A few weeks ago I bought a tiny scoop off Static Age. It's well built being made of 15mm birch ply, with a plywood scoop part. However the driver in it was only 28w rms and seems to be blown. As it's quiet and buzzes a bit when tested, even when I removed the xover inside. When I compaired it to another small sized speaker which was a bookshelf sized hifi sub with a 5.25 inch driver also. So ditched the driver and looking for another suitable 5.25 inch driver. Two drivers come to mind: Beyma 5MP60N rated 50w rms, but has no vented pole piece and is 5 inch, so hopefully the .25 inch more won't make it fall through the cutout hole. Although the Beyma does have a square front frame simular to Fane drivers, so it might fit. They can be got for £25.10 from Proaudioparts. Rubber surround,polyproplene cone, 4mm xmax, vas 9.8 litres, qts 0.29, fs 60hz, BL 6.4, max excursion 20mm, sensitivity at 1w/1m 91db, 1 inch coil, die-cast frame, 50hz-12khz,8 ohms. That one looks pretty decent and seems to have the right ts parametres for scoop use. Or this one that costs £12: Skytronic 902.420 5.25 inch rated 100w rms. With yellow kevlar cone, rubber surround, vented pole piece, 4 layer coil, fs 55hz, qts 0.41, vas 5.6 litres, BL 8.7, spl 84.8db at 1w/1m, xmax 3.5mm, 8 ohms. That one has twice the power handling, vented pole piece and more BL and has a slightly lower fs. But the other specs don't look as good, less SPL at 1w/1m and cheapo make. Unless someone can think of another driver under £30 that might suit it better? Being at least 50w rms. As for the amp to power it, I'm stuck... I got a 150w rms into 4 ohm/100w rms into 8 ohm mono Velleman module amp, which I just need to build the PSU and case for. Hopefully I can build a suitable PSU for it still. Bearing in mind, this will be for a pc 'sub'/ bass bin used for movies and music. So want at get at least 50hz bass. At the moment I got some small 4 inch + 1 inch rear ported reflex, active 30w rms a channel wooden pc speakers. They go pretty loud but lack any bass you can feel much. I'd say they roll off at about 90hz-80hz. Although they say 40hz-20khz on the back and 30w rms on each speaker back. That 40hz is mostly likely marketing lies or some -30db figure.  |

I cant see that a scoop for a 5" driver is going to do anything for the bass end its just too small, any benefit the horn loading might give will be way out of the intended bandwidth for the application, so im guessing youre using it cos it looks cool

Should get to 50hz though.... Or 60hz at least. Will go with the Beyma, hope it being 1/2 inch smaller that it won't fall through the baffle. As old driver was 5.25 inch. Beyma is 5 inch. Cheap as chips at £25 anyway.  |

those skytronics can take a fair amount of abuse, i put one in a tuba
sub and its fine on low power, the cones very flexable though so with
highpower it distorts like crazy. Might be ok in a scoop though
as theres no rear chamber so less pressure on the cone.

I'm presuming you made the Tuba 18 or Auto Tuba and used the 8 inch version of that Skytronic speaker? The 5.25 inch kevlar cone Skytronic must be simular, just a bit less power handling. The Beyma is a quality make however and hopefully won't distort at medium-high ish levels in a scoop. It has no vent and is rated 50w rms though, so might have to go for a 50w rms amp for it, incase it overheats. Unless it's got some kind of vent under the spider or around the voice coil former. 100w rms amp might overheat it... Having a qts of 0.29 is suits a scoop pretty well. And a 4mm xmax and 20mm peak to peak max excursion sounds pretty good. But the fs is 60hz, so I doubt I'll get much out of it below it's fs. Should be fine anyway as my current pc speakers are noticable down to 90-80hz, then very faint which could explain their 40hz-20khz rating on the back. |

201.927 is an 18 inch 500w rms/1000w max sub. Can be beaten for it's price though. Will have to see if that fits as the magnet looks extended and long. Cheers though, looks the best one to go for. 200w rms for a 6 inch is pretty impressive. Can't be too hard to make a cutout for a 5.25 inch driver to a 6 inch driver bigger. Ain't got a router. Carefull handling a jigsaw might work as long it don't split the 15mm ply. Otherwise it's hand work with a metal file and sandpaper. |

| elemental designs make a "compact" version of that driver with a much lower profile for fitting in car doors etc, might be worth checking out. |

Will need to repair it with a few pieces of new 15mm ply on a few sections. The laminates are split pretty badly in some places and has holes in places. Gonna paint it with a few coats black aldcroft when I finished as I still got a tin left of that. |

Discovered mostly all the plywood is split or warped. Can't be arsed to repair whats there. So gonna use the pieces as fully taken apart now as a template to get the plans and to build a few more the same.And will try and build a few bigger ones for an 8 inch or 10 inch using the pieces of wood as a rough guide. |
