Hi all.
I've finally decided to post up on your fine forum after reading lots here. I'm planning to build a medium small pa for my Audio/visual setup.

For Dub. Roots, Jungle, and Dubstep.

2x Hog Scoops P.audio loaded.
plus
2x X12

Now my first reservation is... Will the X12s be able to play low enough to meet the hogs?

Secondly... Where can you find the selenium (hl 14-50) horns from ? Uk.....

Cheers for any help. Tom

You can redesign the X12's (the cab design isn't critical as long as it's tuned correctly) to make sure they'll go low enough.  And if you can't find the Selenium horn, use a different one!

You could pick a 12" driver with a bit more low end capability rather than the SN12MB but it really depends where you want to cross over.

I'm not sure how high Hogs will play before they honk...

I wanted to avoid any prototyping by going for a stable design with the x12s. All I was planning to do was put the Compression driver between the 12s on each cab. I'm reluctant to swap for a different horn for the Compression driver . Think If I can't get the right shizzle I'll go for an X15... or does anyone know how much the DR200s cost to build in the uk?

I should imagine the Hogs will be fine up to around 100Hz, I'm sure someone will reply with some more info on that.  If you aim for the X12's to work with a crossover point of 80Hz, you'll definitely be safe.  That means you should be tuning the cab to around 60Hz.

The X12 (and tbh most of the other designs on the site) as-is isn't a particularly refined design so it's probably worth taking some time to customise it.  I think they are optimised for simplicity for people new to cabinet building.  Being a simple reflex design you should be able to go straight into it without a prototype.

Some forum users are probably getting bored of my posting this pic but as you're new, you might find it useful.  These are my X12-type cabs which I've been gigging for the last year or so with very good results.

I used a much larger flare than the Selenium because you get better pattern control.  Why would you not want to use a different horn, there are plenty of good options?

I don't want to get my hands too messy with re-designs. Just want something that has been tried and tested. Like the look of your cabs tho.

I've been told that the designs on speakerplans site are better than what I'm likely to come up with as a first mid-top design. I was initially thinking of trying the mt121 as I'd like to have the system as efficient as possible.

This is my only previous experience of speaker design. A 12v system. I had to fill the hole with sand! Not part of the new rig.... still sounding fat tho.

Tbh, if you can handle designing and building something like that, a simple mid-top shouldn't be too much trouble.  Don't forget there are plenty of people on here that can and will check any designs for post.

I think the first thing you need to do is decide which drivers you want to use then the cab just fits round them!

I'm not saying you shouldn't build the X12 as-is, it's just that having been through the process myself I know that with a little bit of thought you could get something that's optimised for your system.  And also using parts you can get easily.

The thing is that took me about a year. I only sort-of worked it all out. Had lots of help with the maths Martin From http://www.purpleproaudio.com/ - Purple Pro audio. and from My brother Who runs http://myspace.com/highpressuresoundsystem - High Pressure ,
I don't have the time to re-design anything as we are planning take the system away to France for the winter. What do you mean by

"Don't forget there are plenty of people on here that can and will check any designs for post."

Oops sorry, that should have read:

"Don't forget there are plenty of people on here that can and will check any designs you post!"

Meaning there is plenty of help available.

Maybe I spend too much time thinking about how to improve things!

The zion train dj's sound system, Abassi, all star use a similar setup.
check this out http:////www.wobblyweb.com/ue/abassiequipmentlist.html - http:////www.wobblyweb.com/ue/abassiequipmentlist.html

but in my opinion...there's a lack in the kick section. my 2 cent

yEAH. Well the lack in the Kick will be the frequencies which are too high for scoops and too low for twelves. YeH?

Think I might go for X15's instead. they seem to be a pretty safe bet. It would also mean I could cross the scoops over nice and low.

Hey mate, alex here. the scoop x15 is quite a good combo... give smee a call for his thoughts as he's run this setup for small partys quite a few times

for a no fuss set up x15 and hog would be good but youll be needing the 15" rather than a 12" crossed over low to get the most from the hog you wont reap the benefits of nice upper mid from the 12, just end up running it a bit too hard (ie to distortion or worse trying to keep up on kick unless you use 2, but then your increasing the cost and im assuming you want to keep it cheap and portable)

You're a big man, but you're in bad shape. With me it's a full time job. Now behave yourself.
