Somewhere I will search the archives. They were so hidden under the balcony and a few tms'4's that they never revealed themselves that well in photographs.

Yeah he's on good form, given up the evil nicotine but still on a thousand gold blends a day. Busy rewiring the fridge, which as just changed hands again, bye bye Craig Elder and welcome back Andrew Czechbounski so watch out Brixton...... Hopefully I can give Cliffe back the 320 parcans I have been storing for the last four years.
Talking to Noosh about these drivers yesterday he thinks one can find the patents online.. (go on deadbeat).. nb: He sends his regards.. /tx F

When were they in use at the Fridge? I was there a lot from the late '80s to the early '90s. Don't remember stupidly loud bass but I did like the sound in there.

haha, funny old world! I supplied these speakers to the fridge in 1992. I bought them off a tech who used to work for Mitsubishi UK, and he had them under a tarp in his dad's garden for a number of years. Since they were designed for exterior use, the cabs and cones were OK.
As far as i know there was only one pair of these cabs brought over to the UK to demo to anyone interested, but they never sold any.
I was really excited about getting my hands on them, but they turned out to be a major disappointment. The cones were just too heavy to have any transient response useful for music, so they just rumbled away merrily in the background. Since the fridge wre mosly vinyl based, then those extra low frequencies would have been filtered out anyhow.
At the fridge they were used more for visual impact than anything else. When i installed them they were mounted in a balcony area where they would dwarf the dancers who would be performing in front.
I was told that there were some even larger 80in cones around that were demoed to the MOD, but that was never confirmed independently.
Cheers

I used to go to the Soul II Soul nights - can't remember too well but I think the sound was pretty good by the standard of venues of the time. Perhaps they used more than just the house PA?
Bassline used to be quite heavy - especially when they used to play that Courtney Pine dubplate - memories...

The Mitsubishi drivers were manufactured by http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diatone - Diatone , which was their OEM speaker manufacturing company.
The speaker in question is the Diatone D-80, refering to its 80cm diameter.

It was also available in a http://audio-database.com/MITSUBISHI-DIATONE/diatonesp/d-80m-e.html - domestic enclosure

| System |
1 way, 1 speaker bass-reflex system, and a

| Use unit |
For low-pass: 80cm corn type
|
| Rated impedance |
4ohms |
| Play frequency band |
15Hz - 500Hz |
| Antiresonance frequency |

| Output sound pressure level |
100dB/W/m |

Some enterprising chap actually managed to acquire 6 of these drivers for his home hifi system. It seems strange to use 15" JBL's as "mids".

However, everything in the post above is all rather nice. But what is
really important is the knowledge gained from building these drivers was
put to use to build the "holy of holies" in bass drivers.
Enter this bad boy, the Diatone D-160
So called due to its 160cm (63") diameter.

| System |
1 way, 1 speaker bass-reflex system, and a
floor type |
| Use unit |
For low-pitched sound: 160cm honeycomb corn
type (PW-1600) |
| Low-pass play limit |
8Hz |
| The maximum input |
3000W |
Woofer size isn't the status symbol it used to be, but if you still want
the biggest woofer on your block, Mitsubishi is ready to oblige. Their
Japanese product line now includes the Model D-160 superwoofer with a
160-cm (63-inch) cone for about $ 150000. The D-160, naturally, goes
down to a rated 8 Hz and handles 1250 W continuous,
3 kilowatts maximum. The 3300 pound D-160 measures 7.8 x 7.6 x 4.5
feet.
One of these (in working condition) recently sold on Craigslist for $550. Buyer collects.

These look like they would work quite well as part of a digital church organ system. I was looking up Youtube videos last night of organists demonstrating their lowest stops, there are some digital organs that have 128' voices in which the lowest note is 4hz. From what I could hear their attempts at reproducing this consist of multiple 18" woofers in very large sealed enclosures which are made to hit their backstops 4 times a second I think it might sound better on that D-160 beastie...

At the risk of going slightly off topic.
Some chaps have recently build this 60" driver

The cone moves 6 inches peak to peak under full-tilt output.
The actual cone diameter is 54 inches, with the 3 inch wide surround
on the outside of that. The radiating surface area is 2,290 square
inches. That yields a one way displacement of 6,871 cubic inches. That
is equivalent to the displacement of 161 ten inch woofers that move 1.5
inches peak to peak.
The motor is capable of producing 6,000+ pounds of linear force,
which is necessary when considering the very large surface area and
displacement volume required to produce high SPL levels.
The woofer was designed with the capability to produce SPL levels of 188 dB.

Looks to me like a new driver for TonyASS's new scoops - possibly someone commented when they auditioned them that they weren't 'heavy enough', but I think Tony may have misunderstood!

Guys, I have a rare opportunity to take a full tour around the old Brixton Fridge building next week, anything anybody particularly wants to know while I'm there? - my colleagues know I will be wanting to poke about everywhere, so I won't disappoint!

I've
registered specially to reply on this topic! Awesome speakers, especially the
MTX one. Is there any more info available? I've checked the internet, but info
is hard to find.
About the weight, let’s
make some assumptions: - Density magnet =
density metal = 7850 kg/m3 - 1,5 meter acros,
0,4 meter thick
Surface area =
pi*R^2 = 3,14*0.75^2 = 1.767 m2 Volume = 1.767 *
0.4 = 0.71 m3
Volume
* density = weight 0.71 m3
* 7850 kg/m3 = 5573 kg
So only the magnet
weighs in at 5.5 metric Ton! Definitely fake
