Hi! A year ago I started buiding a 12V minirig to make small parties for about 20 people (mostly electronic music), which worked relatively nicely. 3 months ago a friend and me decided it was time to update the klipsch 10'' hifi sub that we were using until then and decided to build two THAM12s. We changed the measures to match our wood choice, 19mm black MDF (and screwed up big time the first time with the cuts...). Due to weight constrains, we decided to get the B&C 12ndl76, in the end the finished cabs weights in at 27kg. The build was not easy, but we learned a ton from this first time and would do many things better the next one.

Oh, and along the way we build a custom amplifier that delivers 2x120W to the tops (right now some bookshelf speakers from ELAC which don't sound bad) and 2x250W to the two THAMs: The THAMs are highpassed at 45Hz and play until 80 or 135Hz, which i can adjust with two Linkwitz Riley active crossovers depending of the music we wanna play.

Now I'm sharing this with you as this forum together with some others taught me a lot in the last couple of months!

The screw terminals are the weak spot of the project... we improvised a bit since in the beginning we wanted to connect the amp directly to the driver but then we decided that it'd look better with the terminals on the back... and we didn't want to wait a week till we could continue with the build. For the next build it'll be speakons for sure!

I have a 500W boost stage and a 2x200W T-Amp from them, am really happy with them, although now the 2x200 (which is in reality more 2x120) are getting a little short to come along the subs. Am thinking of getting a 1x500W for the mids and using the 2x200 for the highs when I build the tops, which will be bi-amped.

If I was building 12v tops again, I'd use Faital Pro 4FE 4" drivers, probably two or three in a box on an angled baffle for good dispersion. This would be lighter but have almost the same output. 

You may or may not want a tweeter - they go up to 15kHz which is about high enough really, and if you have multiple units arrayed, you might even get better dispersion in the VHF than from a single horn or dome tweet.

I use the 2x300 watt boards with that same 500 watt power supply. According to my measurements, they actually do 160 watts per channel into 4 ohms before going into overcurrent protect mode, or about 22 volts RMS. That experiment (1 channel driven with 1000Hz sine wave into 4r) produced a ~25 amp draw from my 4s lithium batteries, indicating a total system efficiency of only about 50% - not the 80+% indicated on the spec sheets. So they are pretty good, but not QUITE as good as claimed....

Damn, those measurements don't speak all that well about these little boards... but I'm still pretty happy with mine! Gonna be ordering 2x300 or 2x400 soon. I wonder whether the 500w boost stage can really output 500w...? In that case, I'd go for the 2x400, otherwise 2x300 should play the trick as well...

Thanks for the line array idea! I definitely like the idea because of its simplicity and size. How would be the kickbass be when playing outside? I'd need to hear them once, somehow it's hard for me to believe that a couple of 4'' can create any 'feelable' kick...

Right now I'm considering building half an mkt230, although some more compact desing with maybe one 10'' driver would better suit my needs. Does anyone know of such a design?

Hi! Just wanted to update this a bit, I ended up getting a pair of Turbosound ip82 as tops, as theyre super cheap and perfect for my needs... Also got s 2x400W from Sure electronics to run them. The combination is great!!

Ever since I build my Cubo 15 I have been very interested in tapped horn designs. Bet the Tham 12 sounds good. 

Would you say that there is a lot of bass from a small system like this? Do you feel the bass clearly?

I needed to keep things small so I chose the more compact tham design, otherwise I was also considering building a cubo. Am not disappointed :)

Thay Beyma looks very good, if you have the power it need it will surely be a good match. But it costs double as much as the b&c ndl76, and if you account for both power and loudspeaker, the whole thing will cost you probably 4x as much.

I'm very happy with the 12ndl76 performance!!
