First post here and that says enough. I’ve been considering for years to build a soundsystem to enjoy my reggae/dub vinyl collection but never did because it seemed a very far away land the pro audio territory. Now after some research and forum browsing I think I can try. 

So Now I need your experience and advice. This set will be placed in my living room which is about 80-90 square meters. It will have to include scoops because I love that sound. Dimensions must be acceptable or my sweetheart will make it disappear soon. Loudness obviously is not important. On the contrary I’d like a set which sounds good also at low level. 4 way. These are the options for The sub section I took into consideration:

1-a single 18” super scoop

2-two 10” scoops based on Jim Frizle’s Yout scoop

3-a single 18” or 15”Mini scoop

I really need someone to advice me on this so that I can figure out the rest of the set.

Pointless putting Scoops in living rooms, real Reggae lovers don't do that.

Also, a scaled down version won't play as deep as a single 18" reflex, which quite frankly, will still be ridiculous in a front room

We get complaints from a single 12" Yamaha active monitor

The other problem is that "PA" gear generally doesn't sound great at low volume, that's why you have high sensitivity Hi-Fi drivers

BUT, if you genuinely want something fun for home, and mid level volume isn't a problem then...

18" reflex sub, 15" reflex kick, 12" + 1.4" + bullets will sound exactly like a mini rig, in a small package

B&C DE25 1" Compression driver, with B&C ME45 1" Alu horn, pure loveliness  for home highs and sizzle.

Especially if mated with Class AB amp on Mid tops.

Peavey GPS3400 is also ultra smooth on Home Sub, 2x15" or 2x18".

I have been storing two hog scoops in a living room and ofcourse tested them.  Yes, there is ALOT of bass pressure right in front of the stack and things are rumbling and flying around the room.. but it just doesn't sound right overall. 

I also have two 12inch scoops but..well, they sound dry and honky and does only 70-150Hz. Very efficient tho. 

Properly designed Reflex or even 6th order bandpass tuned to 30-40Hz will sound better generally speaking in small spaces.  You may try something like Fane 18SB/XB or RCF LF18G401 for a good price/performance. 

 

My current HiFi speakers use B&C DE250s for 1kHz and up. They sound excellent.

I've done some testing, and found that speakers respond linearly even at extremely low levels (as in, I couldn't hear the sweeps happening in-room, but a Beyer MC930 close to the cone picked them up just fine), so it's more likely the electronics that are operating way down in the noise, causing degradation.

If the system is capable of 140dB@1m, you're throwing away a lot of digital bits by running at 70dB@1m.

That's just a contradiction in terms.

A. But depth relates to signal to noise ratio only not to resolution of sampling, and modern digital equipment performs equally well over a wide range of bit depths. 

B. If signal levels are low enough to make this a problem it's easy enough to run all gain stages hot and turn down the amplifiers input attenuators.

reggae sound system has been my life for 20 years+ ... a pair of these for home use, jobs done 

A Gsub or similar, loaded with original PD186, or Fane 18XB600, powered by 1x side of Crest CA18, will give oodles of low smooth sub, starting at 32hz, at low volume.

Just get Klark Tekniks DN360, for tuning/annoying neighbours.
