Yes your right it was on ebay last week and the person who "so called bought it" has been a waste of space

I have been trying to contact him for most of the week with no joy via ebay!

So as this site seems more serious about pro equipment than ebay, I will try to sell it here

but I am really in two minds as to where or not to sell these items, I could do with the space, but I used these mixers when DJing with  the Radio 1 / John Dean Road Show years ago, and thus why I saved up for this mixer back in the late 80s.

So although this actual mixer has never been used, It has very special memories for me....

Nothing this gorgeous (despite price) gets away undetected for long!! Whether to drool or laugh is the debate here...

must say they are in incredibly good nik Thumbs Up

Yes, I look after and respect all my expensive pro equipment, but in this case, the mixer is in virgin condition.

If you look after equipment, even more so, if you don't use it

It becomes more desirable as years go on, because the mixers and amplifiers become rare, especially one in this condition,

It's like a classic car, and thus tend to be more valuable, as there are fewer in circulation

if it does not sell, I am really not over bothered,

but I do get cheesed off with people that waste time, thus I have given up with ebay

Some Advice.

The problem is Johnny,we all know on here what they are worth,we know they are a quality item, but realistically you just aren't going to get anywhere near that figure for it....if it means that much to you,you are probually best off keeping it.

Here is mine,in the factory case, which would probually only fetch around £500-ish and is as mint as yours.

Fair point, and yes your looks very nice too Clap

It's really no problem to me, as I am more than happy to keep it, the price I have listed this package for is more than a fair price for this grade, quality of kit.

For me to part with it, it's worth much more than £500! It's a pure insult to sell these items at that price, period.....

I rather be the proud owner of these two items and grow old, even if I never use the mixer,  to many great memories, back in the day,

I also attended Froggys funeral, and repaired most of his equipment for him when he was alive, including his Matamp mixers and Quasa power amps.

I have had many great moments with Froggy and all of them were due to being introduced to MatAmp equipment.

It's a pride for me to repair any MatAmp equipment in my workshop, the build quality and passion that goes in to MatAmp is not found in other equipment very often

Wow what a great thread, thank you for the link

sadly back in the 80s/90s I never took photographs when in my workshop repairing equipment,

I do today, everything is photographed,

I remember repairing a Matamp Quadra Pan mono mixer for Steve

It had a Joy Stick in the middle of the mixer and 4 mono outputs, and the joystick could give a 360 degree effect to each of the 4 speaker stacks,

I think it was a custom build between Mat & Steve, I remember it was about the same size as the super nova

Mat gave me all the circuit diagrams for the Super Nova, All The Quasa Amplifiers, and not forgetting the MatAmp Crossovers, I still have them stored safe today, and call on them on the rare occasion.

I still have a Disco Supplies Catalogue that dates back to the late 80s early 90s,

The MatAmp Super Nova mixer is listed and shown as there flag ship mixer, It was so ahead of it's time, but was never a cheap purchase!

Only for the serious connoisseur of fine DJ audio

I think Charlie Chans Night Club (Walthamstow) also boasted one of these great mixers back in the day

I'd like a supernova, I just couldnt justify paying big money for one though. It would only be a "toy" for use at home, I wouldnt want to take it out with me.

You got a disco supplies catalogue? Any chance of scanning it and posting up here?

The problem with vintage equipment is it's only worth what people will pay for it and a Supernova is not going to command a price that high no matter what the condition.
This would only really be of interest to a collector as the features on it are to restrictive for use today.

It wouldn't be hard to source another Supernova (they do come up for sale occasionally) buy a new front panel (Matamp still have a few) and hey presto new looking mixer for half the price.

The other problem with these is of course the parts are virtually impossible to find.

If you could scan or photograph the disco supplies catalogue, and post it up in the Golden oldies section on here, that would be really helpful.

I was the resident DJ from 1992, 2002 at the Epping Forest Country Club,

They had a crazy TOA system installed by John Boman Daniels, It Kicked Ass.

TOA I hear you say!, well I don't know what drivers they used? It was mad, one of the crazyest sound systems I remember in a night club of that era

The Mixer was a very rare, A System 2000 mixer (Silver) , by Formula Sound, (another very nice mixer)

I have purchased and serviced the country club Formula Sound Mixer and rebuilt it from top to bottom and even managed to purchase all new top plates from formula sound.

It look brand spanking knew, what a gem

Though my project of rebuild was not cheap, just the alps faders were a small fortune,

Replaced all new op amps throughout and full re calibrated the whole mixer,

It's looks brand new and sounds amazing.....

I am no amateur and take my electronic profession very seriously, there is very little I can not repair in the DJ world / pro AV industry, MatAmp used my services as the south England repair for MatAmp equipment back in the 80s & 90s

When I picked up this mixer from the Epping Forest Country Club it was ready for the skip, and I mean ready, It was totally trashed after 16 years of abuse, It had fault after fault, there was only a few channels working, just.. The output module was totally in trouble,

You can see If I do a Job I do it correctly, No toy town repairs with me,

I replaced, new Knobs, Faders, Facia plates, you name it, it got renewed

John, a friend of mine aquired a pair of Toa speakers in the mid 90's, at the time we were told they came out of the country club.  They were full range, 18" bass bin with a compression driver.  Still has them today - used for mobile disco's.

Did you Dj with Terry in the house or over in the jungle?

I was club side, Terry is a close friend, along with big lee,

I still DJ today with terry and lee, that TOA system was crazy, the chiminey breast in the country club was filled to the top with low power TOA amps about 300watts per channel, no fans!
But there was so many of them each driving a pair of cabs, the end result was a very loud pumping sounds system that sounded amazing, due to having so many amps driving so many cabs.

It was also the first time I had seen a professional speaker management system in a club also made by TOA

It was a crazy sound system, from a company you would not associate will nutty sound systems

Yes, I have good memories of the sound in the House, a misspent youth, loved that place, didn't like the jungle.  I remember the chiminey breast and the amps...  From memory it used to face the bar.  You could stand at the bar and see all the amps lit up.

Will be seeing Terry the weekend after next.

This is the DJ booth at Epping Forest country club in 1981 after a refit, with a Matamp Supernova! This replaced the earlier Allen and Heath production mixer which had been in use since the mid 1970's.

The 1981 refit also included three HH V-series mosfet amps,V200,V500 and V800 which replaced four prehistoric 100 watt Partridge amps!

Wow this post is just getting better and better,

Love this forum...

Memories of the country club before I was old enough to be part of it,

Shame the VU unit of the MatAmp was not mounted at an angle, It always make the super nova look so much better.

I use to repair the HH V-series mosfet amps,V200,V500 and V800

They were beasts, you could barely pick them up, but they were very reliable and bomb proof.

The country club never cut corners on kit, even back in 1981, it had the very best kit of the day

Love it Clap

I still have all the in house Epping Forest Country Club magazines with Me, Terry, & Big Lee and a host of other DJs that worked in Atlantis plastered all over them.

They printed there own in house magazine about 3 times a year informing all the clubbers of future events at the country club.

They started in one colour and then went to full colour magazines, (from 1992 to about 2000)

There are a host of memories and photos in them, If I ever get many many hours to spend, I will have a go at scanning them in.

This is the club again, before the refit, with the old 1970's DJ booth in the background....the system was so basic then, for larger nights JB's monster roadshow was hired in (two stacks of ASS concert system with JPS amplifiers, clearly visible in the background).......here with Greg Edwards at the controls of Simon Harris' modified Citronic console with Technics sl1200's shoehorned in.

The basic (pre 1981 refit) system from the mid70's was so basic, using the Allen and Heath mixer i mentioned earlier,a pair of QRK turntables with the Gray research arms, four 100w mono Partridge amps, and a set of four speakers, mounted at head height around the dancefloor, each with an electrovoice 15inch and a Gauss 1502 bullet tweeter.

Total power was only 400w...it sounded nice, but just wasnt loud enough, espacially with 500+ people in the club,

Here is one of the JB's roadshow stacks at the club hired in for an outdoor summer pool party, circa 1981.

The TOA speaker management system was called Satori if I remember correctly (or something like that)

Toa did some pretty industrial stuff back in the day. The amp's you mention (P300) were indeed bullet proof and could take just about anything you could chuck at them but only good for install because of the weight, they were 480 per channel @4ohms.

The club install speaker systems they did were well ahead of their time too, great sounding boxes but back in the late 80's a 3 way mid high was 2 grand so they didn't sell so well

More Epping forest country club sound facts.......

In 1980 there was a small function room extension for private partys out the back, next to the pool, that had installed in it,a Citronic powered Hawaii "popular" model,(in the black vinyl covering) 100 watts, running into a beautiful pair of custom speakers, finished in walnut veneer, which were bought second-hand from the Playboy club in Curzon street which closed in late 70's.

Each of these cabinets had a pair of JBL 2202 !2inch,a 2410 driver on a pepperpot lense, and a 2405 slot tweeter, and despite only been driven from a 100watt amp, sounded lovely.

For one night, myself and Simon Harris connected them up to one of my MM ap360's,and the sound was much improved.

Unfortuantly,a few months later, some plonker allowed Disco supplies in Chadwell Heath to remove the JBL's and "install" (laughably) a set of four 12 inch with peizo cabinets, which sounded bloody horendous. So much for progress.

I never did discover who ended up with those lovely veneered JBL Playboy cabinets.

I remember in about 1991 before I was resident at the Epping Forest Country Club, be asked to DJ a private function upstairs above the night club using a MATAMP mobile Disco Console that was owned by the Country Club, I can't remember what turntables were in it, may have been Garrard.

The MatAmp mixer was wide and narrow obviously designed for a mobile DJ system with twin decks,

Thus the first and pretty much last time I have seen this addition of the MatAmp range of products.

Again I assume quite rare, not seen to many of them to this day,

Would love to have seen those veneered JBL Playboy cabinets.

I will dig it out and check. It was working when I last used it (obviously). It's one of the many things I will be selling shortly. I bought it from LMC. I think they were 5K when new. SSE used to use them as well.

No, it was a 1 x 12 but the cab was slopped off towards the back (by the 12") so it could be mounted close to a ceiling they were made to be flown upside down so the horn and tweeter were at the bottom, really nicely built solid heavy cabs covered in some sort of hard grey paint/resin.
They were passive and sounded lovely I used a pair myself a few times (good thing about working in a sound shop) and they really hauled asre off a ppx900.

Simon

I worked every Splash, the bank holidays were amazing,

We would start DJing about 7 and I would slowly watch many people congregate around the pools side until about 4,500 people (Many Great Looking Girls) would all start doing crazy things.

People use to arrive by helicopters, the fields would be littered with cars, and then there were the live PA's

Michael Proctor, Allison Limeric, Jocelyn Brown  to mention a few,

The pool area would close about 10:30 then everyone would make a mad dash for the clubs, I can remember packing up my records and getting out the Club at about 4:30 in the morning after every Splash Bank Holiday.

I was asked to DJ a private party in January this year in London, as a Country Club reunion night, and the two PA's that I worked with this year were Allison Limeric, Jocelyn Brown, It was just like going back to Splash all over again, but without the pool.

They were great days,

I do, however, in line with my policy of having every "vintage" set of speakers in the world, have a pair of Toa 380SE, which were their top of the line full range box from the late 80's, and are even complete with red go faster stripes down their sides!

they are currently doing sterling service on radio 2/4 in the warehouse, driven from that studiomaster 400...they sound rather good.

We went to most of them John, they were amazing.  I remember parking the car on the grass in field behind the pool, along with the hundreds off other cars.  I'm sure I remember an old route master double decker bus loaded with a big sound system was used around the pool at one of the parties?

The reunion party sounded awesome, wish I was there!  I've been to a few of the parties that Terry and Marie have done at Mooros.

My mate has a pair of these:

http://www.toaelectronics.com/disc/manuals/480-SE_IM.pdf

Guy we bought them off early/mid 90's said they came out of the country club.  They were originally the same grey colour as the pair in your above picture but they have since been covered in speaker material...

There used to be a TOA service centre on the Hutton industrial estate, we took them there once to be serviced but that was many years ago, I think it's long gone now!

I remember The TOA Service Outlet in Hutton industrial estate,

I had a TOA 4bay Cassette deck in for repair, and to replace one of the complete Cassette mechanisms.

they were a 19" 3 or 4U Cassette decks made by TOA used by companies who wanted continuous music, the cassette bays toggled through all 1-4 cassette that were inserted.

thus before CD players were the norm

I had to go over to Hutton to pickup the replacement parts,

It seems TOA were so ahead of there time and the game in the mid 80s / 90s with club sound systems, and then seemed to disappear ...

JBL_Man, you truly have some most amazing photographs in your collection.

I never thought selling a Super Nova could be so nostalgic, after seeing this post,

I have decided not to sell the Super Nova now anyway, lol how can I after seeing the history in this post...

This post is just getting better and better, I never expected to start off this much Essex Club History.

It looks like I joined this Forum many many years to late.Cry

Here's a photo I grabbed from Google of the MatAmp disco console I was on about in an earlier post, similar to the one I used years ago owned by the country club, these look like Citronic turntables.

I just about remember when Disco Supplies was located near the tollgate where JIFS records use to be, It was about Christmas 1979/80

There were Rope Lights, Fuzz Lights, Pulsar Light Controllers and so on, I use to gaze in to that little shop windows as a young boy and be in heaven. All the disco lights would be flashing in the window and reflecting off the main center piece.... The Disco Supplies Glitter Systems, from what I can remember, the DJ consoles and speakers were all made out of fiberglass in the most amazing glitter colours.

Disco supplies were quite unique and a head of there time back in the day,

I'm sure there must be some photo around somewhere?

The late 70s for me as a young boy, so wanting to be a DJ was such an exciting time, gazing in to Disco supplies shop window...

just had no money at the age of 10, But I knew one day I would be a successful DJ and I knew electronics would be my passion for the rest of my life.

I bought my first console from Disco supplies original shop,a Citronic stereo Hawaii in 1978.

Re Glitter systems,some photos.....

Yes now that's what I'm talking about, those young boy memories have just come flooding back

Thanks for taking me back to my younger days

Re Citronic Disco consoles, I remember they use to be the Rolls Royce of disco consoles, there were many in the range to choose from.

From what I remember, there was even a later model that had 2 Technics SL1210s and a small mixer in the middle.

That early 90s Disco Supplies catalogue that I have shows a complete range of Citronic DJ consoles from what I remember.

And I use to be resident DJ at Room At The Top & Magnums before the Epping and the mixer there was a Citronic with recessed control knobs.

I think Citronic use to be manufactured in the UK, and respected kit, not so much today though, It all seem very cheap rubbish now, just my opinion.

ok hands up,i won it,i gambled and it came out ok;output group b does work though the faders are shot in the respect that the slider stems are broken but can be moved with a fingernail though i doubt i'll need to use them,mic 2 has little or no o/p on lo-z,other than that nothing audibly, yes its scruffy,a lot of the pots are stiff as are some of the sliders but no noisy ones, led displays are fine,as are all of the latching switches,a few small marks on the fascias and some of the grey knobs need attention along with some missing slider  knobs but all in more than happy compared to the pioneer i bought a while ago, relegated of course to my sm450,jap scrap!any ideas would be welcome though?

Posted By: colint

You could call Jeff at Matamp to discuss faders as there was talk of a replacement but it does/did involve a complete strip down as the fader mounting plate has to be modified for them to fit.
The only thing I can suggest for the fader knobs is to contact Cliff components in Redhill and see if they can help, I did talk to Them a while back and was supposed to send off a sample for them to match up but didn't get around to it.
Good luck!!!

You can find the contact details here but before you ring make sure you have a seat, coffee, cig's (if you use them) because they are a very friendly chatty bunch and you could be on the phone for a bit. LOL

Mention to Jeff that you heard about a conversion for the Supernova to jog his memory don't just ask for faders as you'll get a blank.

I Think most were loaded with Fane's but I did mod a few pairs many years ago using JBL E120's made a huge difference with a nice pair of horns on top.
There was also a pair loaded with RCF's wizzer cones I did some work on back in the 80's.

Yep,Colin is correct,Fanes originally,(twin cone whizzers) those in the above cabs don't look original, neither does that peizo which i think has been stuffed in as an after thought?

Martin is spot-on,50 quid's worth.

Bet they sounded sweet with K120's Col.

I knew it was a 120 of some description Ian (must be the dementia creeping in) they were a hell of a lot louder for sure, Mr P had a fair supply of drivers in the stock room nearly all of them quality units too so all sorts of drivers crept into all sorts of cabs we had a pair of HH Pro150's loaded with E140's with the crappy bullet removed as a port in the hire stock too they worked nice with a horn on top !.

No not really the guy used them with some W bins so they were more mid than anything else but they were very loud considering the amount of power they got.

Guys.

Just seen this post.  Charlie Chans AND the Eppping Forest Country Club both had Matamps - I used them both!  I also took the Chans picture and the EFCC 1981 picture of the lit up dance floor and also the one with 'Manhattans' written above the DJ stand (the DJ in the pic was a guy called Tony Jenkins) in the posts of 31st October 2012 earlier on in this thread.  I worked at EFCC between 1981 -84 and at Chans from when it opened in 1984 through to 1995.  Great times.
