For those people like me that haven't got rigs that cost thousands of pounds, just a nice rig that hard earned time and money has gone into (not saying the big rigs ain't had much loved hours and effort put into them either!!!!!!!). Will put pics of mine up when its finished - currently4 - 2x18" long throw subs 4 - EAW KF850 copies C audio SR amps 24ch Soundcraft with 150ft Multicore Selection of smoke, hase, lasers, strobes, static lighting (cannot afford moving heads/scanners yet)
Discuss lesser pro rigs and share with one another below?

What mic's do you use, any stage monitoring yet?

haha, true, although was testing it the other day and an old lady up the road complained as here china was shaking in its cabinet! YES!
Mics i use, mainly akg and shure stuff really. C451's, 58s, 57s, Some Sennheiser drum mics etc
Monitors, well...... got a pair of 12" & Horn and a pair of 15" & horn that are kinda a work in progress. Finished the 12's now but still need to get re-come kits for the blown 15" beyma drivers in the others.
what you running?

A lot of the DIY bass cabs are pretty much on a par with many "branded" cabs anyway. Tom Danley could quite easily have released the Labhorn as a branded product, as opposed to a free design. The drivers are even custom specified afterall.
The same could be said for all sorts of short BPH's. Are they really that vastly different from cabs like F218's?........not really.
It seems to really come down to the fact of being rider friendly or not.
I don't think the same could be said of mid/tops however.

me like most new builders have what i'd call an "amatuer rig"
dont get paid work but a lot of what I'v been doing my costs are covered by somone.
do live music of young bands, mainly local but starting to grow !!!
run
2x15" + 2" (jbl 2226 + paudio)
double 15 (kappa pro)
run off 2u500 matrix and 3x EV p2000
mic wise we are simple with sm57/58s and audix drum mics
all our own made cable etc
hoping to up grade speaker cabling andprob build another pair of 2x15s for some bigger events in the summer !!!
simple as a starting point for us

sounds fine to me, whats the kappa pro drivers like for the bins? I've only had one experience of using them in some of my own built cabs and they were alright but i've upgraded to PD now and you can tell the difference (but does burn a hole in the wallet!!!)
Some nice amps mind, £££££
|

kappas are great, like you said for the money ! if id have had to pay full price prob would have put a bit more in to get the pd's. but they are great !!!
amps havent cost me crazy money, done a lot of hunting and cash offers. got 2 p2000s at good cash prices and 1 for really cheap but with a blown channel. 2u500 was an ebay buy but perfect as it has built in crossover as well !!! also run a q66 on monitors
all runs off ultradrive with dbx eq's and comps
check out my posts for pics etc

Not finished yet, still needs a new paint job aswell, probley paint the braces on hds white and paint curve black.
This is everything we have at the moment, (anything thats decent nd not laughable lol) we are currently after some floodlights (as u can guess them tops no way near keep up, and the 15"flares are more for stacking purposes rather than actual sound. aiming for 12 1850's. 1850's loaded with void (soon to be run off infinate 8) hd's loaded with pd154's (ran off off qsc's 2450) going to run floods off infinate 5 and qsc 1450s.
But its still a work in progress.

And that's what's important. Everyone has to start somewhere and if it does the job then that's what matters. My rig is a similarly 'budget' ordeal: - Pair of 4 Acoustic BCS-112Ts with different drivers + Xover. Used to be Peavey HiSys 2XTs (just in the process of selling the Peaveys and buying the BCS cabs) - Pair of NJD 15" reflex bass cabs - Peavey 8.5C and C-Audio MR2450 amps - Behringer CX3400 Xover - Little 8 channel T.mix mixer
But it gets the job done which is important. For the mobile disco stuff I do, I wouldnt want a giant rig. I might upgrade it at some point, possible going active as I like the look of the RCF active range, it this is adequate for the moment.

Have a search through the forum, can't remember where, but a lot of the problems with those settings is the respective levels of the DCX.

Got the limiter settings sorted today, had a DCX expert talk me though it. Suprisingly straight forward when you know how. :)
The patch bay was something I knocked up the other day whilst also fitting some fans to the case., hence the reason why its all setup being tested in the living room. Looks much neater than it did before.....
It's now got:
Balanced out
Phono out
Aux in 1 & 2
FX send
FX return.
IEC power
Should shave valueable seconds off setup time :)

Had a small cheap budget system that I have slowly sold off. Still very much a newbie and thus still a lot to learn. Most of my system has been bought from forum members from the for sale section. For what I need it for, I don't see the point in buying new, I think I get a much better deal buying quality second hand.
System current consists of
Pair of Logic Systems ML12's Pair of Opus MP400's Pair of Wharfedale Bins (to be replaced by a pair of logic X300's or Opus SB215's - when I can find a pair) 1 x MC2 E25 1 x Lab Gruppen FP3400 1 x Cloud active filter (to be replaced by a berry or a driverack when I get a new pair of bins)
System will be used only to play soul and disco, plus the odd classic house set. None of this dub step cr*p or whatever the modern rubbish is.

many rigs here arn't amateur, what makes things amateur is how they are deployed and run.
as we cannot hear any rigs here, surely we cant call them amateur (although there is some i noticed which dont look up to much!).
assume bridged P2000 per 4ohm sub? i used to do this, sounded awesome!!

The system hasnt made anywhere near its own cost back through being paid for it's use, let alone a living!

being paid doesnt make you pro, i would consider a professional, someone who has been doing it years, and engineers multiple channel sources to a high level of standard getting paid to do so.
many may get paid, but are still amateur!!
technically im a professional (make a living, head tech, full time, dont cockup much) but id never go around classing myself as one, people who do are generally cocks in this industry!! ''i need blah blah like this, it sounds awesome, dont worry im a professional sound engineer'' lol

Other thing for me is most guys on this thread prob buy one peace of kit at a time, pull together what they have over 2-5 years etc as they learn and build their system as they know more and more about what they need and want.
so even though a few of the guys on here look like they have a lot its been a gradual process to get there as they dont have a pro backers/company.

Couldn't agree more.
I consider myself a true amateur. I don't earn a living from this industry and I know nothing about sound engineering (I'm learning the hard way)!
My rig (if I can call it that) started of with cheap budget tops & bins (wharfedale) and a gemi amp. Overtime I'm slowly upgrading as I get some spare cash and learn what would be suitable for me. Just need another amp and a decent set of bins and I will be happy - for what I need it for.
Done my first gig on Saturday, 40th birthday party for a mate - free of charge. I do it for the love of music!

Isn't there an obvious difference between being *A* professional and being professional about things?

I think you can only class having a professional set up if you (the main engineer and owner) is working full time in the industry.
In the past I considered my rig as being amatuer where as my friend had nearly the sae set up and it was his fullt ime job and i considered him to be a proffesional

It was good thanks Jace, although I didn't quiet manage to play all the music I wanted to hear, lol, had to play for the crowd. Love the MP's, could do with some decent bins to go underneath them now.

Do you know if the chap down the road from you still has the opus twin 15" bins? If so he may want shot of them real cheap ;) Your be selling that smart car of yours soon, too spunk all the money on big boxs with magnets in :)
Thats the problem with DJ'ing you rarely get to hear what you want lol

Think he may still have them, yeah maybe but I think they have had a bit of a hard life. Haha, yeah, I'm think I'm slowly getting the bug, I can't stop spunking money on equipment at the moment.
Mate , your right there, you never get to play what you want.

Offer him £300 the pair! He may just want the space more than the money you never know your luck. Hard life or not will do you ok for a year or so then Ebay them :)
