hi guys

I need a good smoke or haze machine for use with my new laser lighting rig

I would like something with a timer so i can set it and leave it all night or possibly dmx control, can anyone offer any advice?

i mainly want to use it for big shows, so 600 to 2000 people is my aim

Cheers

I use the Martin Magnum hazer which i'm quite happy with.

Also have a look at the Look Solutions Unique 2 hazer, and the Le Maitre units.

We use a JEM technofog, much better than the crappy cheap foggers and with fairly good output. No DMX but it does have timer/output level controls on the remote.

Edit - just saw 600-2000 people, too small for that methinks.

Smoke Factory Tour Hazers are my current favourite.  Nice haze, good DMX control of fan and haze output.  Obviously not a cheap option as it's a professional unit but Used Lighting have one ex demo for just under £600 at the moment.  Probably worth it if you're going to be using it regularly.  Quite compact and can be tipped while filled with fluid!

Ona budget, I've had a lot of success with one of these:

http://www.thomann.de/gb/stairville_sf1500_nebelmaschine.htm - http://www.thomann.de/gb/stairville_sf1500_nebelmaschine.htm

They do a 3kw version too. Comes with DMX and timer remote and will output continuously on 20% if need be.

I bought an 18" metal fan from ebay for £30 to help the smoke disperse around the venue. Works very well and MUCH cheaper than proper smoke fans.

for versatility and low running costs you are far better with a good quality fog machine and fan rather than a hazer

if you want haze, then run it slowly and spin out the output with a fan

if you want fog, then turn it up!

I use an effects company supersmoke with a 18" blower for my bigger jobs - for a tent of 2500 capacity, then it will be running at 25% continuously for a decent haze, and will get thru 2.5l of fluid per 6 hours ( effects company dense grade)

the secret is having a good quality machine - anything by unique, smoke factory, jem , le maitre and effects company should be fine

Hi,

I use a Martin Magnum 2000 mackhine. Produces a lot of smoke in very little time. If I go to a venue when they don t allow smoke I use My Jem Stage Hazer. Both have variable output and timer. I might be selling my stage Hazer soon - don t get enough use out of it as we usually take out the Martin Magnum.

not sure that will be anywhere big enough for over 1000 people venues, but in reality you will unlikely get anything bigger than that so is all good.

Id have got a hazer personally, its much more functional, more venue friendly, and just generally more pleasant for all involved.

For reference, the internal heating element and pumping mech in my machine which you have seen is scrumped from a magnum 2000, the model twice the size of the ZR22.

well, with a good fan, the 22 will do haze for venues of 2000+ - i know, ive done it!

unless you can afford a proper oil cracker like a df50, then the best way to go is a decent smoke machine which you can run low continuously, and a really good fan

water based haze machines are only small moke machines with fans, and a big price tag

i just want a nice fine covering of thin fog/haze not plumes of white smoke

if i dont find another zr22 i might get a magnum 2k

but i would have to research how reliable they are first

same factory these days - spend your money on a proper blower, not a desk fan,

im covering a 100 by 25m marquee with my trusty effects company supersmoke 1000 running at 25% tonight - and thats a smaller machine than the 22

hi mate the magnum 2k is no better than the zr22 you have, i would say the zr22 was a better machine , reliabilty of the magnums may be an issue, a local hire company had 3 , all are now out of service.

Having said all that, i have a zr22 thats flightcased thats stopped working, it used to work a ok and really blast out the smoke, then got a bit hit and miss and would only heat when it wanted to. Now it doesnt work at all, i was thinking that it needs a new heater block or can they be repaired??

take the lid off and have a good poke around. Its a very simple design inside, quite possibly just a contact filled with sticky glucocrud or something thats gotten a wee bit warm!

to HBL:

ive just found the magnum to be better than the zr22 - used to have one of each in our venue before we upgraded to haze machines. slightly better throw out the machine, and has a slightly larger heat block and element in, so can blat out smoke harder if needed, and the kinetic energy and element can keep up for ages.

i must say you cant beat the zr22's reliability however, better build and higher quality components. Had both the machines said on the workbench after they got decommisioned for a nosey (as i do with all equipment to make the nights pass faster). The magnum eventually fried its circuit board, so the venue decided to just get a nice hazer, and scrap the magnum. I nicked it, and transferred the internals to my crap chinese thing and rewired the circuitry.

seconded on the fan, the crome industrial ones with tilt stands are especially usefull and cheap on ebay. all the touring companies turn up with them. If you want to be posh, you can get a nice little DMX switchpack and remotely switch it, or depending on the motor type use a dimming pack and control it (unlikely as most will have small DC motors).

ZR22 was pretty much standard on all big west end musicals back in the 90s (I lost count of the ones I used as a stage LX on many shows). So a very decent machine, and Martin brought out Jem back then as well. Jem also used to do a Water-Cracker Haze machine, bloody loud bugger LOL, so never took of in a big way (also think the DF50 came out soon after).

It's all about the music & the vibe, so enjoy it while you can.

The tour hazer in the flightcase is a look unique mk1, the look mk 2 is a brilliant machine

Obviously you're sorted now, but i would have said anyway the best method is a decent controllable fogger & a fan, that's all non oil based machines are anyway

ps use the proper martin fluid!
