work for a speacialist flooring company and we use some really industrial strength epoxy/ urethene resin paints.  i coated my mt 102 with some nice glossy black and it will withstand any amount of knocks, it wont chip and it looks ok too.

worth getting hold of the stuff, better thant your poxy 'garage floor paints'.

ok, i'll find out more. i know the stuff is called q tect. i'll ask at work regarding price, not going to be cheap but probably one unit (around 2.5 kg) would cover a few sq m's.

not too sure about the matt, but there is probably something wacky. different colours yes.

the company is called quattro, based in penrith, cumbria

http://www.quattro.org.uk - www.quattro.org.uk go to the resin floor screeds and coatings bit and look for q tect.

or send them an email/phone them. as i work for them i dont want to let on that i know how good the stuff is for coating speakers cos they'll know some of its gone amiss!!!

resin out

just got a call back from them and they're amazingly helpful. I properly recommend giving them a call if you need some advice.

I told them that it was going to be used for speakers and they recommended me a water based urethane paint. It dries a little slower than the q tect stuff so is easier to apply. It works well being brushed on or sprayed on, and the good advantages of it over the epoxy paint are that its not high gloss, and that it wont dry in the nozel of the spray gun because its not air activated.

They have a huge range of paints and can do almost any colour.

The paint we're going to order is called cover tyle silk. It costs £35 for 3Kg and should cover about 20m squared. I was recommended 2 to 3 coats. The finish is called silk, its not a gloss but is slightly shinyer than a completely matt finish. Its a two part paint. Its rock bastard hard and should last a lifetime.

Hopefully this will mean that I can avoid being ripped off by adam hall.

I might be preaching to the converted here but I've just used the textured speaker paint from Aldcroft Adhesives (textured rollered on) to do my cabs and it's very good.  Ended up using about 2.5kg on 2 X15's (overkill i think but easier than re-doing them later) but it seems tough as old boots.  About £17 for 5kg, they do 25kg too.

go with quattro mate. be carefull tho some of that stuf is rank! get you higher than the sun.  rooling is a good application technique, thats how we appy all of the resins, good roller with a watered down mix then a light sand cos it has a tendancy to run like an athelete then a final coat.

comes in other colours too....

spaceman could you help us out? when nick biotec rang up, they quoted him 35 a tin including VAT. when i rang up they then quoted me 45 a tin or something, plus postage and packing of 10 pounds. was a bit more than we bargained for, but then when my other mate rang up to order it, they ended up charging him 190 quid for 3 tins! bit of a difference innit........ any idea whats going on?

this quattro stuff is just a brand name, i'll phone up some paint suppliers and see if i can get it any cheaper.  Since we use paint and other coatings where I work I may be able to get a better deal and certainaly not have to pay any vat on it.  I'll let peepz know how I get on.

other colours, too. although  iwould say prices would vary with each colour due to mixing/matching, geneally primary colours.

not just a brand name mate, you want good resin then you've gotta fork out for it. if you love your speakers then obviously only the best will do.

oh about the price thing. i dont have a clue. i only work for them, nothing to do wit the retail bit

we're just painting our rig with quattro cover tile silk. its going on easy, dries nice and quick, looks absolutely wicked ;D
will have to see how it looks after the second coat, and how tough it is, but at the moment i'm well happy with it
not happy with the 65 quid a tin, but thats the way it goes.....

Hi guys, got some info on the paints from QUATTRO.  They do 3 types:Q TUFF---More your garage floor and heavy duty stuff, Q-TYLE---Good for your boxes but the colours are limited they do have a blue but it is not like the turbosound blue.  It's more of a mid-cool blue like the sky.  The red is like the looney bins colour all the rest of the colours are light with the exception of black and grey.

The third being AQUACOAT, again the colours are not appealing to me.

I found this other company called CROMADEX another uk paint manu, that i'm going to try on monday, they have similar products like QUATTRO will keep you posted.

Turns out that CROMADEX only sell to trade, so i ended up buying JOHNSONS EPOXY 2 BIT RESIN - TILE RED for 48 pounds for 5 litres which i thought was cheap. They also do a 2 bit water based epoxy resin for 80 pounds for 5 litres. (2 bit being the paint and hardener)

Bought some Epoxy 2 bit resin the colour was sh*t for the 1850 horns so, a mate of mine bought some car paint .  'French blue' looks nice costs 15 pounds a litre and is 'sh*te' in terms of scratch resistant will post some pictures soon, got in touch with this company hopefully they will match the blue.

Here is an email from Aldcroft, concerning paint.
Further to your enquiry regarding speaker paint, we have 2 products available.
139 is a water based paint suitable for application by roller or spray, if you use textured rollers, the paint holds the application texture and is scratch resitant.  It can also be touched up if damage does occur even after a period of time, without you having to recoat the whole box.

We also have a new coating C33-27 which gives very good results when sprayed with the correct equipment, it can be rollered but does not hold the texture quite as well as the 139.  This is a self crosslinker and is therefore water-resistant after a couple of days, the product is very rapid dry, fine coat 5 mins, heavy over splatter finish potentially about 30 minutes, depending on working temps.  The scratch resistance of this is far higher than the 139.

Both are suitable for wood & MDF & can be coloured to what you require, but we do require a colour sample to be sent to us as peoples views of colour differ too much, even when they quote  RAL or Pantone shades to us.
If you require samples of black, I can send you these if you supply me with company/address details, if you would like a sample to the shade of blue, please send the colour to:
