my pond consists of a dip in the concrete yard where water pools. It has 3 stepping stones made from pallets so that one can cross it without getting a shoe full of dog/rat piss.

Make sure you put plenty of carpet down over the stones at the back. Its amazing how easy they come thru with the pressure from the water.

this is the view from house, is a lovely garden, advantage of living with a consultant accountant and teacher. Just see pond before it was dug on left
todays work - didnt get much done cos it kept pissing down, had 3" of water in at one point, kept pumping out but the groundwaters so high it just fills up again.
Got the first layer of sleepers cut to size and placed around edge. dredged out all the winters crap from the bottom which absolutely stank etc... Hoping tomorrow to get some paving slabs to build up the earthworks a bit, and get things moving on. Bloody heavy those sleepers!!!

Newts (or some types) are quite rare / endangered in Britain aren't they?

yup, illegal to catch them, or disturb their habitat (your pond) in any way. altho quite cool to have, will be annoying if it gets messy and needs a tidy up as you wont be able too.
heres my project now, the walls are now bolted solid, nearly full (24hours straight with hose on)
and the backend coming together, aqua-garden-bog thingy going in the back, ton or so of earth to fill it in. Waterfall to go down the middle instead of pipes
