Hello,

Are Q series cabinets ported or are they sealed?

I've not used them in years and I can't recall seeing ports.

Pretty sure they are ported, at the back corners of the angled Baffle for the 10`s so very easy to overlook if you're not specifically looking for them.

Yes they are ported at the back.

Sounds shitty on any given amp.
But sounds sweet on one of their own amps!

My grandma ass would be tight and firm with that much eq. I was shocked when i saw how those boxes are processed.

And that's what it's all about Big smile

So do you think it sounds good or shitty on any given unprocessed amp?

By the nature of this design an unprocessed signal will be uneven. The angled drive units cause a path length difference between the front and back part of the cone which will cause cancellations at certain frequencies. The chamber in front of the drive unit is basically a short pipe, which will have a resonant frequency.

Based on a 10” drive unit, I would expect a peak in response between 300Hz – 400Hz and interference cancellations start to be come pervasive above 700Hz. I can’t remember seeing a published crossover frequency, processor settings, or a graph of the response, but using electronic processing to obtain a good response is a valid design method, so the above observations are not a criticism of the cabinet. When bought new, I guess that customers buy into the whole d&b ecosystem. But for people buying just the cabinets second hand, the lack of processor settings could trip them up.

For anyone building a similar design, I would suggest fitting a baffle in front of the drive unit, with a slot cut in it, which should extend the upper response slightly. With some thin, cheap ply, it would be easy to experiment with the size, shape and position of the slot to optimise response. Extending the upper response by only 100Hz would increase the options of compression driver choice. It would still need significant eq, but easily doable with a dsp.

It sounds great when hooked up to a D&B amp.

Regarding the "processed or not".
I was referring to that it sounds good when used as it should.
No matter how much processing is involved or the lack of it.

But you can't use anything else than D&Bs own amps to achieve that kind of performance. Anything else is a waste.

Well.......... I am going to chip in here.

Q7 and QSub on a PLM sounds the nuts!

Apologies for misinterpreting your previous comments. This post clarifies it for me, and I agree.

I would expect that, as the power isn't limited to keep the speakers in check all the time, like D&Bs own amps are. They surely have them limited so hard that you can't overdrive them.

Off topic but..
I have been running a pair of 602's off a correctly carded P1200a as booth monitors..

Far_canada they sound so loud, last show they were being turned down as they were drowning out the main stacks 3x118 1xr2 per side

Psycho-acoustics ahoy...

DMZ. "The bass was intense. Girls were literally running up to stand next to the subs"

That Eira of D&B is so good!

I have some C7 and we use it for everything, it sounds so clean.

Have some P1200’s for it which are lovely :) although we do use more modern D&B amps due to weight.
