I have some Axys T86 and B89 cabs here.

I see all the B89 are loaded with some PD drivers. Its says on label its made by PD for Duran audio.

I thought the B89 was loaded with Beyma but obvious thiese are loaded with PD special made for Duran audio.

My experience with "custom made" RCF:s, Beymas and so on that they are in fact not everytime are so very custom more like very close to their of the shelf drivers but with other label or serial number.

So can my PD:s in my B89 actually be some PD 184? Im really no expert on the history of drivers.

Here are some pictures. For me they look similair to the Turbosound LS 1803 drivers.

All B89 I ever repaired back in the day, had Beyma standard 18GT200 8 Ohm in them, Axys rebatched and painted blue, same color as the cabinets themselves.
The name B89 comes from introduced in 1989. Before they were called differently and had 4 Ohm RCF in them.
PD drivers were used at some point and almost sure they were PD184.

T86 ( Yep, introduced in 1986 ) should have TAD 2001 on JBL 2370 horn.
Midspeakers were 10" RCF, L10/5.. don't remember the type, but they were of the very efficient kind.
As far as I know the T86 stayed about the same over the years they were produced.

Ok so you know this system please let me ask you some more questions.

My midtops lacking the tad driver is there any cheap replacement that sounds ok?

Is the PD 184 8 Ohm?

Have b89 built in crossover or if I want to use it with other midtops I need a external crossover?

One other thought I have is to rebuild the b89 subs to use as cheap active 18” subs for partys and so on and just put some rcf arts over them as midtops?

How would you rate the b89 nowdays is it ok compared to newer mid class subs like RCF 705 as?

Wasn’t the b89 at some point upgraded which was als available as a diy refurb? I can remember loads of drivers and amps for sale at one point. The sources and such systems where getting a bit out of fashion but the upgrade delivered more power and some extra Hz down below. Might be one of them?

I didnt ask if there is something cheap that sounds like the tad driver.

I meaned to ask if there is something that would sound ok together with the 10” in that cab. ”Ok” for renting to low budget partys and so on.

The closest in respons and sensitivity I replaced the TAD,s with, were B&C DE-24, later DE-25 which is the exact same driver (just diaphragm mounting is different internally). At the moment it’s DE-250, but DE-25 can still be found at several places. Those drivers are about the only 1 on 1 drop-in drivers, without having to dive in the electronics of the T86.
In the early days I used Radian drivers and they sound great, but needed quite a bit electronical alteration to get there.
Some years back I experimented with Beyma CP-380M ( mainly because a client insisted on using Beyma ), but again I needed to attack the electronics a good bit to get somewhat satisfactory on par with the TAD. The advantage of a cheaper driver was largely undone by the time, work and effort to make it sound as close as possible with the TAD.

2426H will make noise, but not anywhere near the TAD.

So you men actually B&C De-250 is an ok drop in?

To bad I have many JBL 2426H and Beyma Cp380m laying around 🙈

There is little info on this system on the web now days thats why I ask here.

Im I right that the whole crossover section is in the midtops? So running the subs alone they have no crossover built in?

B89 has crossover build in, but it goes up to about 300Hz, so not really sub only.
It’s not difficult to change in the electronics to for example 90Hz, but than you can’t combine it anymore with the T86.

DE-250/25/24 are very ok drop ins.
DE-500 too, but there’s no need to use a more beefy driver than DE-250/25/24.

There’s indeed little info on the web. Back in those days everything was on paper only and these systems were not so widespread in use outside Holland and Belgium. I have my info from the original designers/manufacturers with whom I worked close with right after the split to Duran/Axys and Soundprojects/Master Blaster. Lots of paperwork/info got “lost” during that time ( it wasn’t an amicabel split to say the least...). All this is another story for another time maybe, but I’m mentioning it now, because it has to do with all alterations that exist of that Source Set (B89/T86) you have and also a number of other types that existed back than and were in some form or another produced and marketed different by both companies for some time just before, during and after that troubled split.
Depending on manufacturing date of your cabs, you can have products of either company and that means also possibly different electronics. Not entirely different, but things like crossover sits in what cab to name one thing. I kinda forgot about it, because Soundprojects always had all dedicated crossover/processing in each cab and xlr in/out was simple hardwired, but your question jolted my memory back. Full Axys versions had indeed possibilities to couple thing around in a few ways and there was something like one xlr input and two or three xlr outputs. One hardwired in to out, another with low out or something. There was also this thing with symmetrical and electronically buffered asymmetrical outs, that was a pain sometimes to get buzz free. The notorious DO-3 power connectors were also part of that problem by the way. So you might be right that your set has crossover for the B89 in the T86 only and nothing crossover sits in the B89. The 300Hz crosspoint is the only certain thing than ;-).

Hello, I worked for Duran Audio - AXYS in the years 1988 up to 1998 and also in 2009-2011.
The B89 is having an internal crossover section , T86 also. This is all integrated at the inputcard.
Very first Master Blaster set were the Impact (sub) and Supercompact (top) models with RCF L18/851 at sub. Later on, when the name was already changed to AXYS the subs B89 were loaded with 18GT200DA (almost same as standard Beyma 18GT200) Many older subs were modified then from RCF to Beyma, more output and lower frequency. At many cabinets, serviced or updated by Duran Audio, the Master Blaster frontpanels were also changed for an AXYS frontpanel.
Later on they were equiped with 18PD184, again an improvement.
Mids in the T86 model were always RCF L10/581 (special coated) and TAD2001 high driver.
