Hi guys,
I would like to have your opinion (especially Tony Wilkes because it's based on his experience with the 12S330) about this design i'm working on.
The project is a night-club with a dance floor of 28 sqm and the request of the client is no bass on the floor and speakers as discrete as possible (as usual) so i designed this triangular box for 2 pieces of 12S330 and 1 piece of coaxial 12C362 in a 3 way active system.
The volume for the bass is around 85L with BR 225cm² 25cm deep and 25L for the coaxial with BR 100cm² 10cm deep.
There will be 4 pieces hidden in the decoration as you can see in the picture below
Any useful comment or experience will be greatly appreciated

Eric looks an interesting project, from my experience for the 85L assuming nett then tune to 42hz if it is around 70L nett tune to 45hz. Just had some good results with the 12C362 but they do need quite a bit of EQ to get the best out of them. They are actually the 12S320 with a 4550 stuck on the back. Also as you will not really need the Xmax of the 12C362 have a look at the 12C262 slightly lower power but the same output as it is more efficient. Only run one of these up for a few minutes but not dissimilar to the 12C362 in sound. They would not give you ear bleeding levels in the venue but they would be loud enough whilst still maintaining sound quality to make it difficult to hear anyone speak on the dance-floor. thanks for the infos
does the 12S330 give good kick with your tuning or should i tune a bit higher to get nice kick
i prefer to have good kick and good bass impression rather than real sub that p**s off the neighbours if you see what i mean, it's always question of compromise
i'll stay with the 12C362 because the system will be used by barbarians that don't understand a word about technical issues and that little extra power handling and Xmax can maybe do the difference.
anyway, this system will be the best around, the night-club is located in Bujumbura, Burundi and all you can find here is cheap stuff except in one place (the best in town... for the moment !!!) where they have 2 EV single 18 bass and 4 tops 15"+ 1"

If you want it to sound punchy then go for 35-40L Nett per 12S330 and tune to 45hz. This still gives a usable response to 35hz. Also make sure that the ports are of sufficient area. No, the 2 x 12S330 will be fine in the same space just make the box 70L nett and as you say for the 12C362 then 20-25L is OK, actually you could probably get away with a smaller sealed box if you were happy to cross at around 120-150hz. i got your point, i'll draw the box smaller to come around 70L and tune at 45hz
just to be sure, when you say nett volume, it is excluding the driver and the ports, is that right ?
the volume for the coax is mainly determined by the depht of the speaker and the diameter of the magnet to fit inside the box, my intention was to cross around 100-120hz
when you talk about eq for the coax, is it for the mid, the high or both, around the crossover point ?

Eric, Yes nett is excluding driver, ports, braces etc. Remember as well to allow for around 25mm behind the magnet on the co-ax for the spade terminals. I assume that you will be using an LMS to look after the crossovers etc. You will need a couple of bands of PEQ on the 12" mid and about 3 on the comp to get it nice and flat. You will aso probably need a bit of delay on the bass-mid drivers but this will depend on the arrangement. Amplifier wise the 12S330 will take all of their 600w no problem, I would look to have around 1500w available per box and about 600-800 for the mids. Anything over 100w per driver on the comps is OK. i got 15mm clearance behind the comression but i have 90° spade terminals
the LMS will be an audio matrix (Ateis UAP G2) allowing control for 4 inputs (2 stereo) and 12 outputs (6 for the dance floor and 6 mono zones)
for amplifiers, i was thinking PKN or QSC, depend on the budget of the client

Hi Eric. I have built many similar enclosures where the client does not want to see the speakers. A great starting point. I have built them into fake columns like in your drw before. Cylindrical enclosures with white grilles. Nothing is really as good as bass on the floor though. It is usually easier to get the client to listen to sense. 70L Naked is a small box for 2x 12". Do you need the Mid/Hi in the middle? If it was at one end the enclosure construction would be far easier. You could easily hand them L and R. ------------- Billy Dawg. |
