I made four trap bandpass 15 horns once and it was a GIANT PAIN IN THE ARSE. And they only had three "difficult" panels in them. A trap scoop scares me; the mitres...the endless compound mitres...arrrgh! For people with Autocad, CNC and masochistic tendencies only, IMO.

I don't know for sure, but at a guess it may help make it a bit more directional when grouped. Or it could just be that its for aesthetic purposes and to help arraying them, so they would have a specific kick/top combination of the same shape. They are certainly discontinued now anyway.

I've done a 21 trap scoop, it's the bottom end of the Reflekta system. and you don't need any of those things you mentioned. ( apart from the Masochistic tendencies.)

There is no reason why a Trap Scoop will sound any worse than a standard cab. It's all in the design and structure, The expansion works out well. You just have to get your starting point worked out. Trap boxes are more horn like than rectangular boxes. I've only done 21's which were much smaller than my previous 21" standard Scoop, and these were compromised to fit in with the box size of the Reflekta system. Being able to do this gave me Sub, Bass and `Mid/Hi cabs which were all identical sizes.
No one, to my knowledge complained about the cabs. There was ten of them in the Astoria for many years until it closed. All sorts of Music was covered in that Venue.
It needs to be a heavy box though.

Well this was my earlier point about them, They may only be shaped this way so they would match up with a specific Kick/Top combination also produced by the manufacturer.

Geometrically, you could design them to have proper expansion throughout the horn, but it would definitely be harder to design them and you certainly would not want to take an existing rectangle box and taper the back or you would have poor or negative expansion until the fold made the turn at the back wall.  Expansion from that back corner toward the mouth could work out well though.  Really though I think if you wanted to torture yourself doing a trap folded horn, I would do something that plays higher than a scoop, like a FLH so you could take advantage of the higher frequencies' wider dispersion.  Sub frequencies are omnidirectional anyhow which is really where a scoop shines, so not worth the bother having splayed scoops unless (as mentioned above) it is to have a matching splay for the kicks.

From the throat, it's all expansion. After the throat part you only have to make sure that the space at the top is bigger than the space at the throat by using a certain Angle, and by doing this you end up with the correct board for the last bit of the Horn before the mouth part happens. If you start to draw these things out full size on a Board as I do, it will fall into place.
