Good work - finished designs are hard work and always appreciated.

wafflesomd - ?
It is a ported horn. But designs do differ a lot. This is the first diy plan I've seen that has used this particular form factor. Do remember to take in the y axis scale on the LEAP graph.

panoramix - do you have a link to any more info of this Mr Startec and his designs?

this guy work since long time and try to offer plan he allready test before ,not only by programm like so many plan on the web.

i will but his 2 new design ,another bass horn and a 3 way speaker (full horn ,with phase plug and work in tri amp/bi amp).

No need to be so afrontive about it - just wondering exactly where this great stuff comes from, that's all.

Glad to hear that dj panoramix, you must be close to him coz he share his great works to you, it takes a lot of hard work to come up with these great designs and give it for free. I saw his other design also, the SUPERbass Horn. that was a superb design, very well done.

thank you for sharing the plan again, for sure we all be happy for the holidays to come! so excited to build some for the holidays....keep up the great work!Clap

I was hoping these would be a nice cabinet to use over the 186, but not for me.

186 doesn't go as low, but there's no way I could move four of those ported horns by myself every gig.

actually this is a very close contender to martin's WLX as far as this thread is concerned:

and it's size is 90% - 95% near to this:

looks great!

My only query is, the rear of the driver is facing straight towards the port exit

didn't read through it all, but has anyone bulit this?

if you're going to build this, I would suggest maybe putting a piece of wood in marked red?

This has a similar design, or maybe a revision on this. the thread below, maybe you could give us some idea as to the effect of the additional piece of wood. maybe slower down the velocity of the moving air?

Yes, it would be nice if the air saw the rest of the chamber before it leftLOL, I've always used the idea that if the cone can't directly see the exit of the port in a design like this, the better it is

not to bad if its port tubes, say directly behind a driver, but not a labrynth port like this

I put a reflective panel in the XXL around the port area for this reason

so then, how low would say four of these get?

it looks realy similar to the design amano posted recently too,

Im interested as these seem to be a possible candidate for a relatively cheap sub to go under some slightly unusual hd15's [ie 300w neo drivers, slightly less overall output, a fair bit lighter cheaper and more efficient]

could a design like this do say 30<70hz at moderate power levels?

Mykey, thinking about moving the port to a lower position, but still its a rectangular port with the same dimension.. would this make a difference compare to the original design??

I do feel a bit strange messing with the internal layout of someone elses design

I personaly would do it like this
I'm thinking the designer may have put the port on the lid, to gain some extra port length using the lid it's self?Ermm

so i asked him ,here is this answer:
Quote
I see that the port was moved, as it was originally
but by working on the port, I optimized the flow of airflow in the enclosure to the tunnel at an angle of 90 degrees between the door and the brace of 8cm at the beginning of port. The airflow is normally more consistent like this:

Hi

Firstly haven't build any of them.

The last picture (green and black painting) pertains to Fabrício, the guy who build some planar horns in past if I remember correctly and post something here too in past about  planar.
His post beside that picture is:

"Voila les miens
testés ca le weekend dernier en extérieur avec 3 382Pk au dessus
ben honetement tres surpris du rendement
c clair ,propre, rond,dinamique
jadore
Deux sufisent largement
le troisieme etais mise la parceque on savais pas trop ou la metre
puis comme tu la vue
ca reste dans la continuitée des motifs des autre
donc voila function autoresize(im) {if (im.width>600) {im.width=600;}}
Moi jai deux HR-118 amplifié par un HPA A5000
mes deux tete 382P par HPA A2800
lautre 382P par un inter-M 500
voila le tout driver par un DCX 2496
caisson 32 A 115hz
tete couper a 80Hz
ca tourne nikel

les tetes jai prise les mesure sur le site B.corde des version 2
jai fait les plans moi meme
calculer suivant le mem litrage et meme volume interieur
voila function autoresize(im) {if (im.width>600) {im.width=600;}} "

Report also to Ceharden comments at performance of his 15" ported horns.

In past I've used 12 Whorns(18"), like Keele ones, which I modified adjusting throat and Vb to loudspeaker T/S at hand, and changed position of front ducts (closed front openings), and put them firing directly inside the short horn near the throat (this I do inspired in Mr BF articles in Speaker building magazine). Made so gives a good boost in the response, just where in past it need a eq without any Watt more... Think what a reward: more lows for the same. Other PA owners remain trying to discover what I've done to obtain that response up to date.
All I have to say is that using six WH a side there was no need of eq to have near flat from 40 Hz up... Low cut at 40 Hz helped us to avoid problem with the Gyms roof to play (delayed) with the PA.
At that time I always used Behringer DSP8000 RTA and mic ECM8000 to align the PA to the place... It functions well for me.

Regards,

Probably just as low as 1 goes. because the port dictates the low cut off.
If you put the ports next to each other then the tuning would be lowered slightly, But not too much.

Also i dont see why the horn mouth wasnt designed bigger, it looks like it could have easily been done.... otherwise its pretty good.

@mykey, why wouldnt you want the back of the driver to 'see' the port?

I think mykey's going on the idea that he wants the entire air mass in the rear chamber to be treated as the air mass acting on the port. A direct path from the back of the driver to the port might mess up this relationship, meaning the models and reality would differ. The lpf effect of the rear chamber could also be compromised by a direct path to the port.

Just guessing though!

I think it's just a feeling...to verify this, we need an FEA analysis or even data taken from sensors in a rear chamber.

The mass and spring made of air is a relationship that I've found you positively have to work at to screw up...

I think that because the rear of the cone is cone shaped (obviouslyLOL) it wont 'make' the air fly backwards towards the port, it just creates a positive pressure over all the rear chamber. In my opinion...

If you look through my port Wink (on my ported horns) you can see a bit of the magnet, but none of the cone, so i doubt the cone can 'see' the outside.

Thats just my guess tho, i agree with deadbeat too, that it would need some sort of test to prove or disprove, this is probably tests that noone can be bothered to do, or doesnt have the equipment to test (I certainly cant!)

HI
This project looks great for me, but my speaker is 18sound 18W1000 anybody can help me how to suit this speaker in this cabinet? can I please a plan modifications make it suitable for my speaker?

a litle bit higher tuning frequency in bass reflex will be optimal, or what?

This plan mod is right for
18sound 18W1000 ?

Thanks for any help

How did you come up with that mode?

18W1000 is a great driver and i am sure will play very well without any modification to the box. It is a driver made especially for horn loading.

you can't just stick a driver in a hybrid and expect it to work marjanM

that box has been designed around a certain driver, just because a driver has hornloaded spec's doesn't mean it will work in a hybrid

Driver equivalency check:

(Qts^2)*Vas should be within ±10% or better.

(Fs/Qts)*.312 should be within ±10% or better.

That will take about two minutes, then you can do a Hornresp design if you want a crosscheck.

I'd have done a reflex box in winisd (or Hornresp) with the same port size and rear chamber as that design, and see how different the tuning frequency is for each driver, if they're close then it'll work just the same, if its out then do a slight mod on the port shelf length.

(although what you said DJK looks alot quicker. I havent come accross that before, cheers.)

I am not talking about any driver.

I have spent enough time with 18W1000 and 18N401 to be sure that they are very similar and will work equal in the given box.

If we are talking about 0,5db deference at some frequency, than we are splitting hairs here.

Hi all. Don't you think that this construction is the most multi-purpose cab of all? If not, why? This is hybrid, so you can use it indoor, outdoor, anyway. In small venues and big parties. And it has impressive sound pressure, especially when used 4 :) I need professionals to undestand where am i wrong)

First...
I would like to thank Dennis and his wife Jonalyn for being so accomodating during my visit in thier place. I have a great stay there and enjoyed the food so much....Thumbs UpSmile

About Dens bass stacks...
Startec loaded with T&T AK18DSW....

WOW!!! Around 10 meters in front of the stack, pressure was too much! Hair raising bass, as fast as horn but with low end and sound fidelity of a reflex. It was a brutal experience facing the stacks.  The bass is well rounded even at only 2 cabs for these startec. More cabs add more SPL.

Hoping to do more business with you densWink....till my next visit....Smile

is the H/R118 loaded with rcf driver by Startec better dan the 1850 horn loaded with void 18 v1000.

better for what?

Posted By: pietjepuk
Date Posted: 18 May 2009 at 12:17pm
for a alround system, indoor ,outdoor, big, small.

mainly for house, dance, hardtek, tek

are there some other plots from some one else

Posted By: Teunos

The plots will be the same, if you are pointing to the sims on the HR118 posted on here vs. your own.
(now going back to your earlier question) But 1850 is pure horn loaded only. While HR118 is a hybrid, meaning that the low end response comes from the port mainly. This will affect the ''throw'' (dus hoe ver het geluid draagt, ik neem aan dat je nederlands bent)>( So how far sound carries, assuming you are dutch) but also the sound of the horn. A horn will give you a much more thumpy, detailled bass response which is very distinqtive(not properly spelled or is it?LOL). So you will have to specify your music range very well, because horn loaded doesn't work for every type of music. (However this is only my vision)

Best regards,
Teun.
