does anyone know if the rode m3 ( http://www.thomann.de/gb/rode_m3.htm - http://www.thomann.de/gb/rode_m3.htm ) is as good as the AKG C1000s ( http://www.thomann.de/gb/akg_c1000s.htm - http://www.thomann.de/gb/akg_c1000s.htm ) thinking of getting one as its a bit cheaper |

I have owned quite a few Rode's but unfortunately not the M3, everyone has been at the least competent and some compare pretty well with the best whilst being sold at a modest price. The AKG C1000's does not have a great rep (other than in Germany) and is regarded as being a bit rough at the top end which is unfortunate considering its usual use. I have always found them just OK but a few of my mates would not use them to roll pastry. Tony |

Believe it or not the Behringer B5 is an excellent mic. It is made by one of the better Chinese Mic manufacturers. Tony |

C1000 is a microphone I first came across when I was around 10 years old. When I was around 13 I had already started avoiding using it. After leaving school, next time I bumped into it was when we had one dance group visiting our theater, their sound engineer used C1000s along with PG81s to mike up violins, cello and a drum kit. We tried suggesting him that we have quite nice selection here (Senn MKH40s, MKH800s, MD441s, Neumann KM184s, TLM103s, TLM193s, Schoeps, DPAs...) but he insisted on using the stuff he knows well, I sort of understand that also, but... Cadac/Meyer system really showed how rough and thin sounding C1000 and PG81 are.
For that kind of money, I'd go with Oktava MK012 ...I hope the sound engineer I was talking about is not hanging around here, after all he was british chap  , really friendly too! |

I have both, very similar. I recon the c1000s is tinnier. I bought the rode to use for alto flute when i went on tour last month. the c1000s did quite well on viloin. i hated the c1000s before i went on that tour but i quite like them since. CS1000 have never really blown me away either I own a pair. SM81 (not PG) would be a better choice. Or even a pair of used 214’s depending on your application.
