Subject: Xtro build-Finished-For Sale£1200
Date Posted: 11 April 2009 at 11:56pm
SUMMARY:

Whilst it took many hours to complete, the xtros were fun to build
They are loaded with B&C -
  15" = 15NW76
   8"  = 8PE21
   Compression = DE500 On TD245 Horn.

Having completed the build and using them, the itch to build something new is kicking in. I can not afford to keep them and buy the drivers for the new project, so these will have to go first.
Full build pictures are in the following thread.

They are listed in the For Sale section at £1200 ovno including VAT.

Price dropped to £1200 - Contact via pm's please.
Cheers
Matt.

Starts early Sunday. I will take photos.

Based around Mykeys XT8's.

Looking forward to getting them built, painted and tested.

UPDATE

I made the mistake of spending too much time at work, and not enough on sound stuff to have them set up before arrival at the amp meet.

Have since had a little time to play with them, and I am happy. It goes without saying that the cabs could be demoed, using the same settings as Saul etc. You will not be dissapointed. The settings used on a 2496 will be supplied with the cabs.

My saw finger is getting itchy and wants to start building again. I simply need these cabs to find a new home so that I may have the pleasure of building something else.

Cheers
Matt

Hi mate, I have received the 8pe21 from you, arrived in great condition, thankyou.
I have checked through my pm's and have received no messages regarding 18 sounds.

I already had all the drivers for the xtro's when I asked you if I could purchase your 8pe21, which I wanted as a spare.

Im sorry if there has been a misunderstanding.

Cheers
Matt.

Thankyou.

"I would suggest getting some eye protection."
We were doing about half the routing each. That's my Dad. I think this is the only time he did not wear goggles and I managed to catch it on camera.

"Hearing protection helps me out a lot in the shop as well."
Soundwise with fresh cutters and quiet router did not seem loud at all. I do hope this does not mean my hearing is already kn@ckered. Confused There are cheap, non induction routers in his collection that really scream, I do find them too loud for comfort and avoid their use or try and get out of the garage. Will take ear plugs with me next time and give them a try.

Day 2 of build

Wanted a hole in the brace, but did not have a large enough bit, so used the lathe instead.
By listening to the change in sound it is possible to stop the cut before breaking through. Smile

Leaving a nice hole ready to be rounded over

Smaller parts assembled on bench

Forming inside of angled handle, just thought it would look neater than square and could not think that it would damage the sound

After seeing CSG's neat way of mounting speakers thought that I would give it a go.

Will put more information up as soon as I get a chance.

VERY impressive build pic quality, i like the neat & tidy workshop says alot about the builder for a start. Love the lathe cutout method old school style. I'm sure those cabs would lok and sound awesome be creative don't just cover them with black paint it will hide all the quality workmanship

I am fortunate to have a Dad that still enjoys woodwork after spending years as a builder / joiner.
Each time I work with him I learn something Smile

He has build up the tools over many years. I am confident with most of them, just dont have the years experience that he has got.

Looks very nice indeed. I see you use the same position and shape of the handles we used in our MKII prototypes.

Which 15" and 1" are you going to use? I assume you use B&C 8" PE21 for Mykey XT8 horn?

Best regards,

Thanks for the design Walt, looking forward to hearing them running.

Drivers as follows:
1" = B&C DE500 on TD245 horn
8" = B&C PE21 + Mykeys horn
15" = B&C 15NW76

Hopefully get more time to build this Sunday.

Thanks for the compliments to everyone else that has posted.

has that table saw of yours got running gear on it? good to see youve cut the holes in the baffle before building the cab - the insomnia ones have skewed holes for the driver to sit on and i dont see it happening! LOL

running gear, you mean like Nike or Addidas ?

One small table, but no good for a 8 foot sheet at which point I become the sliding table extension Smile

Was really useful to have an accurate fence to work with for making repeat cuts and ripping ply for internals to 485mm.

yeah thats what i meant - i wondered whether it was a two man job. As we probably discussed the other day, im using a festool plunge saw. i think both method are ultra accurate.Big smile. Good luck with the rest of the build. Seems like your dad is teaching you some good stuff!!!

I would have liked to use festool if I was working by myself. I used a makita in the storeroom at work when building the 1850's by myself. Just seemed a lot easier than man-handling 18mm birch ply over a table saw.

More work on the xtro's this Sunday Big smile

Thanks Mykey, will pass the compliment on.
Anywhere he has worked has always looked like that, be it a workshop or a building site be has been working on. I seem to have spent most of my childhood carrying bricks and blocks or standing behind a broom Big smile

Does make it a pleasure to work in though.

Riddimkid.
I have sold two of my B&C 18 reflex to a friend.
I still have two, and access to borrow their two for events inside small rooms etc.
I will save the six 1850's for larger spaces.
Hope yours enjoying your amps mate.

I know I said I'd post a pic but I thought I'd try and explain the gist of it as I'm not back at work 'till next week.

The issue I have discovered is that due to the 15NW76 having a larger overall mounting diameter the edge of the upper driver will foul on the horizontal panel at the bottom of the top baffle. I initially tried moving this panel down so it connects to the bottom of the upper baffle rather than the left of it. This doesn't work though as the lower drivers spider then fouls it instead. My solution was to simply lengthen the top baffle slightly and keep the horizontal panel to the left of it, just lowering it slightly.

I hope that makes sense. I'm sure a pic would make it simple to see.

Not gonna help you out since you've already started building tho' I'm afraid.

Cheers,
Simon

SimonNOS, thanks for the heads up, will modify can as necessary to get drivers in Tongue

Day 3 follows:

T nuts a little too large to fit in 15mm aperture created by handle so a little fettling was required Smile

Mykey, we need to keep the drills, just makes everything really easy when you dont have to bother swapping drill bits, drivers etc.

We used the connectors I had available. Already made a couple of leads using 8core 4mm. That is one job that I dont find much fun in.

I had not thought of the different colour for the phase bung, I will have to give it some consideration.
Any particular type of paint you would recommend for painting you bung ?
( just re-read the above, thought it sounded bad, and decided to leave it there anyway LOL )

Saul: camera is a small canon ixus 850 I try to keep close at hand, convenient to keep tucked on belt when building to try and capture fun stuff.

I also use a canon 5d with some nice fast glass and off camera strobes for more interesting stuff but I try and keep that away from metal filings and saw dust. Its way too heavy for snapping in a workshop. Will probably try and get some decent shots when build is finished and the saw dust has died down.

Markk & Wafflesomd:
Thankyou Smile

Those speakers looks really good

but why did make the on the Horn end thicker?
As far as i know its different on the plan.

http:/

Posted By: Sinfinity
Date Posted: 25 April 2009 at 10:05pm
Router & bit details from memory
Router makita 3612 though any decent 1/2" router will do fine here. Make sure its got an accurate depth stop and check this periodically when cutting. Regardless of how tight you get the chuck the bit will slowly pull itself down over many cuts. Make sure that the bit is always sufficiently clamped, you wont want to catch it if it heads your way at 30000rpm. Big smile

Bit = 12mm standard kitchen plunge cutting bit

Collet = 30mm. Comes with quite a few routers as these are purchased by kitchen fitters who use 30mm worktop template cutting jigs.

Then horn end was not made thicker on purpose. We decided to use the handles to provide a fixing point for the grill, and then angled them to make them look pretty.

Cheers
Matt

thats not gona work nicky because everyones router will have a different collet template spacer around the cutter, so the sizes will vary

I t does work, trust me, and every kitch fitter on the planet. One point is that the cutter is 12.7mm (1/2" in old money) not 12mm but all router jigs I have used run on a 30mm OD guide, the 12.7mm cutter is usually spec because they are cheap and a standard. But both my 1/2" routers have 30mm followers, my 1/4" has a 20mm I don't know if this is a stndard as the router cost £18 (inc a 110V ceeform) and is Makita "lookey-likey-chinese" but I only use the thing with a 6mm round over so I have never treid to use the guide tingy.....

hmmm - im not convinced.

I'll have to have a look on the ELU router i use.  Im sure the spacer is bigger than 30mm.

you may well be right Smile

Posted By: Sinfinity
Date Posted: 26 April 2009 at 1:41pm
I have a kitchen fitter that has been installing for over thirty years. Absolute craftsman that is a pleasure to watch / learn from.
He still has some old ELU gear, including a portable table saw.
The router jigs from Schreiber days thirty years ago used 30mm OD. The jigs are still 30mm, hence why the collet that comes with most of the makita 1/2 routers is 30mm.

Day Four,
Cable installed and cable clipped,
four coats of white so far,
external screws holes filled with wood filler and hardener, sanded
one external coat of black.

This filter was perfectly clean and a nice bright blue colour. After sanding the filler it looked like this. At least everything on the filter is not in our lungs Smile

Few more coats of paint, drivers to load and then testing.

A quick question for those with far more knowledge than I.
How to connect two sets of 8 core 2.5mm onto the back of an 8 core speakon connection. Looks a little tight for soldering.

Two ways, one CHEAT, link the 2 nl8s with a bit of heat shrink threaded over the link wires and then just strip out 10mm of the insulation wrap the "tap-in" wire to your driver around the exposed bit, solder and then heat shrink up....

Or the way I do it is with hellerman h30 sleeves, lubed and applied over the pair of pre-striped conductors with the "fanny stretcher" tool, this sleeve holds the 2 conductors together tight so they can be soldered as one onto the NL8 tab abd then the sleeve pushed down to give a rock solid assembly.
A good tip here is to wire some driver to the "input" NL8 and some to the "output" NL8 to aviod it getting silly tight on the one connector....

I've also seen PCBs used for this but a lot of hassle for a short run and can go wrong as EV will testify when their TG7 amps blown all the copper off the insides of their X-line subs...

4.8mm/0.5mm part insulated spade terminals, heatshrinked on the end

These take up to 2.5mm2 cable, then heatshrink over the top of it all

Speakons are too close together to solder, any looseness = bang

This worked well for me, took ages but worth it. Two nl8's and one nl4 linked up on back of each cab.
I forgot to take the camera iwth me so pictures will follow of that.

In the meantime the offcuts from the 15" baffles have turned into something a little more attractive.

Offcuts pva'd together, spun around a bit and then polished =

The cabs have had another two coats. The castors are loaded. Pictures with loaded speakers up soon...

The first two 10m 8core 4mm are ready.
My first chance to hear them should happen in the next two weeks, just got to finish cabling up the rack.

Congratulations on getting to the end of your course,
How are your scoops coming on now that you have got some spare time ?

Where do you get that cables?
I cant find any 6 or 8 core cables here. How much for a 1m of it?

Yep, it was canford.
I bought 60 metres, thought that would probably cover anything I would ever want to do :)

Thankyou. I am very happy with them. Just a little left to finish on the second one and I shall be able to move onto the amp rack.

Nice build mate - given me some helpful ideas for when I build a pair in the next few months.

How have you wired the cabs up? I can't quite work out the 8-pole/4-pole combination. I'm trying to decide on the best way to do it for my setup and the current plan of using one input and one output speakon per signal (ie 6 in total) isn't ideal. 2-pole amp outputs don't seem to leave me with another option though.

did you put the "4 large holes" in the rear brace?

some people do, some don't, im not sure which to do.

obviously the drivers share a chamber of about 70litres if they are there. and about 35 each if theyre sealed off.

Got a feeling the chambers are not quite the same sizes, so the common chamber keeps things equal for both drivers.

I'm not sure that the chamber behind each driver has an equal volume and thought that the two 15's would need to operate perfectly together.

If each chamber has a slightly different volume would that change the characteristics of each 15 causing problems ?

Im not a designer, therefore if the plan specified it, it got done. I would hate to expend that much effort and get it wrong. Just been through all my pics and can't see a single shot of the holes. Will update that on Friday night.

Deej -  8 pole / 4 pole as follows.
8 pole (+1, -1) linked to 4 pole (+1, -1) as a pass through to save cabling time, used to drive subs
4 pole pins (+2, -2) not used. I have four short 1m patch cables so I can
plonk the xtro on top of two 18" reflex bins and only have to run one 8core
                                      to each stack.
8pole (+2, -2) to drive 15"s
8pole (+3, -3) to drive 8"s
8pole (+4, -4) to drive compression

Thankyou to everyone who has compliments our way.

@ sinfinity: that seems like a very tidy way of wiring the cabs up. Do you have some sort of adapter/patch bay so that you can get all the different inputs from different amp channels into a single 8 core cable?

Posted By: Sinfinity
Date Posted: 14 May 2009 at 5:36pm
Im wiring it up next week on a 19" rack which shall live behind the amps and form a patchbay.

Three sets as follows.

4 x (+1,-1) wired in parallel to 2 x (+1,-1,+2,-2) wired in parallel to 1 x (+1,-1,+2,-2,+3,-3,+4,-4)

then I can take the output of any amp and patch it anywhere I like.

I have two 10m 8core 4mm and two 20m 8core 4mm ready to go which I hope will cover most places I could ever end up.

The patch panel should make it easy to put two channels of an amp for floor monitors down a 4 core and save a little mess on the floor.

I will put pics up as soon as it is completed.

trust me mate, they will blow you away. have a bit of play with crossover points and slopes and you can get them sounding stunning. played a gig at a night in bristol, two rigs linked up, X-tro's on one, some Community (dunno what) on the other side - had people coming up to me all night saying how much cleaner and more ''hi fi'' the X-tro's sounded - but with such a brutal kick. great cabs.

Plugged in, turned on and played with very quickly.

The suggested setting were loaded into the ultradrive but did no take account of Mykeys XT8 horns so will need tweaking.

Looking forward to cranking them up during the next month.

Cheers
Matt
