Make sure you have the correct ports forwarded from the router to your pc for the apps you want to run. There's a sheadload of guides for this on the net.

If you have an old linksys router, WRT54G, you need something different. Those boxes can only handle a limited amount of connections in it's state table (on the order of a thousand, and once you open one, it's open for at least 60 minutes, sometimes wither or not the connection gets closed or not. Bittorrent opens and closes hundreds of connections, constantly, so you can see how the little router will simply clog up after a few minutes of use, before the torrent has any time to gain any speed.)
The hardware in those little boxes is simply too limp-wristed to handle the mass of TCP connections that bittorrent throws at it.
You can flash custom firmware on it (DD-WRT, Tomato, etc) and raise the connection limit according to how much memory the device has, but in most cases you can't because they neutered it with 8mb of ram... And it's sort of an involved process that can turn your router into a brick if you do it wrong.

Also don't forget XP has a limit of 10 concurrent TCP/IP connections.

Al patches and registry edits at your own risk. Risk of drowning and sexual disease if not handled properly. Linux uses do not need to apply this patch as they have big beards. Blah!

Sticking Tomato on my WRT54G took about twenty minutes, was dead easy and I've never had any issues with heavy usage once I setup decent L7 QoS. Thing is, almost all 'consumer grade' routers are incredibly light on memory and it's not uncommon to get a max of 4MB spare after loading the OS on most routers on the shelves today.

The TCP limitation on XP is not what people think, and any results from increasing it are just a placebo effect. It will not really impact torrent usage, let alone normal browsing and emails.

sKs: On the Belkins you have to 'save all' or whatever they call it on the settings, then restart the router. I think it's under a 'tools' page somewhere in the interface. If you don't do this it won't apply the settings and will lose them on a reboot of the router.

I'd recommend µTorrent over Azureus as well.

Quote Whatcha all think of Windows Vista?

I just bought a new Acer base unit with Vista Home Premium pre-intalled which I intended to remove and install XP Pro.  However, Acer use a system where the boot disk data is held on a hidden partition on the HD and to cut a long story short, spent 4 days mucking about, only to just about end up back with Vista again - so i thought I'd try it....    next is probably a dual boot but for some reason the HD really doesn't like you messing with the 2 existing partitions in any way, which is a shame coz there's so much wasted space on the Vista one.

Its not so bad, apart from I have a home network with all the other machines on XP and getting the 2 to talk effectively to each other IS A F**KIN NIGHTMARE!!!!!!!!!!  I still have problems with folder permissions due to either owner, creator or some other pissy violation that XP just handled.  It's handling of basic error/system messages is also fairly hilarious.

Soon, I'll upgrade my CPU, and double my 2gb DDR2 mem, and get a separate Windows HD, so I can run Vista at the same speed I run XP now, without an upgrade.Wink

That'll be because they took it upon themselves to assume you'd be using it on an Active Directory network. It makes it near impossible to use any non-Windows secured Samba shares because it prepends your domain onto your typed in username without warning, breaking authentication Angry

Had the same issues with My Acer laptop when I first attempted a clean install of XP (it came with Vista) without a full re-formating. I had that 4 gig section of the Hdd with all the hidden backup for Vista just sitting there, and another portion of the hard drive apparently dissapeared.

I then completely re-formatted the whole shebang and freed up all the lost space and had it running like a dream. The only issue I then experienced was that ATI dont do XP drivers for my GPU, so I had to re-format the computer again, Install an OEM copy of Vista Ultimate, then partition my HDD and install XP SP3 on the second partition.

The system runs like a dream - 13 sec boot up in XP, 25 Sec in Vista - and neither system can see the others HDD.

Vista to XP Networking:
First you need -KB922120-v5-x86-ENU.exe
Next realise that Vista Basic or Premium (in other words HOME) will always require you to log in when connecting from the XP machine. This is only per session.
Things to watch: Make sure the XP machines have a password on the user that you want to connect to the Vista box and likewise the Vista box. Turn on the guest account on XP machine (this as also the secret to XP home to XP pro networking). Make sure the XP machine users haven't  made their files private. Vista defaults to WORKGROUP not MSHOME.
If you have ANYTHING Norton or McAffee remove the firewall part (good luck). If you really want a full securtity package use NOD32.
 Here's how to do it.
Password both XP and Vista users.
Run network setup wizard on XP machines and choose WORKGROUP or whatever you want. Re-boot
Go to My Network Places on the XP PC and find the shared Vista files. Upon opening you should be prompted for the Vista password.
Go to Vista network and discovey bollox and let it hunt for the the Workgroup.
When it finds your shared files on the other (XP) PC's try to open them, it should let you.. Vista Business doesn't do this everytime (i think)
If you want XP and you cannot build your own PC go to Dell, dell.co.uk/offers hunt down a PC with Vista BUSINESS, then you will be able to choose XP downgrade which they will install for you, AND give you both XP and Vista media. I did four last week for £400 delivered with THREE years onsite. (each)
Also a little, naughty tip. ANY Dell will allow you to install DELL branded XP without activation or serial no. The BIOS is tattooed and will allow. Has to be a Dell XP disk. Mine have SP3, IE7 and MP11 slipstreamed. Any updates will be cool.
Happy New Year

PS, Vista is another Millenium  O/S. It will be gone in a year or so.

More DRM, id have to double my PC specs to make it go properly. No thanks. People will end up with it or windows 7 simply because games are made for it.

I think its causing some people to move to macs and ubuntu.

BTW "pirates of silicon valley" funny old look at Gates, jobs and co in the 80s.

Some cheap 'free' routers you get from the ISPs are rubbish. Dont rule out your ISP throttling P2P. I had one that needed resetting a few times a day.

Or that 'unlimited' plan actually has a limit of x gB. I found out the hard way that after 2gB in 24hrs, that you get 24hrs of 64k speed."its in the conditions" apparently. I couldnt see it.

Ha ha nah, It's 2.2ghz Core 2 duo + 3gig of ram on XP SP3 with pretty much every non critical process dissabled. The only thing it has on that HDD partition is the OS, Traktor 3, external soundcard & midi drivers and a couple of GB's of music.

13 secs is timed from the OS selection screen.

Heh. A fresh windows install is always faster also. Its as if it eats itself to live. I run ancient free hardware, like my current athlon64. I heard they made an EEE laptop boot in 6seconds with linux.

Quote The press event to launch the 50Mbit/s package yesterday was held in a grand building overlooking Buckingham Palace gardens. Berkett volunteered that the Queen is a Virgin Media customer.

So what's the Sovereign's position on net neutrality? We think we should be told. Let us know in comments, Liz.

LOL so the Queen's turning a blind eye to data protection crimes cos she's getting cheap rate porn channels? Dark.

p.s. if anyone's having difficulty with installing windows - the last two times i've tried to setup a dual boot system windows has failed miserably and corrupted boot partitions etc. etc.

now i use ubuntu to wipe the drive, then install windows, then install ubuntu on the second partition.

so ubuntu have managed to create a free product which allows me to install windows better than the windows install CD. mmmmmm......

The funny thing is,Apple is LESS open because you have to use their hardware. Yes,it means it works properly though. Have you ever owned a windows machine that doesnt pause for 20seconds when you insert a DVD? Ive had several and they always do it lol.

Its windows7,you can download the torrent now of the beta. Had a few thousand seeders last time I looked :-)

The law of diminishing returns. Huge leaps since 1950s in computing from punch card to DVDs. Now we have a nice GUI and things work, what more can they do.

I dualboot with Xubuntu and xp. $711 for office 2007 license?

Ive installed ubuntu a few times, opensuse and Mandriva - from memory all worked well if XP was already existing. You can easily change the bootloader too - I had no idea how easy - just edit a text file lolol!LOL
