Hi All

I'm really a newbie to speaker designs. Just stumbled onto this great website when reading about it from another forum.

My intention is to build a something that covers low-mid to the bass region around 250hz down till whatever the cab can produce in a home audio setup.

My question is whether the hd15 cab can go up till 250hz.

I've noticed from dave's sims that using the pd154, the hd15 cab can do up to 300hz at 100db. Does this mean I can use this design for my purpose?

Thanks

Ive read that people use them up to 200hz. Yes the response seems to go higher, but perhaps its sounds funny or honky/?

What we need is a usage guide for the HD15.

My system sounds noticably worse when crossing all the way up at 250hz rather than 200 or 220, muddier i guess

guys, thanks for the valuable replies.

just noticed that norty303 reported in a http://speakerplans.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2204&PN=1&TPN=2 - thread with pd154 showing the below graph:

the graph showed a very sharp dip at around 250hz. i might be able to get away with crossing at 220hz...

Generally it is recommended to crossover at least one octave below (or above, depending on high or lowpass) such things. If one wants to go with 220Hz I think the filters have to be very high order. 4th order might not be enough to get a good total response.

Anyways, I don't know where this graph above was taken. The 250ish dip could be a room problem....

Wow that's such a big dip i'd say something else is going on, like the monitor ran out of red pixels in that part of the screen
prolly find he high roll-off starts earlier & some measuring artefact has flattened out the top of the graph

if you're crossing them low, hd15s sound pretty awful above 180hz IMO. i think the real problem is that the music starts to contain much more delicate information and a folded horn path adds too much time-base distortion. cone break up probably plays a part as well, especially with the less suitable drivers.

basically, i think the horn has the sensitivity it needs right up to 250, but the clarity is too poor. i cross mine at 150-160 to my porn horns, with a gentle 12 or 18dB slope. sounds nice 8)

hey joe, are those your 2 porn horn mid tops and 4 punishers on speakerstore construction pics? Link http://www.speakerstore.nl/index.php?l=nl&pg=12&prjID=18 - here . They look really nice and you did well to bring together all at the same time.

Are you also running some HD15s above these punishers? So your'd have your punishers from 40-90Hz, the HD15s from 90-160Hz and then the porn horns above that?

Bet it sounds loud and sweet.

yeah, i built that system, but it's not mine - itsybitsy 'chillout' (ahem, 4 punishers...) own it. i kinda wish i hadnt had to hand it over, cos it sounds f**kin sweet and quite frankly its much more of a quality build than my own rig, most of which was put together in a hurry a couple of years back.

loophole/itsy linkup has been planned for months, the 4 punishers and 4 hd15s will rinse the bass like little else, but as yet its failed to materialise. one day :)

I think Dom posted some plots of his HD215's which are probably a little more representative.  Mine were done indoors with mic about 5inches off floor at 1.5m.  Room is fairly small but well damped (read - full of crap!)

argh... just when i'm decided to build a pair of hd15, and about to buy the pd154 tomorrow...

loophole, what drivers are you using with your hd15? is it any different from a hd15 with pd154?

thanks.

hey, you'll be disapointed with the results of 2 hd's. like it says in the plans
they are designed for 6+ per stack. 4 sound good for a compact mono
stack though.
i wouldnt want to cross mine any higher than the 160hz mark.
