I'm just wondering what people generally do when it comes to fitting the internal braces/shelves to the side panels.

i have worked out all my lengths and angles and am currently drawing up a cut sheet (x15). all the lengths are calculated to fit exactly flush with the side panals. i was wondering weather people just screw into the shelves from the outside or if i should route where they will be placed. and use a glue, push the shelfs into the routed spaces and then screw from the outside.

If so i take it this will mean adding 10mm (5mm each side into the panals) to all my lengths of anything that will be secured in a routed space???Smile

rebated or screw or biscuit, i use biscuits now but used to just glue and screw, worked fine just use enough glue and screws :)

and your other option is a batten running along the edge of the joint :)

Not really necessary IMHO, bill fitzmaurice details a pretty good method for making but joints away from the edge of a panel. Clamp a straight piece of timber to the outside panel so that its edge lies along the line the edge of the inner panel needs to be on. Next clamp the inside one to the timber and screw from the outside.

Best to put the shelf in first if doing it that way and build around it.

cheers for the info.

so craig would you suggest routing into the panel to make a ledge for the shelf to fit into. then glue and screw, or simply glue and screw straight onto the panel with no routed groove cut out?

alfiedring - would you use the piece of timbre flat against the outside and inside of the panel purely as a reference to make sure you screw the right place then remove once the shelf is screwed?
