im in the proccess of designing a portable speaker system but im new to most of this , apart from being a trainee carpenter and a free party enthusiast !! ive started lookin into the technical side of things alot more this year and ive got a basic understanding of driver ts parameters and abit of the easyer/novice stuff but im confident i could build some good quality cabs any suggestions or general advice from anyone on any level would be great as this is gunna be my first build

yeah well im still in the proccess of desingning it but the cost is gunna be split between me and three mates and we are willing to put some cash into it so the budget is basically whatever its gunna cost !!

No problem :) I have built a set of X12s myself for my soundsystem. We have eminence delta 12s in them and some cheapy compression drivers. We are in the process of upgrading the compression drivers and have had a number of suggestions. We are going for the BMS 4538 heard some great things about BMS and not a bad price either. If you look in the general forum you will see a thread started by me about compression drivers which may be worth a read but I'm sure any of the drivers people reccomend on here will definetly be a good option. |

oh really , how do they sound ?
ive got four relly old school mid tops of similair dimensions to the x12 but they've had some wear and tear as they wer hand downs !! but it gave me something to play around on for abit !
might i ask what kind of wattige your running off your system ??
ive heard good things about alot of different speaker manufacturers so it throws you off abit when thers so much variety . would you reccomend the eminence delta 12's for the x12 design ??
yeah everyone really seems to know what theyre talkin about on this site , ive learnt most of what i know on here !!

I haven't heard them myself taking abit of a chance but if you have a look around on here there is a lot of good things said about them. Well our tops are bi-amped so the mids and hf have a seperate amp mids get 825W a side and Hf im not too sure about and our sub gets about 1800W pictures of my system are in the show off your soundsystem thread well I do like the sound of the eminence delta 12s in the x12 but they are a budget driver and I'm sure the p audio driver you mentioned will do a better job. The deltas do the job and I am happy with them however but still contemplate upgrading to some p audios or precision devices at some point. Ye this site is a wealth of knowledge Iv been reading it for a while before building my system I just try and soak all the information in! |

yeah looks like the p-audio drivers will do the job !
oh right , do you run them off different amps because of the different frequency range or just because thats how its done ?? i have had a look in the mid tops i alredy have , brushed aside the cobwebs , and both drivers and the hf are wired up to the same speakon .... what would you say is the most straight forward way to wire up a rig to the amps and everything ?? you clearly seem to know alot more about this than me so im all ears ! ill check out your system next thing , do you use it for free partys and shit ??

Well in most tops you buy off the shelf they will have a passive crossover inside the box that will seperate the frequnceies. for me it was easier this way as it meant i didn't have to design a passive crossover or buy one for inside the speaker plus i couldnt see any to buy off the shelf that handled the power. The ability to change crossover points was another factor that appealed to me. AS for most straight forward im not sure what you mean. If you mean speakon or whatever then speakon is without a question the one to use, its industry standard. for bi amping tops however you need four core speakon whcih is basically two wires combined into one so 2 different signals can be sent down it. Havent used ours for free parties yet but that is the plan only finished it a couple of weeks ago. we've used it for a couple of birthday parties, pub/club nights and the like... |

yeah i thought speakon its just the amps my mate has left at my house have xlr's and arent really gettin used !
the rig looks sick mate ! id be stoked if that rocked up to a free party ! haha get on and make some noise !

Well the crossover splits the full frequncy to mids and highs and obviously this needs to be done in a way that both the speakers get the right amount of power to make the box sound even. I did look on blue aran but couldn't see any that would handle the power needed for the deltas and it was easier for me to bi amp anyway as i had a berry ultradrive and a spare amp. You dont have to create your own crossover points as i said you can buy passive crossovers ready made but most people on here will reccomend you have a go at building your own. %20 - http://www.bluearan.co.uk/index.php?browsemode=category&category=Speaker_Components&masthead=Passive_Crossovers&subheadnew=2_Way_Crossovers they are passive crossovers they simply split the signal into the HF and low frequncy at the points stated in the description. Ah right well XLRs are fine as long as you know how to wire them (I couldn't tell you the right way) but your best having speakons on the box you build. but you can just make a cable that goes from XLR to speakon however the amps may have binding posts as well? They look something like this %20 - http://asia.cnet.com/i/r/2007/hav/62013047/sc004.jpg If they do have that I would use them, you just put the bare wire of the cable into them. haha cheers man were really happy with it been out almost both days of every weekend since we built it. planning some end of school and beach parties for summer... should be good :P |

im gettin to terms with frequencys and all that alot more now so i should be able to get my head round this ... hopefully !!... so in the x12's do you have each one of the 12" drivers respond to different frequencies ? or both the same and just the compression driver doin the higher frequencies ?
also could you recomend any good amp manufacturers ? ive heard crown are pretty bangin but some of ther products are quite pricey , which i dont mind payin providing its worth it !
im familiar with binding post as i have an old bang and olufsen system at home and that uses them .... one of the two amps my mate left at mine also has binding posts
haha its suprising about the amount of active free party crews ther are , cant beleive your still at school !! i never got taught any of this speaker science where i went !! you must be pretty enthusiastic bout it .... do you dj at all ??
