Hi there.

I have came across two "the box speaker 18-500/8-A" (Thomann.de)
Will they work in a G-sub?

This is the parameters that followed with the speaker.

Fms: 40,1Hz
Qms: 7,61
Qes: 0,45
Qts: 0,43
Res: 103,3ohm
Rms: 6,1kg/s
Cms: 0,09mm/N
Mms: 184,9gr
Nref: 2,86%
Bl: 23,8N/A
SPL: 96,6dB
Vas: 208,3l
Re: 5,5ohm
Rp: 84,1ohm
Lp: 49,0mH
Cp: 566,8microF
Le: 1,3mH

The driver costs 122euro. Should i just sell them and get the PD186 (255euro) or get to more of these and build two cabs?
I´m not out for the absolutly highest performing subs. Just for small events and mainly dancechart music. Got two tapco 6918 (single 18 reflex) and they are just a little to small for me.

Sorry for my spelling Embarrassed It´s been 10years since i opened a english school book..

tought i would give it a try.

http://www.thomann.de/se/the_box_speaker_185008a.htm - http://www.thomann.de/se/the_box_speaker_185008a.htm

It has higher sensitivity, plays deeper and just overall sounds better than my Tapco´s..

I could (only from comparing with my Tapco´s) clearly recomend these drivers as a budget alternative.

Is used Tapcos in serie paralell (=4r) G-sub on one channel and the Tapco´s on the other. On a T-amp TA2400 MK-X to compare.

Thumbs Up Walle,

Don't blame you mate! Sometimes you need to just try things out yourself. But be careful though, as sometimes it can become a waste of money! Glad for the update!

Thank you.

I got these two drivers cheap so had to try something with them.
I built two boxes and tought that if these did not work i´d buy PD or Fane to put in. But now it looks like i will be ordering two more of these Smile

Now it´s only the fun part left with fixing handles, grill and paint. Big smile

Is a bit of difference actually.

PD186     255euro
FaneXB    222euro
Thomann 122euro

And since a already got two so is it only 244euro to spend, changing to xb´s would set me back 888euro.

Hi,

The datasheet of the driver is http://images6.thomann.de/pics/prod/193265_specs.pdf - here . The X-max is 5,4 mm [(Hc-Hg)/2], or 8,15 mm if you use (Hc-Hg)/2+Hg/4. (Hg - height of magnetic gap; Hc - height of voice coil).

my question would be what's better? this or the fane XB?

Posted By: technofreak
Date Posted: 06 September 2010 at 3:34pm

They seem to be quite similar. In a 200 L box tuned to 35 Hz both have average maximum output of about 124 dB, but Fane is ultimately a bit louder below 50 Hz, whereas Thomann's is a bit louder above 60 Hz and has a bit smoother group delay curve. Both should be within their X-max limit at their RMS power - Fane's calculated X-max [(Hc-Hg)/2] is 6,5 mm, in spec sheet it's 7,5 - (Hc-Hg)/2+Hg/10; using this formula on Thomann's offering, we get 6,5 mm. If the Thomann's driver has good and consistent build quality and parameters, it should be one of the best budget 18" drivers.

Red - Thomann 18"

Orange - Fane XB

The have ohm le-18 horn loudspeakers that need new drivers.

I now have two G-subs with theese drivers.. I feed them with one TA-2400 1200wrms per box.

But will they survive say a Proline 3000 @ 1500wrms per box?
Or should i stay with the smaller TA-2400 or should i go even bigger as the T.amp D3400 @ 1800wrms per box?

I know the D3400 is not a recomended amp. But lets keep the question simple! How big a amp should i have to get as much as i can out of my budget G-subs without burning them up the first night! Wink

Keep the 2400.

So i´m almost finished with my Gsubs. Only grill left..

I sold all Tapco stuff and bought a pair of The Box ACHAT 215 instead.

Also got another 2400 instead of the 1400 i used to have for tops.

But the most important thing is that i´m halfway with my second pair of G´s Big smile

Maybe i will try some XB´s this time. Not desided yet..

Hi,

I'm reading this thread with big interest.
I've made a driver-profile in WinISDpro. Only unknown value was the Sd and because it's quite similar to the Fane Colossus 18XB, i've took the Sd of that driver (being 1120 cm^²)

If i want to simulate 1 driver in a reflex loaded box of 160L tuned to 35Hz (with a lowpass 4th order Butterworth at 100hz, highpass 4th order Butterworth at 30Hz and a parametric at 35Hz, Q=2 and with a gain of 6dB)

I'm using two quadrangular ports of 14 by 14 cm, because i want to make it with 4 triangular ports of 14 by 14 + diagonal

Transfer function magnitude: http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-QYTDC8SH.jpg - http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-QYTDC8SH.jpg
SPL: http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-YXJTZORQ.jpg - http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-YXJTZORQ.jpg
Cone excursion: http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-U4BT6UEG.jpg - http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-U4BT6UEG.jpg

Am I doing something wrong or am I just expecting to much from this driver?
Edit: I'm inserting 400W of amplifier power.

400w plus the 6dB of boost = 1600W as far as the excursion is concerned, which is why you've ended up over 10mm.

As noted further up the thread, the calculated Xmax could be considered to be just over 8 mm, so you won't have to reduce your boost much to stay within this (probably to 1000-1200W, at a guess). Or, reduce the box size and increase tuning frequency a bit to bring it under control.

Hope this helps,
David

Hi,

Been a while since I've been here, I do apologise for that Smile
Well I've dropped the 6dB boost and indeed the speaker was fine.

This is only a hobby for me, so i have no hopes :)

Outing the rig for the first time on saturday. I have not seen the place but they say it can hold 200p. I will be doing it for free this time since it's the first time and i can't give any guaranties that my rig lasts all night :P

But i'm hoping to be able to do "normal" parties and disco's (club it's called today i think? :S) up to 300p? And small Dubstep events up to 100p?

So i have had the rig out for the first time..

What can i say. Succes.. Sounded better and MORE than and had ever hoped for! :D
Everything is still ok even thou the dj kept driving the amps in to clip..
I'm very pleased when thinking about how little money i have spent! Thumbs Up

My biggest problem right now is to decide about drivers and amp for my second pair..

Alternativs.. (unless someone has another option :S)

1. Thomann drivers and ta-mkx 2400        (D=488 A=299 Total=  787Euro) (This is what i have today)
2. Thomann drivers and Proline 3000         (D=488 A=615 Total=1103Euro)
3. Fane XB              and Proline 3000         (D=888 A=615 Total=1503Euro)
4. Fane XB              and Crown XLS-5000   (D=888 A=711 Total=1599Euro)

I can't tell you so much. I have not compared it to anything but my old analog crossover.

It's easy to set up and got som limiters, eq and stuff but i have only set up crossover freq. with it.
Keep in mind that it's a rs232 (com-port) connection. I got that old Ibm laptop saved for things like this..

The Thomann digital LMS's are fine, they are Digisynthetic units and the limiters are perfectly OK. The front panel programming like the almost identical BBE units is pretty clunky but OK.

The PC software is again pretty basic but does a job.

AFAIK these units have proved pretty reliable. You really cannot go wrong at Thomanns price with 3 years warranty

Gap Depth = 11mm

Voice coil winding length =11mm

err  XMax = 0.0mm

Bets that performs well.

@tobvil. They are great for the money. Much better than the Tapco's i had before.
I got some pics at home with the drivers out. They look very well built. I will post them when i get home.
I love the handles on top/bottom, makes them very easy to carry between to people. But they are a pain to move around alone..
I use them alone on smaller events like weddings and they do just fine, to only problem is that you need something to put them on to get them high enough..
I cant't wait till i can afford to finnish my second pair of G-subs an replace the mk-x amps with prolines.
Here are some pictures i had on Facebook..

This is at the European moguls cup.

This is at a local park in my hometown Gävle. We have no permit for this and we try to be there every saturday trough the summer. Police have come by o cuople of times but they have never shut us down. (Yet)

Thank you!

Yes it does..  But i just started using the Berry's limiter as it is super easy to use.
I wish i could say the same about the T.racks but i always end up using my computer to change anything on it... Doing something via the unit takes more patience than i have Wink

Edit: You can save presets on the T.racks. And changing between different saved presets is easy.

Just by looking parameters they should be quite spot on drivers. Not heard 'em in g subs but in similar sized single enclosures. It's just a bass reflex after all. Next you'll need better amps to fully utilise the potential of 18g550's.

But atleast there have been some progress :)
The club this winter has been on the second floor with a narrow stair. I got tired of carrying the G-subs and wanted something smaller so i built 6 Tham15 but ran out of time so only two are finished and they are a part of my home stereo right now ;)

Also bought a Lab FP-3400 so i got something better then the TA-2400!

Quick question about the Thomann subs listed here, does anyone have them available in Aus? Or good place to buy them direct o/seas?

Been using the Gsubs for a couple of years now and they have been working fine. No problems at all. Been running them mostly on a single t.amp TA-2400 on the edge of clipping, sometimes "lghtly" clippin all night. I notice a big gain in spl without any change ni sound when the clip just starts flickering.

A couple of nights i have been running them with two Altair MF-12 one per box bridged. With thoose amps i needed to set limiters 1-2dB under clip. Otherwise they started sounding distorted. May have been x-max/x-mech issues.

Today it was time for a repaint

On this page are few plans for the 18-500 8a. http://www.lautsprecherforum.eu/viewtopic.php?t=4561" rel="nofollow - http://www.lautsprecherforum.eu/viewtopic.php?t=4561

This is a comparison from the site above between 18-500 BR plan (with 2 different port designs) and the JB-sub118 which I decided to build. If I understand correctly. Correct me if Im wrong.

Grau: Normal (Pegel-BR)
Gelb: Eckport (Mittelding)
Blau: JB-Sub118 (Tiefgang)

There is also a few other plans for the driver. Check it out!

One thing I noticed in the specs of these, also the Studiospares (Soundking) is the round wire coil. Tempted to back to back one of these with my XB 600's. There are some mighty cheap 3" coil NEO P Audios about too.

I'm sure nothing, just looking for the way they do them so cheap besides China mfr. No wonderful tech like inside/outside winding, edge wound flat wire coil, copper coil etc. No Kevlar impregnated cone.....
I personally would always get a used Brit/Italian driver but I would love to get one of these and compare. My 600w XB's will give up a bit of distortion at 600w with some 40hz boost in reflex and these are dual spider and all the posh bits. Pity Wally didn't say how they compared to the Beymas?

We use 4 of them for 3Years now in superscoop designs, 2of them did easy 500hours soundsystem and live sessions the last years - measured them few times also in reflex design...

...they are kind of nice, but they have a clear limit at +-1000w per driver  - The Xmas is not very good, U can use them better for "fullrange" or reflex design and small live music stuff -  its medium sound & bass (pressure) quality, but with quality amps its getting ugly pretty soon, like one guy wrote here just before clipping it is starting to get decent, thats all u get, I would recommend getting 2pd's or voids for the price of 4 thomann 18er instead, preassure & quality-wise, you would need like 8 thomann to compete against 4 pd's or similar price range just for "bass-quality", still a good bargain...

...The Paper is not varnished - that is a big no-go, but the rest of the driver is kind of solid & like mostly all china-licence stuff from thomann is running for a few years without problems.... getting pretty hot though in a scoop. We gonna varnish them with foam or some heavy paint and then run a few more sessions before an upgrade to new 18inch drivers....

I think that the 18-5008a is not suitable for a scoop...

@Miles. Nice review, as for the varished bit, dopeing cones is a DIY job.

@Dub Spec Sound    I recon the comparison is more low end 600w P Audio stuff.

They look similar in sims in 200l boxes, can't get that low flat bit that an XB does and seem to do that climb towards 100hz that all cheap drivers do.

Omega pro is overpriced, but in a kick type cab or some horns is cool at used prices.
Sigma pro is another thing, only 3" coil but nice driver, can be had cheap via Euro exchange issues at the moment. I'm told it goes well in a scoop too, Lev will have the details I think?

If it has to be new driver then The Box is proper value, but a used XB or Sov Pro makes more sense if available IMHO.
