stays flat to almost 5k) Sorry for my bad english. I am from Norway |

id imagine the porn horns phase plug not matching that driver. and x-ing to the h-f driver any higher than the recomended freq id imagine the horn being "too big" ie its designed for a certain frequency! [120hz-1.? khz] hope that helps. could try that driver in the mt122 maybey? |

hi tom, as coner says the phase plug will be shaped to the contour of the sn12b, so other 12" drivers may not fit, although you could call up and ask.
you are very very unlikely to get a 12" that has a good off axis polar response up to 5k. and thats the problem, also distortion becomes a prominent factor. when you try to get the same driver to cover such a wideband response as 130hz to 5k you will have problems. i think the lobing affect probably comes from the hi frequency horn, from the look of it, i'd imagine it has a very tight polar response and therefore doesnt mate up that well with other top horns placed next to it throughout its frequency range, and incorrectly angled arraying will not help. it is not "too big" al |

That PD driver might well work well in a horn but maybe not the porn horns.
Check out the Limmer horns (some are on speakerstore.nl) and the janaudio.com horns should be available soon for other options. |

id like to point out that the only reason i know this is because i asked someone about the pd123er in a porn or similar type cab. if you do want to build from scratch and think yiu can make the phase plug yourself then id imagine a "porn horn" type thing to be possible. but it wouldnt be a porn [thats a brand name] but itd be effectively the same thing. [but youd be making an mt122 out of fiber glass]

minaximal sory when i said big i meant its tuned for that frequency rang so what he might be looking for is prolly a 3 way set up [now i am prolly wrong!] "big" was as you said the terminology. sory! |

ok... but does anybody have any ideas on how the polar problem i the hf horn can be eliminated? Can i use another hf horn.... like the selenium HL14-50? (Wich has a much better polar control at 2khz compared to the HF Porn horn) |

afaik there are no polar plots for the hf porn horn yet? the selenium has a very narrowowing dispersion look at 8khz or 16khz it may be even worse or the same, but it is too short a horn to properly load as low as 600hz as stated. the porn horn tops were designed to compliment the mids, and will probably work better together, also a 2" comp driver will probably be too much for a single sn12b.
at the end of the day the porn horns were never specifically designed to be arrayed with perfect dispersion, and there aren't many top horns for tight controlled narrow dispersion out there, but they are probably a great compromise, for the price, especially in contrast to other big brand expensive off the shelf designs. i'm going to use the limmer 30x40 on a proto project, this could work, but its also a 2" and would be wasted with the sn12b.. i have other plans |

http://www.speakerplans.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1765&a mp;a mp;KW=porn+plots http://homepage.ntlworld.com/happydommo/files/hipornpolar.jp g i found that one.. as you can see. there is a very good polar control down to about 2k.. I know i cant expect perfect polar patterns from horns like this, but can i array porn horn cabs without to much interference? Edited by Tom Erik - 03 March 2006 at 11:47pm |
