Designing a LAB top box at the mo. trying to fit a 72cm HD15 style kick horn into a trap box with the porn horns. Will post elsewhere info on this..

Just wondering what people think of the HF. The Sn740's are pretty pricey, is it worth it? do they go up high enough on their own or are they a little harsh like most large drivers?

I'd investigate the Winner 1.4" driver. P.Audio hasn't released much info on those but they might be worth a look. Personally I'd not go with the Porn HF section if I'd have to use the Porn horns more than one a side ever as it has vastly differnt polar response from the Mid section around the intended x-over of 2kHz.

alright dave! how was bulgaria? think i last saw you at that party in pilzen... loved the little acided out, wonky bristol corner 8)

i use the bmd740s in my HF, theyre nice, but dont sound great over about 13kHz-ish. the sn-740s (i put these in itsy's tops) are a quite audible improvement, they sound good right up to 15k, and certainly will play higher.

both the compression drivers are quite 'full-on' compared to the delicate little 1"s you get in all the latest 3-way touring tops, but porn horn mids are not exactly subtle either.

IMO bullet tweeters are a waste of time, im yet to hear a unit that sounds truly musical like a top notch comp can - im sure there's alot out there i dont know about though.

we have noticed a few issues with clarity and eq around x-over point. probably the dispersion matching issues martin mentioned. if you can be bothered, a different horn for the top would be an improvement, think you'll have to stick with 1.5" throat though.

dont get me wrong, i love the porn horns, especially itsy's. theyre accurate, clean, shockingly loud, and with a little eq'ing, very nicely balanced....

but they're Brutal. :D

yes mate, back in bristol. When u getting here?

Working at Bestival last weekend, a lot of nice sounding community rigs there.

I thought the HF horns were supposed to be matched to the mids in dispersion? What sort of horn would i be looking for then?

Yea, really want to hear some before i take the plunge, the 15" trap kick is pretty much designed, but i'm torn between going for Turbo 10"/1" tops instead. Looking for fidelity and clarity really.

well the issue is really going to be how high you can push the 15 vs how low the mid'll take you. porn horns can play right down to 120 at a push, comfortable at 140, whereas i imagine the turbos wont go much below 180-200.

i dont know much bout this mismatch in dispersion, seems like a discovery thats been made while i was off travelling. i think the 2 horns are overall pretty similar in beamwidth, but at the crossover point there is some significant difference. martin... please point me in the direction of some plots/polar diagrams etc if you see this.

ill be in bristol on the 1st mate. system probably wont make it down for another week or two after that though, need to settle in a bit.

Interesting stuff. Has anyone reccomended a better 1.5" horn to match the porn horns yet tho?

Loophole - whats the depth of the porn horn cab, its 720mm right?

Limmer have some nice ones, but be prepared to dosh out the $$$. For a narrow dispersion horn/waveguide you could also use a 2" exit widening your choice.

Cheers

Do you have any links to the kinda thing to look for?

If presented with more detailed measurments of a Porn horn MID, one could figure out a suitable cross, but for a single 1.2kHz on a large waveguide/horn sounds like about the ticket, though it is difficult to say for real. How many are you building?

4, so its gonna be two a side

I was gonna cross over at 2khz because i think comps sound too harsh any lower. The mid will be crossed around 180hz.

I don't understand why they didn't take these dispersion differences into consideration when they designed the porn horns?!

Look for a laaarge 45-55 degree horizontal dispersion horn to suit in that case. 3" diaphragm compression drivers (with a couple of exceptions) will quite likely be up to the task and many would allow you to cross a fair bit lower than 2kHz (check up where the dispersion matches reasonably, though it would be very narrow if you want the cabs to array somwhow acceptably in a "nomal" configuration.
