We've made our cabs with Fane Strudio 12Ls, Turbsound compression drivers, P audio horns and custom built passive X-over (active option as well). It sounds amazing compared to our old piezo style setup and they look great too! The Fanes have 11mm Xmax and 102db sensitivity, which I think is amazing for a 12" driver. And thats from Fanes own datasheet. with two of these in each cabinet, they don't half make some SPL!! 200w RMS each driver. Just saying hello really, I will get pictures of our rig soon. I'm just turning 20 so money is short but it's all coming on so well!! Great forum too! |

Please post a link of Fane's datasheet. As far as mine states, its 5.5 mm The Fane 12L is an old speaker (Around 20 years old) and, they didn't offer 11 mm xmax at that time. If they modified the Xmax to 11 mm, then the sensivity would've dropped as well. In other words, you can't get a 102 dB raw speaker, with a 11 mm Xmax. One has to give. Hi Flip, Usually, when you see a term like "Maximum useable excursion" it's referring to the physical limits of the cone's movement. Xmax on the other hand represents the distance the cone (+coil) can move while maintaining a constant number of turns of wire in the magnetic gap. This represents the region of best linearity in the driver's operation. Depending on the construction of the driver, Xmax can be as little as a third of the max physical limit. Therefore, the 11.2mm figure on the scan is probably not the most reliable figure to use for design purposes. HTH, David. |

The Fane 12L is the UK version of the Electrovoice EVM 12L Following the same principals, as the EV, it was steered for bands. Particulary Lead Guitarist. Thus, the L standing for Lead. Its not a bass speaker, its a Midrange Speaker. That's why the sensitivity, is so high. In order to have such a high sensitvity, the majority of the coil, needs to be sitting in the magnetic gap. If it was 11mm xmax, majority of the coil would be sitting outside the gap, and, have a sensitivity of the Lab 12 (89 dB) Also, Lead guitarist play lead not, bass. So, that speaker wouldn't offer a 11 mm xmax to begin with. Thats more than likely, xmech. Best Regards, ------------- Elliot Thompson |
