Why aren't you just shifting the 8" horn to the side and using the extra space for the 1"? Looks like enough space to fit a small horn like a DE10 or some bullets.

Looks good, a small HF horn in the mouth of the 12" section wont affect the 12" much at all, its better to array vertically also so you avoid combing in the horizontal plane around the crossover between the 8" and the 1".

Very cool boxes. (symetry whore here as well) The midrange horn is particularly interesting. Have you done a bit of testing on it? I was attempting something similar and roasted hotdogs over the failed prototypes last week. In any case, I will be watching this thread with interest. I have a few 12's begging for new boxes.

im afraid i havent been able to do any testing due to lack of funds, its case of hit and hope with this one, im a firm believer that any problems can be ironed out with a bit of eq/crossover twiddling, im only doing this as a hobby to build a little party stack and dont actually intend to make any monies from the rig, just need to order these drivers now and see how it sounds

i really like it. it's a road i'd like to go down with my mt-121s. have considered building the xtro horn in to the top space, but yours has a lot more going on with it. did you do much working out for the 8" horn or are you just jamming with it?

I like it, its nice to see someone going back to basics a bit and just trying things out for the hell of it rather than looking at countless computer simulations and pages and pages of physics. Anyway, if it sounds as good as it looks it'll be immense.

faital do some nice small horns. they do a really compact 60/40 horn which may suit.

i only need a compression driver, im not trying to plug the horn mouth of the 12", just mounting the cd+horn there as its the only place that has room for it

You misunderstand me. I'm saying would a 6" horn rather than an 8"not be a more natural choice to bridge the gap between the 12" and the comp?

Risc_terilia he doesn't misunderstand you. He was asking the OP wether he would share his plans lol.
I would also be very interested in seeing the plans for the 8" if you have any and are willing to share?
As after building myself a pair of mt121s im not so satisfied with the 800-2k region so was thinking of building a 8" horn version also. Any maybe even using a 15" instead of a 12" for the lower mid

what high horn / driver do you use? (@ smoore)
the 8" section of the xtro is an easy one to pick because it's there, it's straightforward, it fits. having a lot of overlap between the ranges of the 12 and 8" sections could only give you good options for where to crossover etc.

didnt have a detailed plan, will measure all sides for you but youll have to tear your hair out using a planer like i did to get all the mitres right, remember this wasnt simmed so it might be improvable, and i have basic phase plug knowledge so again im not saying its right, will post measurements when i get some time in the garage but working 7 days at the minute,
its a bit late to start thinking about using a 6 inch now as the horns built, plus i think an ideal 6 inch horn mouth and length would look disproportionate to the 12", 8" will be fine

lol, sorry sounded a bit blunt, was gonna use a fibreglass 6"horn when i started this but never got a good enough finish, for the week it took to make a fibreglass horn, i made these 2 wooden horns in a day, and i chose the 8 over the 6 because i preffered it on paper, both the 12" and 8" (off the top of my head) are 98db1w1m 200 watt drivers so very well suited, (i guess)

By the graphs Faital seems pretty good and has good reputation in my book, not that I have actually listened FH104 on purpose...
What about BMS4540ND? Smaller overall diameter (and it should include the thread to flange adapter in package)

@ Gonzo I have what i've been led to believe are fane studio 12l's in my 121s. They have a fane badge on but the rest of the sticker has been removed.
I do really like the sound of them (have never been able to put more than 200w into each of them without them taking my head off). But I am using the cheapest of the cheap piezo motorolo CD's in the top. And as a result of which can't cross them lower than 2.3k.. Which may well be the result of me not liking the 800-2k region! However, I would still like to try a 8" just to make my tops look different and also think it would give me alot more options like you say..
As you suggest, I think I may try the 8" section of the X-tro on top of my 121's. Can anyone suggest an alternative cheaper 8" than the B&C 8pe21?

Very nice cabs. I have been planing something similar using a pair of XT8s i have, but with the 1" on top of the 8'' and possibly with the 12'' separate for more flexibility in stacking.(although they do look nice as one cab) Hoping to start building when we return from the Freek-out next month. Oh! and with 186s underneath.

Nice!!
Why the APT though?
|
Posted By: pfly
Date Posted: 06 December 2012 at 4:48pm
If I believe what my ears tell me and what Eminence and JBL spec sheets tell me, APT80 has quite similar sensitivity and frequency response between 10-20khz as does JBL 2445J/2380 combo. APT really isn't much of a supertweeter.
Other than that, nice box!

just sttled on the emminence as it does the frequencies i need and its small and cheap, dont think ive heard one but its changable if its that bad, proof is in the pudding i spose, flippers crossed

JBL 2445J / 2380A -combo is an old large-ish 2" driver & horn combo that does not really make much noise in the highest octave (around 10 to 20khz) and is quite well known for that.
I was looking for a super tweeter for a friend to go on top of 2445J / 2380A. He was going to get few APT80s but when I started inspecting and based on those APTs I've heard, I came to conclusion it really does not fit the application. They also seem to have quite distorted character.
See for yourself. One of these published graphs represents large mid range compression driver that wasn't exactly designed to do upper spectrum while other is marketed as a super tweeter.

Now if it works for you and you're happy, by all means, go on with that.

pfly your forgetting my point of this build, im not going for high end compete with the bigboys in clubs route with this, its a hobby i enjoy and only intend to entertain a few friends in the process, if it makes noise ill be happy, if the top end turns out to not sound how i want its an easy fix, @ bitsmasher, havent tested them yet, gonna paint soon then have a play around, will post back soon

It is easy to fix, true
I just have grown to dislike the APT personally.
You could use something like BMS 4524 combined to Faital STH100 or Eighteensound XT120 in there and be really happy.
IF the APT starts to bother you, then you could try something like that. Not too expensive.

I think you just tend to notice the 'sparkle' more with APTs as they haven't got any real upper midrange output like a large compression driver, I run some Fane 1"ers above some Cerwin Vega 2"ers and find they need huge (almost silly) amounts of EQ to bring the sparkle out.
What were those silly cheap bullets on fleabay everyone was harking on about?
|
Posted By: pfly
Date Posted: 09 December 2012 at 1:32am
Not all 1" drivers are born equal, few decades ago also many 1" drivers pretty much required some sort of supertweeter.
Is that 1" Fane mounted on CD horn? If so then it is just the nature of that horn and really needs a shelf EQ to make top end "sparkle"
|
Posted By: njw
Date Posted: 09 December 2012 at 3:47pm
|
I think you've hit the nail on the head there, I wasn't sure if the horn was CD or not but it must be as I've had to add quite a large shelf to it to bring out the sparkle.

ok, so ive loaded and painted these now and just been having a little play in the bedroom, i have the 12"playing from 170 hz to 900hz and the 8"playing from about 870hz to 3.5khz and the APT playing from 3khz to 20 khz, i have set the delays and got the cabs time aligned but have no idea of phase alignment as i have no tools to test them but thats for another thread...
my only concern is the although the 8" is doing its job taking stress of difficult frequencies from the 12" and 1" upon soloing the 8" it just seems im wasting the potential of such a nice sounding driver, as the frequencies it plays are so high theres just no oomph? it sounds very clear but obviousely no depth,
still havent heard these with any bins yet tho so maybe thats when all will fall into place,

only have two of these atm but more than happy with them, i have just changed the tweeters as the apt's needed too much power to keep up, movin house this month so im gonna try build a couple more when in the new place, i did promise someone on here the dimensions and rough plan for the 8" horn, but ive been slack as lately, we use these above 6 usbs and it humms!!! do want labs or similar tho
