Im in the process of building 2 x12's however i wanted to use an rack mounted active crossover for
the compression driver and for the 2 12" drivers. Mainly because of the power difference and
frequency difference.. Is the only way to do this by having 2 speakon connecters at the back, 1 for the
compression driver and one for the 12" drivers?
And is this even the best way to do it??

probably is the best way yes.
you can get 4 pole speakon connectors. Its also common to have link out connectors wired up too.

Standard way would be 2 x NL4 (4 pole) speakon sockets.
Socket 1: +1/-1 terminals wired to your 2x12" drivers +2/-2 terminals wired to your compression driver Socket 2 (link out): Link all terminals to corresponding terminals on socket 1
Socket 2 is not essential but very commonly included for maximum flexibility.

I did think to do that but then how do i have mid frequencies with 'X' power through one set of wire
and high frequencies with 'Y' power going through the other,, when the other end of the speakon
can only be connected into one amp?

This is usually solved by having a panel at the amp rack with a 4 way socket mounted on it. on the inside of the panel you make two short cables to go to your amps.
