Dunelm Mill sell polyester wadding / batting if you have one anywhere near you. Its the stuff people use to make quilts / padded jackets etc. Or you can buy a cheap duvet and rip it apart.

Very nice build !

I'm going to build the same Sub but I don't understand why in yours there is a space from the sides panel to the reflex mouths that in the B&C project I don't see. I like it because you can fix a normal grill without any problem but I don't know the misure of that distance...

pleese help me!

Date Posted: 09 December 2009 at 9:17pm
hey thanks for the comment,

yes i extended it at the front so that i can add a grill and foam. It doesnt matter how much you extend it by, it depends on the grill you use etc.

Posted By: Fiore_89
Date Posted: 09 December 2009 at 9:26pm
thanks for your answer, but if you extended it you extend the lenght of the reflex conduct too?

Posted By: Ryan94
Date Posted: 09 December 2009 at 9:34pm
do you mean the port. if so then as long as you keep to the original design and then just add on how much you want onto the design then it wont afect the port.

cracking job Ryan.
good to see those 186's getting used, they'd still be sat around gathering dust in my lock up waiting for a re-cone.
can't wait to see a fully painted and rigged up system.

Any thoughts on which mid/tops you will be making?
I'm about to finish my own 18" bass reflex (18sound design) and was hoping to get some ideas.
Great build by the way.

hi,
im going to be building single 12" reflex cabs all loaded with BMS.
i would sugest a single or double 15" or 12" depending on where you want to cross them over and how many subs you have.

I will be building 2 12" cabinets Fane design. (but still no idea what to load them with)
I reckon that should work over a single 18" crossed at 100hz.

Ryan, which plans are you going to build? There are many reflex plans out there...

wicked bins and wicked build, liking the Sub 18 a lot.

What does it work out price wise to make these with all the ply used (and the hardware like handles/speakon plates/castors)?

hmm well i used MDF for mine but lets say around
£50 for a decent sheet of ply
£25 for the casters
£5 for the handles
£5 for the speakon plate and connectors
£18 for the aldcrofts (depends on what colour and quantity oviously)
and i cant remember how much it cost for the grill and foam but i think it was between £20 - £30

so about £130 Smile

what wadding/insulation did you put in the back of these cabs/what would you recommend to use and does it make a big difference?

also how did you manage to get all this out of one sheet of 8 x 4?

did you keep the port hole length the same size at 320mm? and how much did you lengthen the box by at the front to fit the grill in?

Thanks

Dave

Hi Dave,

For wadding i used an old duvet, didnt really notice much difference but left it in there anyway.

It all manages to fit on an 8 by 4 sheet just, i would send you a cut sheet but i did it by hand on a peice of paper.

The Port was left at 320mm and as for the grill, i added 30mm, but this will depend on the thickness of the grill and foam etc. just make sure you leave enough or the driver will end up hitting the grill.

Ryan

Right ok, i will try and work it out myself haven't managed it yet though.

Thanks for your help.

Posted By: mikey bear
Date Posted: 31 March 2011 at 12:13am
here's my cutlist...with 5mm added here and there for rebates and a 30mm recess at the front.
As you can see there will be enough left over for bracing.

Posted By: DaveSoall
Date Posted: 31 March 2011 at 4:19pm
thats brilliant, thanks for that.
I take it the shelf is the Port whole piece? shouldnt that be 320mm?

Posted By: mikey bear
Date Posted: 31 March 2011 at 4:59pm
when assembled the front baffle accounts for the missing 18mm if you get my drift

Posted By: DaveSoall
Date Posted: 31 March 2011 at 6:35pm
oh right, yea i see thanks.

how important is it to keep the overall internal size at 183L because once you add your bracing and wadding at the back that takes a fair bit off the size or is it better to make box slightly bigger to keep internal size at 183L or does it really not matter that much?

Posted By: DaveSoall
Date Posted: 31 March 2011 at 9:45pm
is glass fibre insulation good to use as wadding on the back of the cab?

Posted By: watchman
Date Posted: 22 May 2011 at 11:18pm
Ryan, what about this, Nikkolas wrote. He also told me that i cannot run the PD186 with the B&C cabinet because the ports would need to be 400mm !?

Posted By: DaveSoall
Date Posted: 22 May 2011 at 11:51pm
I was told the same however was also told it worked fine with the ports at original lengths and I built it like that and they work fine

Posted By: watchman
Date Posted: 23 May 2011 at 8:19am
that's good, thanks.
have had wood cut and am about to start build but havent decided on what driver to use, will the Fane Sovereign Pro 18-800 work in B&C Sub 18, looks like a good buy.
http://www.fane-acoustics.com/downloads/FANE_SovereignPro_18800P_Specs.pdf" rel="nofollow - http://www.fane-acoustics.com/downloads/FANE_SovereignPro_18800P_Specs.pdf
Also cabs are mdf will it need to be braced, and any tips on cutting hole with or without a router.

Posted By: DaveSoall
Date Posted: 23 May 2011 at 8:37am
For bracing I used a cross brace in the middle of the cab then a horizontal brace on the back of the cab.

Sorry not sure how well the fane will work compared to the pd

Posted By: watchman
Date Posted: 23 May 2011 at 8:39am
also want to fit fullsize grill. Ryan put front in 30mm for this, am thinking of going 50mm so can put batton for grill all the way round

Posted By: DaveSoall
Date Posted: 23 May 2011 at 9:10am
That will work fine however you might not have enough width on the baffle for Batton depending on how thick it is, I widened mine slightly then adjusted the length and port size to make up for it so internally it was the same volume.

Posted By: watchman
Date Posted: 23 May 2011 at 10:18am
i see, 50mm won't be enough then, was thinking of scewing batton to sides, top and bottom by moving baffle in enough to make this possible, not as simple as that then.

Posted By: DaveSoall
Date Posted: 23 May 2011 at 11:28am
Unless you just put the batton all the way around except for the sides where it doesn't fit. that would work fine

thanks

Posted By: mikey bear
Date Posted: 23 May 2011 at 1:40pm
my take on the grill batton problem can bee seen below. the cabinet has been extended forwards 30mm and baffle recessed by the same. i intend to install strips measuing 18mm x 28mm x* in all 4 corners of the baffle, meaning the port will not be affected. grill will be mounted flush with front of the cabinet. the extra cabinet volume created by moving the port forward is offset by the handle boxes.

Posted By: Ryan94
Date Posted: 23 May 2011 at 4:38pm
They look loverly mike! Wish i had thought of that when i built mine.

How much you leave for the grill is completely down to you. depends on the grill and what size foam you use, i used fairly small batterns so didnt need a huge resses.

In reply to watchman, yes i would recommend bracing, makes it alot stronger.

Going to be making another two of these in the next 6 months, gigs are getting more demanding. Just need to find the money now!

Ah ok. In that case it might be worth trying a box folded grill with captive nuts (my old turbo tq310's used cage nuts) fixed to the inside of the returns. Grill would then be attached with csk bolts through the sides/top/bottom of the cab. Quite an elegant solution i think.

I've been using Fane 18sb's in my sub18's and they really sound good. Would recommend them to anyone. Would like to hear pd186 loaded ones.

yer elegant, see you've sold yours, was tempted to buy myself aspecially after you reduced price but had already cut wood and bought a router.
have been looking at the Fane 18sb, seen at blue aran for £135, think  will  go for them.
where do i get grill.l
