Hey everyone,
I have a 4-way setup and I have been using a Citronic PPX900 for my mids, powering two Fane Sovereign 12-250TC drivers in sealed cabs, in stereo at 8ohm. It was built primarily as a 80's reggae sound system, but it tends to have everything from D&B to house played through it. The clarity of the mids are really important to me, and I have a fondness for old mos-fet amps, etc. I absolutely love the sound of these Fane TC drivers and the PPX so have been happy with the setup, but the A channel has just stopped working. I do have another 900 but that has a slight issue on the B channel! I have been using nothing but old Citronic amps up until recently, when I swapped out my PPX1600 for a Peavey CS1200X to do both my scoops and kicks. I have a PPX1200 that I could use instead of the 900 but it is a load heavier than the 900, and what with CS1000X my back has some work to do as it is. Also, I would like to get the 900's fixed as they are no use to me with one channel down. Anyway, my question is whether there's something that may be better than the 900 that I don't realise? I'm not familiar with all the amps, but have heard mention of HH M900, C-Audio SR606 and Matrix 2U1200 to name a couple. Would be great to hear anyone's thoughts on this. Thanks, Scott. |

Theres a pretty tidy PPX900 on ebay at the minute. I would grab that then get the others fixed. Great amps and will just keep going if looked after.

Thanks for the reply Simon. I was looking at the SR707 as a replacement for the PPX1600. Thought that the 606 may be a better substitute for the 900. And heard you can mod it to be a 707 if it has the right transformer. I have a saved search on ebay, but not had one turn up that wasn't a massive distance to travel.

I have seen a Matrix on ebay. It looks a bit battered, but the specs are okay. Think 350W at 8 ohm, which I guess would be a bit more powerful than the PPX900 but still not too much for the 250W drivers. Just not heard anything about the sound quality. Would be interested to know what people thought of them?

Thanks for the reply. I have seen it, but it's a bit of travel for me. Would mean a day off work and fuel to travel to Leicester and back. Ends up being quite expensive.
Think I could use the 1200 as a temp amp whilst I get the 900 fixed. Prefer the sound of the 900's over the 1200 on the mids for some reason though.

Having a bit more power in the boot should not be a problem, as long as you use you ears - and don't push the amp into clip. I've never used a Matrix, but they do seem to have a good rep - and relatively easy to service/fix. ![]() |

PPX900 needs proper restoration these days...very old amplifiers, you need to spend a full day tu fully restore to his glory a PPX900 and after that you're sorted for another 30+ years....also the best Sounding Mosfet Amplifiers are by far HH M900-V800 compared to: Citronic PPX series,C Audio SR,ST,TA series,Avitec Beta Series,Matrix UKP,2U,STR series,Even old RSD Studiomaster Mosfet series,i own dozens of Mosfet lateral Amplifiers, including ASHLY FET2000m series,BK Electronics MXF Series etc,but the sound of my M900's is the one that i have nothing better to compare with.
