Note - NOT your PA you store/use in your house!
kind of curious to see what people use. I know some use standard modest commercial systems like TonyASS's Bose, others use hifi type domestic units from standard to 'audiophile' grade, others have DIY hifi/amps/cabs, others studio kit, etc etc etc......
what you got?

Ask me again in a year! Renovating the lounge early 2013, plan is to build my own 5.1 system. Just finishing off a few boxes for my brother and going for a gloss finish. So far, so good. if that works well then I will apply the same technique to my lounge efforts.
At the moment it's an old Denon AVR amp that only does prologic but good enough for me, and a cheapy Gale 5.1 system. Original modded xbox to run XBMC as a media server. New setup will have a true HTPC running the latest XBMC.

Just build two small sattelies for my bedroom. Each houses 4 small 2'' fullrange Peerless please -830970 for mid (which have a surprisingly flat response) and then a beyma T2030 dome tweeter above them. A single sattelite is powered actively by a 2x12w dual channel TDA2616 based amp module . One channel driving the mid and one driving the high, protected by a small bulb and cap. Underneath it are dynacord BR subs with a light 12'' cone.
Crossing it all actively with a dcx at around 450Hz and 11kHz. Sounds superb, some of the best i've ever heard, although i'm thinking of upgrading the amps.
------------- Best regards, Teun.

I'm thinking about building a 3 way system for home use, using a reggae mini-preamp and some small Crest amps. For bass probably some 8" or 10" Volt drivers in reflex cabs.
Does anyone have some ideas for mids and tops in this set up?

I'll upload some pics tomorrow but my set up consists of a pair of monitor audio rs6's. Powering them is a verynice denon pma-1500ae.
Player wise I've got a technics SL-L1 which is as old as me. It's an old schol automatic turntable which sounds quite nice. Also got a phono to jack for playing tunes off the laptop

I know this is arguable but it was at first designed for a bit of "extra bass" for the basement. It got a bit out of hand though, and before we knew it we just abandoned spending our student loans on going out and instead on building a little system! It is now our rig, but as you can see in the picture, it was just our basement Hifi for whenever we fancied a cheeky mix for 6 months!

I'll get some pics soon my setup is currently
Samsung Series 6 LED TV Samsung BPD1600 Player WD HDTV Player
Yammy Z7 AV Amp 6x Proac Response Speakers + custom stands 1x Proac Response D Centre 2x Proac Hexa Subs 2x Buttkickers
Next time I have money burning a hole on my pocket I'll be grabbing some amps so I can biamp everything. The Yammy is capable of processing the lot. But I'll be waiting a long time as that's 14ch of amplification. And then upgrade the TV. To be honest I don't I'm that into it anymore. It already sounds amazing so I'm not wanting anything. It's just more for the visuals of having a rack full of pretty amps.

haha yeah they are very nice speakers, especially for the price of them. Don't bother with the bronze range of the monitor audios, you might as well go to richer sounds if you want that kind of quality.
The RS6's which I've got are a massive step up from them, really great quality hifi sound. I did have the pleasure of listening to the platinum range floor standers from monitor audio, powered by chord mono block amps, now that was something special, but only for millionaires that kind of system

Looking good Chris, what are they?
My latest noise making device is too small to get to mine, but the 2 noise making devices before that are of the age where cones and tweeters are in great danger, so my Mission 753's are hidden away at the moment, replaced by some OHM BootiQues!
|

They were designed from scratch and existed as MDF prototypes for about 2 years before being finally built out of ply. There's a matching 19" rack with turntable recess on top just to the right out of shot.
10" is a special order Volt BM2500 in 4 Ohm. Midrange is Tang Band Neo 3" soft dome and Tang Band again for the ribbon. The magnet is so strong on the ribbon that if you put a drawing pin on the top of the cab it moves to directly above the tweeter! Crossover points at 400Hz and about 5kHz, biamp with passive mid-high.
I keep saying to the wife that when the time comes I can just erect a fence around the speakers but she keeps telling me I need to put grills on them...

Cheers, I should take some better pictures of them and the rack. PMC, ATC, Quested was definitely the kind of thing I had in mind when I designed them. I stopped short of doing a PMC style transmission line although they look like they could be. They just have a long L-shaped port.
The problem of having very accurate speakers is that you then start finding that things like having a chair on one side of the room and not the other skews the stereo image! Maybe one day I'll have a room I can put them in which will do them justice.

Maybe not snake oil but I need to get round to making a quilt (decorative sound absorbtion device) to hang on the wall behind my head!
I've also got some 8", 2",1" soft dome hifi/monitors I built which live at a mates house and some 5"+1" Beyma loaded bookshelf cabs in the office here. The desk, shelves and hi-fi cabs are all stained and danish oiled birch ply in a similar colour to the main cabs in the lounge!

LG 50 inch Plasma.
Arcam THX 7.1 Receiver, I wanted compact single box with good sound.
Arcam DVD
Monitor Audio HD 270 main, 225 centre, 180 rears and 360 sub.
As for fencing..... Our daughter climbed on top of a second fireguard which was just protecting tv ect got the little grill off the tweeter and thought the Gold coloured tweeter was an opportunity not to be missed. She poked 3 of them...lol. Still sounds lovely though so heyho.

I've been using this for the past 18 months or so, the somewhat bizarre/space-wasting design (it's 3U) was due to a change of mind halfway through the project! But it works fine nonetheless :) It's a pair of LM3886 monoblocks that power a pair of Monitor BX1 on my desk, with a DIY sub beneath powered from a bridged Samson 120a. And before anybody complains about the diameter of the output wires, they're plenty thick enough for the rated max output of the amps (which I never get close to anyway!).
I was originally going to use them with this pair of cabs I made with some cheap Tang Band drivers, but I screwed up the design (1st port resonance at 600Hz or something) so they don't sound too good...

Looking tidy, DIY audio have just released a new range of Italian HiFi chassis enclosures. Pricy but pretty. I'll need to make some more soon. I have a couple DIY channels using bridged P3As with chunky individual PSUs but it's time to move on and design my own amplifier to run the forthcoming DIY sub.
Not sure what's going on with the post above, preliminary room DIY mock ups?

Ive got my eye on the New Offering from denon. The pma2020, looks an absolute beast. Not sure what kind of price I'd get though if I sold my pma1500 but the 2020 would be a nice upgrade.
Cant say I've ever fancied going down the home made route, I always think hifi should be left to the professional's with things like amps

You might be surprised what level of quality can be achieved from a homemade amplifier that concentrates on the basics and uses high quality components. But if you have no idea at all about how to build and construct one you're best off starting small. There are some class A kits out there that a child could put together.

Hmm, not really 'into' them, they are just some of the first I've bought I didn't want to spend a fortune on drivers just to find I was crap at making speakers so started off with some 3"ers, the others are 4"ers and actually sound really nice Their main downside is the entire range has a really low power handling I've since got some Peerless 5", Fountek 3" a Vibe 6x9 car thing and a Beyma 8" coax to power future projects I will be using the 3" again though at some point, they are pretty nice and you can get a good sound out of them. Poor sensitivity though :(

I use a Rega planar I brought in the Cornflake shop back in the nineties, although saying that I just brought a Lenco GL75 so I can play my 78's. There was a twin deck recently with GL75s fitted came up recently that looked very smart.

Ha! I bought my first proper hi-fi with my second months pay! My first went on a proper guitar! That was 35 years ago and I still have both!

Nothing very exciting I'm afraid! Its an acoustic Yamaha FG335. I didn't get into electrics till much later when I became a bass player. Cost £110 brand new which was a lot to me then but it was probably still a fairly budget guitar at the time.

and yes, I'm very ashamed to admit I purchased hugely overpriced 'HIFI' stands

But they're purdy and don't resonate when full of B&Q dry sand

I'm a fan of ribbon tweeters, what are they?

They are Adam S4A monitors, not sure on the ribbon mid/hi components but I assume they are of their own design. They are quad-amped active boxes, never heard a ribbon speaker before these but it is nothing like any other system I've heard, really smooth, no harshness at all (at least at the levels I've been able to turn them up to in my house..) and if you sit in the middle and close your eyes the stereo imaging is crazy. 101% impressed, I'll be keeping these for a long time.

Pasi has designed a prototype box for a friend of ours that uses a huge ribbon driver, with dual 6" mids/woofer. Sounds bloody lovely.

That's interesting! As I was going to purchase the ADAM A7X monitors but then I discovered EVE (no joke), its now the rival company to ADAM, for those that don't know! They used to be as one.
Went for the SC207's.

| Love those yammies. When I bought my current ARs (30years ago) I had the choice of the ARs, JBL L212s or the NS1000s. It was a close run thing but the yammies would have been a better financial investment - they still fetch very high prices on the s/h market.

okay that is just stupid. Praise and like all you want, but there cannot be a single practical use or necessity for that other than showing how large his wallet is.
What is even more stupid is that wood looks like cheap 18mm spruce plywood and the cab to be barely braced.

Hmmm - a bad sounding sauna. I suppose if you don't understand how such things work that is what you would do - but looks like money overcame common sense in this case.

Well in fairness someone who has the ability to plan and implement that install must have thought about it quite a lot. DIYaudio is hardly where you go to show off what you just bought. If someone can afford it and wants to build it, good luck

I was always curious as to why P.A companies don't embrace new/newish that is being used in the most recent studio monitor design/tech. Such as ribbon tweeters etc. Maybe it is and I have missed the boat.
I have always loved the sound of the Adams and would love to hear a p.a version.
Top studio monitor r&d always seek the best sound and curious as to what the p.a market/companies thinks about/follow this...
