Hey all. What is the best driver to load the X1 with. Would it be the Fane 18XB or the PD 186. Need all comments. P.S i play DUB, Reggae, Soca and R n B

Hey, if it has to be one of those, the PD 186 is basically the heavy eddition of the two, so personally would favor that one. But why don't you just go for the recommended SD-18 or Void Acoustics V18-1000 (which is most similair to PD 1850 btw).

I agree with mobiele eenheid.

Have you ever seen/heard a Void Acoustics V18-1000 ?

You may go ahead with a Fane 18XB or the PD 186, then one day you may hear someone else's X1s sounding much better than yours & you may want/decide to upgrade your drivers to the recommended ones which will cost you more money & time in the long run.

Thanks for the advice. Thats a few times now people have said to me try the void acoustics. Whats so special about them. What makes them better than the pd186. I have used them in the X1 but im wondering if i can find something better. Bearing in mind i play a lot of dub, reggae and r n b.

My personal views of the V-18s are that they are very powerful, they don't need as much power to get them pumping like the PD1850s do & they sound magnificent & tremendous in a variety of boxes.

PD186s are cheaper than the V-18s, PD1850s are more expensive than the both of them.

The way I do it is to buy 1 of each, test them all till I find the sound I want, then sell the others, otherwise meet up with other guys who owns various drivers & are willing to join in with the test.

It's a sweet feeling when your system is sounding good & you know you have nuff power left on reserve.

Hope you let us all know what your decision is.

Laterz.

Hi guys, well i phoned a few people and i phoned King Earthquake and they all were saying use the driver that was intended for the box. All the parameters are set for the box, e.g the frequency and power etc... I'm really stuck! The way to go is to try all the drivers but money is a problem. Thats £700 worth of drivers i will be buying. I might stick with the 186s. I know about them. What do you think. Or should i design a new cab. Such as scoops or horn loaded?

I have tried SD-18, V18-1000 and PD1850 in X1s.

Having tried all of them I use PD1850...

You will be hard pushed to hear any difference between the voids and PDs though.  I never could.  Certainly never noticed voids needing less power/being more efficient.

Right, so how does the 1850 differ from the 186 in terms of sound. I know the 186 is deeper but the 1850 has more power. Does the 1850 work well with the bandpass then. The 1850 wouldnt be as deep in the bandpass would it. Cheers

Did you go Carnival, did you notice most of the scoops ie, dub sounds were using PD1850 in the right boxs !!! I rest my case
Go to the next Dub session at Brixton, go in early and ask the sounds there.

Dom, what do the SD18's sound like in the X1? They are the only drivers that I can get here in NZ recommended for that cabinet. How much pwr can they take?

Thanks, Mike

Yes champion, i went carnival, aba shanti was wicked. He's using 186s though isnt he. The scoops are wicked. (Errol) King Earthquake gave me a design for a scoop, loaded with an 1850. Ill post them when i build them. My plans are to use the X1s with the scoops. Loaded with 1850s. What do you think!!!!!

What scoop design did Errol give you for the scoops? ASS design? If so you won't need the X1's.

Nah one he made himself before he made his boxes. Same thing he told me, he said i have a choice. Use the scoops for small venues and when it gets larger, just add on the bandpass. The scoops alone will sound heavy though. Errols cousin has some and they sound heavy, punch you in your chest, even outdoors!

SD18s sound great in the X1.  Never did any smaart measurements of the 3 different loaded cabs to give you any hard data, but the SD18 certainly models with a flatter response than either the void or the PD.

Can't give you any advice on power as I never ran them to the point they failed...  With the PD I'm confident to be able to push them hard...

Hi all,

cannot actually compare the drivers, but PD.186 produces a fine sound in the X1.
Even with a tiny 600 watts amp (limited and hi-passed of course).
And loud enough, too, thanx to the PDs high efficiency and +- 8mm Xmax.
