Bristol Sound Clash - Part 1 - RC1 vs Void powered by Neuron

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
 Date: 22/12/17
Location: Trinity Centre, Trinity Road, Bristol. BS2 0NW
 Price: Earlybirds £12.50 / Tier 1 £15.50 / Tier 2 £17.50
 Tickets: Afterdark.co
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

Fresh new night to hit Bristol where we are putting Sound System against Sound System to see who comes out on top, winner stays on.

Opening proceedings will be two absolute heavyweights in Void & RC1 who both will be bringing a wall of bins to fill out the Trinity Centre. Each stack will run down the sides of the venue both facing each other.

No Lineup will be advertised before the night.

Both rigs will be bringing an absolute stella lineup of artists but for us to do this and not affect their committments to other nights throughout the city we won't be announcing the acts until you arrive at the venue.

Music styles will be from Dub all the way through to Drum & Bass.

Hosted By Krazy

Pretty much limited by what we can drag out of the wall – which is a 63A 3 phase. Each.

Not much of a clash then as the whole wall with anything will destroy the punters and venue. Let alone decent equipment boxes drivers etc. So really its about which system cares the least about the punters and is willing to blow their ear drums. Roots and dub systems go in there with 6 sub cabs each.

I'm sure it will be fun but I hope both sides maintain some level of professionalism

Trinity is also a lovely venue for Bristol so I hope there aren't issues as a result of this.

Got my tickets. Anyone wanna recommend a hotel nearish?

It's very near the City Centre there, so many large chain hotels, if you go up west Street/Old Market (A420 into the city center) you'll hit Old Market roundabout; with the Marriott City Centre acoss the roundabout on the right.

Alternately go back to the Lawrence Hill roundabout (right by the Trinity Centre) and take the dual c'way back to the M32 and turn left to go into the City Centre.  Follow that straight into town and follow the dual c'way round to the right - you'll get to St James Barton roundabout (with The Bearpit in the centre of it).

On that roundabout you have the choice of a Premier Inn, Holiday Inn City Centre (I'll be in there doing a Christmas party until 1am, with the least amount of kit that I can get away with), and right next door to that a Hampton by Hilton.

When my daughter comes to visit she normally stays at one of the b&b's that line one side of Cheltenham Road (A38)

We do work there other times too remember. I know we might have broken Lakota in the past but we were young and foolish! I’ve actually got three calibrated SPL mics in our pack...

On our side at least it’ll be filled partly because the cabinets are so huge.

Seriously considering joining from Italy!
I have read little about RC1 but i have followed NPA here on SP.
if i get it right i am expecting ...
old irons (ca-18 on subs) vs Powersoft k20 / x
one large band reflex ? vs separated kick sub horns or hybrids

Never heard Incubus or rc1, now Toasty if you could set up an afterpaty with some Danley gear, that would make the pilgrimage incredibleBig smile
Jokes apart, is there some Danley installed in Bristol?
Is the 4 AM closing enforced or usually the party goes on? i see a return flight SAT 7.20 from bristol airport, but it would be a shame to leave the place with the party going on...

I would expect Jamill from the Trinity to employee Paul King or one of his boys to be on site to act in the interests of the Trinity Centre.

I thought this was a direct shootout between Incubus and RC1, i here there is going to be a stack of Nexus xls between the Incubus stacks, after reading some comments that Incubus will flatten RC1 i wonder why Kyle feels it needs a stack of 21inch Nexus xl as well.

Posted By: cravings
Date Posted: 12 December 2017 at 10:33am
i got the impression they're both bringing the biggest systems they can, kinda. i doubt it'll be a very technical clash. but should be fun. i've considered coming over.. flights have got pricey though and it's a busy season for guys like us, so i doubt i'll make it.

It's a former church with a large amount of church estate surreounding it.

Get there early enough the car park at the trinity centre is a pay and display car park.
It’s not very big though way less than 100 cars.
Over the far side of the trinity is where most supplier vans park as you can back up tight to the fence.
Avoid the dark back street of parking around the old market area as it’s not great.

There is nice semi sensible parking that will take a LWB sprinter by the grain barge but it’s a mission across town.

Well that was stupidly good fun, hats off to RC1, their rig was a monster. If we had their spot it would have been a fairer fight but Jon has built a beast. No stranger to heavy boxes, but you definitely need your weetabix for them racks and stacks.

I’ll see what I can clear of the recording because we knew 16 of their bins put us at a serious handicap, and some of the plates our friends did were immense. You genuinely had to be there.

Sorry to all SP people I barely saw, was having a mare doing multiple jobs at once.

You ve had too much painfull ~70hz too few 35hz. At first I thought mid was distored and you had too hard crossovers but later it went away. The pressure was just soo unimaginable on tops. Anyway too flat on this spl level. What were the crossovers?

Posted By: Aman Gebru
Date Posted: 23 December 2017 at 6:50am
Why did you use 3 types of bass cabs running the same band.

And I'm not including the Hyperfolds here as they would have been used for upper bass.

Surely you got smashed because RC 1 didn't run with different cabs doing the same band. There ain't no FIR filters that can sum different sub cabs over there entire bandwidth.

A fun night had by all.

Posted By: Aman Gebru

This clash was happening on the same night between Elements 5 and Void. The Void system smashed it and even had to turn off 2 bass cabs later on in the night to make it a bit farer.

12 Stasys X V2 against RC 1's 16, and you would have killed them.

Having a 4m cavity behind the stack basically meant we had our rig halfway into the room, so there was some serious cancellation off the back wall. Not ideal. In future clashes will need to have split up sets but we wanted a wall of bass effect.

Also we use this rig for Outlook in a similar configuration so it was nice to bring it on home turf. The RC1 isn’t your average bin trust me, there’s a lot more inside than just some cones.

Brilliant night. I much preffered the Void sound, it was a lot more balanced and smoother. The RC1 bins were fun though. Sadly most of the Void bass was ending up in the cloakroom but there was a hella lot of it, it was stealing the air outta my lungs in front of the stacks at one point. Was also pleasantly surprised by how good the incubus air arrays were. Gain a lot of respect for RC1 though (apparently they were only playing at 5% LOL) seriously though it's a great system to be stood in front of. That said at the end of the night I much preferred the plates played on the RC1, but preffered the Void system.

I'd like to see a sound clash where the systems are powered from a slot meter.
You have as long as £1 lasts to impress the crowd.

Wonder how long those CA18s would go for.

Oh thats why my ears were distorting those incubus mids
Yea incubus was flatter thanks to this rc1 was more user friendly. With mids little in back and no painfull high bass
One more artistic photo

Btw I loved the crossover mid high on RC1. Was perfect.

So did either of the rigs get destroyed with a hammer by an angry engineer in the end or not?

Still think 16 x XV2 vs 16 X RC1 subs would have been an more comparable fight

Though I wasn't there so can't comment

Lol, so you don't think 18 21 inch drivers on sub, plus the hyperfolds was enough? Kyle has said elsewhere that two Incubus rigs may not beat Rc1, I was there with the Rc1 rig and there was a lot more to come if needed, most look at the bins and assume they are just double 18 reflex, they are very clever hybrids designed and built by Jon, once you have heard them going hard at it at 30hz with massive impact you know they are special, just ask Kyle.

So whats inside RC1?
Was shining there with flashlight (including tops), couldnt see a thing. Should have put my hand across the brs to check if they are real
Are those 18"? 21"? 24"?

Not quite what I said, more that we couldn’t afford to bring that in with budget available even if we wanted to. But it’s still way less ‘drivers’ even if it’s similar physical size

So "you" dont want to be called no 1 soundsystem despite budget?

Garry asked if both Incubus systems could beat it, you replied maybe maybe not, it's on Rc1s Facebook page 😁

32 x drivers in the same boxes playing the same frequency band (RC1)

vs

16 x XV2 = (32 drivers) playing the same frequency band (void)

Just seems like a more "fun" comparison to me

The void setup that kyle took, is still multiple different drivers and boxes playing different (overlapping) frequency bands, that needs manipulation to sound "right". Kyle is a genius at doing this no doubt, but 16 boxes all playing the same frequency (RC1) needs less magic to sound "right"

Hence why having 16 x XV2s would have been more "interesting", or even 16 x Psychos .......

Just a suggestion.
Why don`t you invite a star? Someone who would agree playing right tunes for Clash. We will have more amazing show and you will sell tickets for a soundsystem

I know the crowd voted RC1 but all bass with tops so distorted that you couldnt make out the lyrics doesn't do it for me... Void had immense depth and clarity compared to Rc1, so Void won it all day for me. They had unfortunate positioning though, if the soundsystems had swapped sides I have no doubt that Neuron would of won.

I would also be interested to see rc1 16x bins vs. Void 16x Stasys Xv2

Were the tops actually distorting or was the amount of bass making it seem like they were distorting?

Eh?

Both sides had serious headliners who played in secret for way less than usual fees - which they all spent on specials and dubplates just for this show.

Are those RC1 basses tapped horns? Ports are fake?

Just saw this thread, nice to see an interest in what we were doing!

Mids and tops were peaking about -12 db from limit thresholds on the Omnidrive, they were not turned up loud at all and there was no significant distortion whatsoever. The mid/top did seem distorted at times on the dance floor because the bass/sub was overmodulating peoples ears (exceeding the ear’s x-max so to speak). This was less of a problem with the other system as they played less heavy on the bottom end. Not ideal, but what could I do about it? The crowd wanted the bassweight. Can anyone offer a solution to providing bassweight so heavy that it overmodulates the ears, but without it causing the ears to perceive the music as distorted? Surely other people on here with powerful rigs must be familiar with this problem?

I noted a comment earlier in the thread about flatness of response as well. We can play the rig with a flat response, but it is not the most pleasing of sounds at high spl. We deliberately eq the rig a little differently to be more sympathetic to the human ear and make it as pleasurable as possible to listen to at high spl. Also, of course as this was a bass soundclash we also applied a bit of boost at the bottom with a 12db/octive boost from 50hz down, so by the time the music got down past 40 and towards 30hz the pressure was ridiculous, and we were “digging the graves” as another system owner told us on the night!

Was a really fun night, and reminded me how lucky and proud I am to be involved in the Sound System scene with a respectable rig that I designed and hand built myself from scratch (even if the shiny grills and logos are pig ugly haha!). That’s what “sound system” is all about.

Happy Christmas everyone, I hope you all have good ones, and I hope to have the pleasure of catching up with some of you next year :-)
