Hi Guys and Gals,

Just about to get on with a the X15 MODDED build i found on the forum,

http://www.speakerplans.com/FORUM/x15-mod_topic25221.html - http://www.speakerplans.com/FORUM/x15-mod_topic25221.html

After building a few X15's and never getting around to loading/fitting crossovers i thought as the cabs are smaller and can still use the 15MB it could be worth a go.

I have just stumbled over a prebuilt crossover on the net (sadly not too clued up on building my own/making L pads and such yet, but am trying to learn) and just wanted a few experts advice on the matter,

Here is the link for a 1800 Hz crossover and just wanted to find out if it will cut the mustard so to say.

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=294-324 - http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=294-324

I will be using the
http://www.p-audio.co.uk/products/db_product_2_6_bm-d450.htm - BM-D450 unless any other suggestions pop up...

Thanks for any help in advance Smile

Matt

I still don't know how much crossover is too much crossover. I mean I hear those store bought speakers systems they sound cool.

I feel i might have to get lower frequency crossovers for my 6 units. I got Dayton 5k in 'me with some 15" + 1" drivers

pro audio parts do crossovers theoretically made for these cabs. try ring them and talk to them.

I did after found a post from yourself recommending phoining PAP in another thread. they tried the're best but the guy i got took my phone number as said he would ring me if any came in. they don't sell PAP VX1 - 2 anymore. so they said they would look for the VX1 - 2 in cabs they get for spares and such. hence my looking elseware just to have a gander.

I personally think it would be ok... i just really wanted a kind of nod as it is the lower end of the crossover spec for a 1" driver.

All threads i can find say the cross over should be around 1000hz - 2500hz depending on the COMP driver, and at 1800 i think i can go with either the http://www.p-audio.co.uk/products/db_product_2_6_bm-d450.htm - BM-D450 , altho maybe also the http://www.p-audio.co.uk/products/db_product_2_13_sd-450_n.htm - SD-450 N as it seems to have a very low crossover point.

If i was to go with a 1.5" - 2" COMP driver i think it's around the 1.2hz point, if this is wrong please let me know.

Sorry mate to be the bringer of bad news,

I use the PAP VXM crossover in my X15s which are loaded with the BMD450 and a 9db l-pad and I am happy with it.

Apparently the B&C DE250 comp driver is a better option/upgrade though as ceharden/norty have commented on I think.

Cheers,
Angus

The l-pad is easy to construct and if you look here  http://www.speakerplans.com/forum/my-18-reflex-build_topic14850_page2.html - http://www.speakerplans.com/forum/my-18-reflex-build_topic14850_page2.html you can see what I did to mount it.

9db was a figure quoted on here by Dom I think when he was building a variation on the XM15 plan from this site and seems to work OK for me.

l-pad will basically attenuate the top end as the comp driver is more sensitive than the mid driver. there is a calculator for it here http://www.sengpielaudio.com/calculator-Lpad.htm - http://www.sengpielaudio.com/calculator-Lpad.htm

I used big heavy duty ones from CPC or Farnell. if you enter 8 ohms and 9db cut in the calc you get 4.4 and 5.16 needed. I used 2 off 2.2 ohms in series for the 4.4ohm leg and 1 off 2.2 and 1 off 3ohms for the other leg.

Hope this helps mate.

Found the link to CPC for the resistors. Can't remember whether I used 100W or 200W as not near cabs at the moment.

Hmmm I cannot get those parts not where I live. Buying those things online would be a real pain not to mention a major shipping headache.

Plus I'm going through too many comp drivers, six so far. Does anyone have an off-the-shelf/ online version to the PAP VX1 or 2. There must be a compatible crossover unit I can get online.... HEEEEELLP!!!!

Thanks angus, that is very much going to come in handy,
and thanks to everyone whos thrown something in :)

i have found so much info on this site...

http://www.termpro.com/articles/xover2.html - http://www.termpro.com/articles/xover2.html

It's given me the basics i needed as an understanding of how everything worked together and why, i'm figuring things out as much as possible, and having the site explain all the functions and even give a GRAPH of all the components you need and the ratings and crossover points.

(and who is clever enough to find the pic of the old man in the purple pimped out truck with the bass speakers LOL)

I am now embarrassing myself as i have forgotten the name of something i was going to say i have been looking at to buy and test make a crossover. "cheese boards" ??? Those electronic boards to test circuits and components before final placement on a PCB. either way, i thought this might be good for testing and such...anyone else used them for this purpose?

The L-pads kind of still confuse me... but I'm trying to wrap my head around it... I'm trying to understand the meaning of "attenuate the signal", i know this happens the more components you use, "linked to it's order" i thought the slope caused it to rise such... 6db - 12db - 18db slopes so confussuled as to where the 9db came from, or is that the meaning of the l-pad... we're trying to lower the slope ??? i'm close... i'm sure lol...

Cheers guys, thaks again

Bread boards? they're generally pretty low power handling in my very limited experience of them though...
