Iv'e just bought 4 of these that are in really bad condition and in need of some work, does anyone no what size the cross bracing is as all off them need replacing as are all completly missing with tears in the wood where theve bin ripped out

they didn't have any cross bracing.. if yours show the remains of some, they were added afterwards by someone. i have a good few of these.. they can take a good bit of work to make them rattle free. |

Cheers for that, would you say that it would be better to replace the bracing as it used to be inn and must have been fitted for a reason |

not sure. none of mine have bracing. i have 4 x singles, and 4 x doubles... half of each originals, half copies. none have bracing. they are all very old by now.. often the copies seem better just by being newer to me. 15mm ply really isn't that thick. one thing i've always done when fixing these up is doubled up the top, it's the biggest unbraced section in the whole box so i think doubing it makes sense.. what i've always done is basically just gone round the boxes knocking on them with my hands... often you'll find the baffles (board the driver mounts in) are loose, get some glue in there and a few fresh screws, brace it with a small strip if needs be... the mounts for the access doors can be loose too... as can the one horn piece... just work out the rattles, and fill the holes etc. bracing the horn piece can't do any harm at all though. i remember minaximal was selling some.. he'd braced the horn section.. maybe if he chimes in he'll say whether he figured it was necessary or not. |

Yes, the older ones can rattle like buggery, once being on the road for
20 odd years, i did a quick brace job on some i had, as i had to gouge
out some wood on the back of the flairs to shoehorn some pd154's in
there, the flair panels were rattling even beforehand and the glue in
most of the rebates had let the panels come free so i glued it all up..
ideally best way would be to take the cabs apart and glue them properly,
but it's just not worth it. Cravings advice is good. I still have some SSE made TSE215's sat here with a case of the rattles, which i havn't used in years, but have a very respectable sound with their atc drivers, when i'm less busy i will try to sort them out to sell them. ------------- Subs + Barges = :) http://www.metaacoustics.com" rel="nofollow - www.metaacoustics.com |

i've never had to modify them to fit pd154s... it's proper tight, but they do just fit through the gap. when you have the hang of it it's easy. actually on most though i've had to take a mm or 2 off the driver cut out to get them in.. awkard to do.. i've found a small surform to be the best. takes a bit of time though. i'd also like one more pair.. essentially having 4 doubles a side would be kinda nice.. not shopping at the moment though. |
