Well, the length is roughly 800mm, height is around 300mm so far - so thats 850 corner to corner + 50mm or whatever for the wheel is 900mm - should be alrite I guess... Gonna mock it all up properly to check though!
yeah, wheels are gonna be something like http://www.bluearan.co.uk/index.php?id=ADH3755&browsemode=category but soft rubber versions .. will probably go on a b&q hunt or something 12mm does sound better
. your ghetto blaster should look awesome when its done - hope you're gonna bling it all up proper, lol :] |

Yep, I find the battery last longer than expected too. ![]() When camping last weekend, we had my MP3 player on for 10 hours easily, fairly loud, and the battery was still going strong, and it's only 4.4Ah... I was very surprised as I thought it would only last 5 hours max. Nice work making custom boxes. I feel lazy now, just gaffer taping some hifi speakers together and powering them from a Tripath car amp! ![]() Good 12mm ply is great, light and if you brace it will be strong. I've built horns and MT121's, all from 12mm and it works a treat. Edited by MikeHunt79 - 15 June 2009 at 11:13pm |

I'm English, and as such I crave disappointment. I actively seek it out.

Started on the new 'bling' system yesterday. 12" in small refex cab. a matching sized cabinet with horn loaded mid and high is next. I plan on having posibility of a modular 4 box system that will work with a single bass + mid/high cab, or two basses and 1 mid/high, or all four boxes.
i have started the main structure for the mid horns as you can see(mdf). these will be shaped with epoxy filler/polyester filler and painted black. the kevlar mids will be on show. all of the cabs will remain in varnished birch ply. ill probably purchase some light grey acoustic foam to protect, but ideally i want the bling factor to be on view..

Lookin' good! You may want to make your own thread though? (Not trying to kick you out of this, but it probably deserves its own and will make your posting easierr)Oh, where is the best / cheapest place in Bristol for Birch ply? I always used to use avon timbers... but I know they arent all that cheap :(

Right, got loadsa stuff on the way now :) Been toying with WinISD, and have come up with the following: ![]() Got a couple of questions though ![]() 1. what exactly is the 'tuning frequency'? ![]() 2. Even when I put 50w through the 8" and 30w through the 6", there is still a 10db difference at 400hz.. As I'm hoping to cross them at this frequency is this an issue? Or will it easily be solved by fiddling with the gains on the xover / you wont really be able to hear it? 3. How does the graph look for the 8"? Have fiddled with it to get some good sound from 45-100hz .. Or am I aiming too low and would be better to aim for 60-120? I would like it to be able to play down to 45 though ![]() Edited by subbass - 20 June 2009 at 1:39pm |

from looking at the thiels of the skytronic 8" driver, i have a feeling they are not quite right. personally, id look at thiels of a driver like this: http://www.usspeaker.com/beyma%208G40-1.htm
and maybe input them into winisd. from my experiences with the skyronic units, they seem to suggest specs similar to the beyma 8g40.

It's really hard to build precisely on a small scale as well, not putting down the fact that you modeled it but someone recently said to build the box too big and experiment.... good advice i think, even if you end up rebuilding at some point.
I was playing around earlyer and think i prefer the sound of my 12v system with no active xover, sounds fuller/greater perceived loudness without. Whatever the computer/theoretical physics says trust your ears more.

yo mike
i just tested one of the ten laptop batteries i bought.. didnt show any voltage on the + and - terminals and i was really gutted. i then opened up and bypassed the internal circuit. fires up my 12v strobe with no problems so looks like i might be onto a winner.
starting to get a little worried about playing around with such dangerous items though. other than shorting the batteries, what else could cause them to catch fire/explode? i dont want to do anything stupid. also, where do you suggest i keep the cells when not in use and during charging? i been thinking about sourcing a suitable alu box i can machine in some terminals so the batteries are constantly sealed in a metal case..

Talking of batteries - I think I've found a great way to get loads of 24Ah jobbers for free :)
basicly, at golf courses they use ~24Ah deep cycle 'powercaddy' batteries (yuasa / generic ones with a connector attached to top). These are only ever any good for them if they can do the whole 18 holes.. SO, they have to throw them away / pay for them to be taken away pretty soon after they go into use.... Went to two golf courses today on the way home today and now have three 22/24 batteries sitting by me, including a pretty nice yuasa 24Ah deep cycle... ![]() edit: got a 12v charger in the post, will see if they're any good once ive charged em up

great idea man. been trying to 'wake up' a heavily discharged yuasa 17ah battery this week. the charger wouldnt even register the battery had been connected so i ran the charge with it connected in parallel to a functional battery. it now gives about 12ah as far as my tests have shown (leaving it running an amp idle over night with a 1a idle current draw).
care to share by pm where you recon i might be able to get a pair of batts from in the same way you did? did they have any left? if you wanna borrow my charger, its a really good one with computer control. it has settings to restore deeply discharged batteries. 14.4v for standard charge and 14.7v for problem batteries. might be worth using to jolt your batteries back to life a bit..
