Hey everyone,

I’m just starting out and really want to learn more about acoustics and the ins and outs of sound system building. I've been around these monsters for a while and been involved with building a couple hog scoops previously, but I have very limited experience on the sound/electrics side.

The plan is to put together a small setup to begin with — probably a couple of horns and a midtop; what they will be is still very unclear to meat this point as I am yet to find out more about different designs. Will be used mainly for electronic, sub heavy stuff (techno, trance, hardhouse, etc). The idea is to hopefully grow over time, maybe link up with people and let it sort of grow organically.

I’d love to build the subs myself. The scoops I've worked on before were done without the help of a mighty CNC machine Dead, but this time it'd be great to have access to one. Any advice on affordable CNC cutting services, or, even better, affordable woodworking workshops in/around Bristol would be grand. Would also love to hear from other people who have built cabs the DIY way!

Any advice on a good starting point for something like this would be great. Also, I’d be proper happy to link up with others in/around Bristol who are into this stuff. Always easier (and way more fun) learning with other people who share the passion.

Thanks! :)

I went the non CNC route and DIY'd it.

The system comprises of:
2 EV SX200 mid tops (12" + horn)
2 Cubo kick (15" Eminence Kappa 15)
2 Cubo 18 (18" P-Audio E18 ELF)

It's only a small system but it impresses me every time I use it. Really quite potent for the size!

All the woodwork was just done at home in the garden with basic power tools. B&Q cut the wood up for me and I only had to do some minor cutting at home (braces, smaller bits, a couple of angles, speaker cutouts etc).

It's definitely doable. Just pick something to suit your skill level and have some fun with it. Everyone always says the early years are the most fun! I read it no end on here and other forums.

If you haven't already, take a trip down to Jon RC1's monthly Bristol Soundcheck at Locco Club

Avon Ply in Keynsham (now Sydnehams) offer a CNC cutting service.
