I don't quite understand what makes a professional subwoofer more desirable than a long excursion, high power handling car subwoofer. Many car subs have very long peak-to-peak excursion ratings, some with 32mm in each direction! Power handling is comparable, and at 4 ohms there is seldom an electrical difference to worry about here.

So from a technical point of view, what defines a pro sub?

Lesson #1 : You dont get something for nothing. Car audio subs only seem impressive because of the boomy car giving cabin gain. If you put a little 12" car sub tuned low, in a massive room,it will make only very low SPL.

Ever seen an efficient, high excursion, high power driver? Nope.

And lets not forget impedance.

Car Woofers nominal impedance differs greatly from Pro Audio Woofers.

And also most car subs have voice coils under 3 inch and a wimpy magnet[ low-very low bl]. And a lot of car subs have false readings on them. Like 800w max power, could be 200w rms.

Theres a huge difference car subs are specifically made to be mounted in the boot of your motor and left there, Now consider the size of a sports hall then consider the size of your car a car speaker will not hold its own in a sports hall even if it is rated at 800w. Maybe you should compare a 12" jbl car speaker with the jbl 2206 12" pro driver, frequencies and all you my understand that way.

Yeah and most car speakers are rated at such a low sensitivity. It would be possible to use them in certain pa cabs but you'd need much more extra power to get the same volume as higher sensitivity speakers.Vus more money spent on higher wattage amps.

And then again most car subs ain't suited to many enclosures. And when you do find a decent car sub its usually very expensive, even more than pa drivers.

So at the end of the day, don't bother using car subs for pa.

One of the requirements of prosound is a cabinet that doesnt require a forklift to move it.

It is a lemon. Its useless. It is for people who want even less fuel economy while oil prices rise

Forget that waste of materials. Get a PD or 18sound 21"

I dont think most car subs have the bl for bandpass or horns, but mabe ported or sealed?

If you really want to build a system with car subs, be ready to pay a very high power bill..
