Hi All,

We are trying to repair our good old 5002VZ amp.
The power supply capacitors need to be replaced.
However, it seems that crown used custom parts here.
Here are the specs according to what is written on it:

BC D7882-0

15000uF -10% +50%

110VDC 135 SURGE

+85C MAX AMBIENT

658-0519-301

Does anybody know where we can find replacement capacitors ?

Thanks,

Rgds

Out of interest what makes you think the capacitors need replacing? I've never needed to replace any on an Amcron or Crown.
The main problem, as I'm sure you have already discovered is that 110V capacitors of this size are hard to come by as they are a very expensive item to keep in stock, You should be expecting to pay between 100 and 150 pounds for a pair, more at reputable dealers, expect fakes from other sources. Might be worth double checking you need them...

Wot he said ... I've seen many of these pass through the workshop for repair, I can't remember any of them ever needing a primary smoothing cap changed. Would be interesting to know why you think they are need replacement.  I wouldn't rely on any capacitance measuring meter on caps this large, it will probably just show an error.

I have some that might do - if you really need them. You need one more post to send/receive Private Messages. Do that and I can send you photos/info, etc.  Smile

If they are good quality, as used to be back then, they might be just fine and no need for replacements.

My 1970's crown DC300A has original caps and still going strong as well as my many other old amps.
Some small electrolytics, small signal transistors and zeners needed to be changed tho.

I just bought one off E-bay, coming from China... Let's hope the packages from china keep coming with this coronavirus going around

More to the point, let's hope they are not repackaging crappy ones in a nice tin, like a lot do with batteries.

That would surely suck....

They're marked as USED and From the picture it looks like they've been pulled from an amp...

I'm hopeful.

Well that seller is garbage, he doesn't have them.

I contacted our local crown rep to see if they can still get them but I somehow doubt they do.

Otherwise I'll need to find something that fits in there :(

Mistakes were made during, the cap received reverse voltage and then released it's pressure in a nice cloud of electrolyte Confused

If they will fit, Mouser sell 160volt 15000uF +/- 20%  (Nippon United Chemi-com branded) caps for £22.78+vat each, the caps are designed for use in high ripple current situations (think Inverters), they have an ESR of 14.9mOhms @ 120hz and a ripple current of 15.5Amps. They measure 63mm x 105mm

Mouser part number:  661-E36D161LPN153MDA

Mfr. No. E36D161LPN153MDA5M

I'm not so sure 63mm dia will fit.

From the e-bay posting I believe the originals are 45mm (dia.) x 105mm tall .. but I will measure them when I get home today

I found these on digikey but they are pretty pricy and 50mm but that might fit anyway although at 100v they are under the rating...

https://www.digikey.ca/product-detail/en/vishay-bc-components/MAL210119153E3/4365PHBK-ND/2202389" rel="nofollow - https://www.digikey.ca/product-detail/en/vishay-bc-components/MAL210119153E3/4365PHBK-ND/2202389

I imagine it's best to switch both of them - or even better replace all 4 so they're the same on both channels...

I think 63mm might fit if it's not attached to the assembly and I solder some cabling to the board... Might have an impact on air flow though. Either way I need to find a solution

YOu will have to get exactly the same size because the VZ modules are held in place by the capacitor terminals, and the capacitors are clamped at the bottom by a pair of plastic clamps around their base. If they're too thin or thick the clamps wont fit and if they're to short they wont reach the clamp, which is mounted from the side. Without the clamps the main DC busbars are free to touch the metal lid etc which will not end well. There's only about 4mm clearance with the correct capacitors.

Good point….. It’s a very, very long time since I’ve worked on one of these!!

It doesn't look like there's any solution for a direct fit.

I will Macgyver / maybe 3D print something to keep everything in place with whatever replacements I find.

the DC bus bar is also held in place by the output module anyway so it's not really that free to move

oh it's free to move perfectly adequately if the clamps aren't tight.

Sorry, I should have mentioned earlier that I may have a pair of used ones in stock, I’ll check tomorrow if I remember.

Got a reply from Harman, unlike the Canadian distributor who I guess doesn't care to help out, they still have some for $70.98USD ea+shipping ... Let me know if you do and want to sell one and ship to Canada.
