Dub music grew out of reggae in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Probably the most prolific
pioneer of this mesmerising and thrilling music form is Osbourne Ruddock aka King Tubby.
Respectfully crowned the King of Dub, he was the pioneer of Jamaican sound engineering.
Born 28 January 1941 - 6 February 1989. His ability to create musical sounds and effects by
experimenting on his mixing board using unconventional items and methods made him a
leader, world famous producer and mix-master.
By 1973, several independent innovators, engineers, and producers of instrumental reggae
aka versions, from Jamaican recording studios had begun making ‘Dub’ and special mixes.
Around this time Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, the Acquarious team of Herman Chin Loy and Errol
Thompson saw that Dub was growing in popularity in the UK, Europe and USA and they
began releasing Dub albums. Labels like Coxsone, Penthouse, Jammys, Black Ark became
leaders on the world stage, and their special mixes were sought by Soundsystems.
As digital technology moved into music production, it added another layer to this incredible
spiritual and rooted music. Studios in the UK, Europe and USA began to develop Dub with
vocals by popular bands, artists and singers like Black Uhuru, Aswad, Jesse Royal, Xana
Romeo, Max Romeo, Mighty Diamonds, Nereus Joseph, Keith Hudson, Pablo Gad,
TezFaZion, Sugar Minott, Lorna Asher and many many more.
Currently, dub is enjoying its evolution in roots and culture dancehalls and venues
worldwide. Soundsystems and Record Labels like Jah Shaka, Entebbe, Black Redemption,
Channel One, Aba-Shanti, Iration Steppas and many others, keep ravers, steppers and
roots reggae fans entertained, up to date and on their feet with a consistent display of the
very best productions on the market, and featuring special mixes and productions that are
not yet out on general release. Respect to artists and players of instruments like Vivian
Jones, Danny Red, Johnny Osbourne, Cornel Campbell, Vivian Jackson, Sly & Robbie,
Flabba Holt, Dean Fraser, Lloyd Parks and many many more who amaze us with their lyrical
content, messages of love and redemption and wholesome musical compositions.
Whether you enjoy live dub performances in clubs or music festivals or classic
dub albums by great pioneers and forefathers like Scratch, Pablo, Scientist,
Mad Professor, Dub Judah or Jerry Lionz, Gussie P, Keety Roots or the late
Osbourne “King Tubby” Ruddock, all fans and Dub lovers are in for a real treat
at Dub Specialist Series Luton.
