NJD Datamoons. One of the best budget lighting effect ever produced IMO
not mine but to show how cheap they can be picked up

If you do decide to go for a datamoon, the best ones are the oldest ones with 1/4" jack sockets for the DMX.

I just sold some galactic moons. Couldn't get on with them, are the data moons similar
|

Date Posted: 27 February 2013 at 10:09pm
Yeah more or less. Theres a few differences, for example datamoons have a 250w lamp rather than the 150w in the galactic moon but otherwise pretty much the same type of effect. I have 5 datamoons and 14 abstract scanners here!

Or Martin Destroyers, or for best sound to light Abstract Twister 4's (or a later variant)
Steer clear of the Ego's unless you like expensive repairs or replacements of main boards.

Both 250 halogen watt and moon flower types. YouTube it mate. Maybe comes down to optics and colour. Always used them in master and slave mode.

I have a load of destroyers, dirt cheap, bright enough, cheap to fix if they go wrong (just buy a load of them and put a couple aside for spare parts) oh and the lamps are not too expensive either.
the only thing that can't really be fixed is the stepper motors, sometimes you can give the end bell a wiggle around and they come back to life, but most of the time you need to replace them.
The punisher is the same as the destroyer, but it has a 'shake' effect. never used one myself.

What's the going rate for punisher and destroyers?

No idea what the going rate is for them, but I have 6 Destroyers, all in very good cosmetic condition. I may be prepared to let a couple go, how soon would you want them? (I've done my books for this year and could do with not taking any more money before 5th April to keep the tax bill down!)
They did Destroyers/Punishers in 2 versions, one with an ELC lamp and one with a fixed reflector and the cheaper M33 capsule lamp. They did a conversion kit at one point.
Mine are all M33 versions due to the cheaper lamp costs (and same as the Solar 250 so easier lamp stock to manage)
Both Punishers and Destroyers need the lamp relay replacing periodically, it either welds itself closed or open (e.g. lamp always on or doesn't switch on and no click heard when powered up) They're dirt cheap and easy to replace if you can hold a soldering iron without burning your fingers
Destroyers are 5 channel (although I've seen ones which like to have 6 channels when patched) and can run in 1 channel, 5 channel or sound to light mode. Punishers are 6 channel and will run in 1 channel, 6 channel and auto mode (no sound to light!) despite them being based on essentially the same control board.
That said, I did have a Punisher that ran sound to light! So there are hacks and bodges and different official versions out there!

can you not scan an old board and have them knocked up at 10 a penny and then just buy all componants from ebay or the like and make your own boards?
surely the pic/eeprom can be copied and then uploaded to new chips. save your self a packet and keep your lights alive.
£175 a board?... surley you could make 4-5 of your own for that price and then 8-10 more for another 175.

i never looked into it, the problem is when one part on the board gives up, its like a chain reaction, and you just kepp chasing the faults all over the board..... The ego replaced the destroyer, and this was replaced by the current range.....

ooooh!.... just needs better protection i suppose. or better "over-rated" parts.
its like wen i get in broken computers.... i end up stripping them rite back and never letting the pc win lol
it might be like amps and speakers.... the parts are rated just perfect for the use... when what they really need is head room. i.e not 1/4watt resistors but 1/2 watt ones... not a 70VA transformer but an 800VA one. little things. again im just thinking out loud. try rebuilding one of the working boards as a test with a few choise up-rated components.

holy crap!!! ok kinda though the board was gonna be half that size lol... and theres alot of surface mount on there too....
ok i take it back.. shoot it... shoot it in the face!!
i'd need full on scmatics for that and a fair few days of testing and retesting... i see why youv just been throwing them out. very cluttered board. have you been running these via DMX?

Only the 'X' version Ego's (4,5 and 6 iirc) were DMX controllable. The 1,2 and 3 were just sound to light and linkable with a mini jack lead.
From what I've heard the other big proplem with the Ego boards is that they're multilayer PCB's, so there's also a load of internal tracks its difficult to see what's going on with.
