Looking for ideas on best affordable speaker with lots of bass potential.  He would like an open air box I believe is what he said.  So it can breath. 1, 12 inch speaker. And an amp that will supply him enough bass to rattle his brain. Personally not my thing. But he really enjoys loud music and good bass. Would like something that hears both the highs and lows. I'm totally green. No idea where to look or where to start. Hoping that you awesome guys and gals can send me to where I need to go. What I need to buy. Or whatever else I may need to be told. Please everyone. Help a girl out. Would like to stay under 500. 300 would be more like it, but I'm not sure that's not reachable.

Sounds like a second hand Soundboks would be the way to go. It's a danish product, and I don't know where you can get it outside Denmark.

Loud, portable, amp onboard. Can run on power from an outlet or on the build-in battery for a decent amount of time.

But here is a website to get you started

What constitutes good sound is very subjective so any suggestions may or may not be suitable for your boyfriend’s needs. The intended purpose of the speaker also has a bearing on choice. Is this for a home system? Does it need to be portable? Do you need a speaker with a built-in amplifier? What is the music source, vinyl, Bluetooth, or something else?

I know that these questions might seem to be making things more confusing, but I guess that the best outcome for you is getting something that your boyfriend is happy with, rather than something that some random guy on an internet forum thought might be good based on their opinions and assumptions, but turns out to be a disapointment.

I will now make the assumption that your boyfriend has some interest in audio, and has his own thoughts on an ideal system. If your present doesn’t need to be a surprise you could just ask him what he would like. He might even prefer adding to your contribution to get a more expensive set up. If it does need to be a surprise you just need to be more cunning or enlist the help of one of his friends to get the information. You mentioned an open-air box, does he have some particular brand, or design in mind? Open air, to me suggests an open baffle (the actual drive unit is mounted on a flat baffle, with no box), which is a rather niche category, at the pricier end of the market. I could be wrong, which is sort of my point. Based on my assumption I offer the wrong advice.

If you could let us know what music genres he is into, there are bound to people here that can relate to that style and what systems are preferred.

Good luck.
