The mid fits in the hole, but the sub would need to be huge to fit the top too!

Kicking myself that I wasn't at Kelburn when some of these cabs were playing :(

Yeah, unfortunately i couldn't find a way to make the top fit in the mid in the sub, whilst keeping dispersion and general design principles..

i'll try and upload a little vid in a bit.

Its a superb looking system.  Whats in the mids? Is it a 12"?   Did you find the mids went low enough to meet the terra horns so no more use for the old upper bass horns anymore?

Where are you crossing over?  Are you running the terra horns higher than would otherwise be possible due to the shape / curve of the horn?

They dont half look pretty, curves in the right placesWink

Thanks,

I'm crossing the terra's and mids at 121hz. Meta mids are a 12" on a 100hz fc horn, and they cross perfectly at 121hz, whilst still having that nice snap of the snare drum.  I did play with porting them, but couldn't get it to work in the form factor to any benefit, and a simple tractrix thats long enough sounds nicer.

I wanted to keep it simple if possible and going three way has many benefits, like getting off axis response even across all the cabinets, lighter, and less sources blending together to mess up the phase and impulse  responses.

I was initially a bit worried if the mids could keep up, but running all four off an HHV800 proved that to be unfounded! I forgot to get my spl meter out, but sims show 135dB with four cabs in free space and only 200w each.. The terra's play nicely up higher due to the smooth contours, no 180 doglegs in the throat, so thats no problem, could probably go higher, but i think the frequency distribution works well across the cabs currently.

In 2009 a driver had somehow become damaged in transit. The coil was probably old and charred and the shaking of the truck's suspension killed it. It kind of ruined the sound because it moved in sympathy and made a horrible scratching sound. I took the driver out eventually, which is no fun when it's upside down inside a row of terrahorns. They were humming nicely in 2008 though.

I wonder if it's worth using a shorting cable for cabs during transit.. It won't stop shifting magnets but could have helped stop the suspension let the VC hit the backplate on a big bump.. or just get a truck with nice suspension..Geek

Coincidentally, from back in my yoof, the classic soundlab stack photo from Trefil quarry was to the left in the photo below of where we had set up the day before, they asked if we minded them setting up and we just sat and laughed at them LOL this was all pre terrahorn days ofcourse..

That's one funny looking piano you've been playing!  They are easy to move around, and braced where needed to stop panel resonances, all 24mm ply would do is make them stupidly heavy, but if you were paying i can do that. Smile

Currently only 8, and i have four, but the world needs more, so i'm about to start building a run of 8-10, and i'm selling my original demo four (£900ea) to help fund it and make space, for the new stock.

The other four apparently have just been sold, as the soundsystem who had them said they were too powerful, and they made a girl violently sick from the bass pressure Tongue.

I hope you don't think they were actually anything to do with me! but i hope they got a really good deal buying that many!?Confused

Bearing in mind it was probably over 10 years ago, my hazy memory of them is it was perhaps a little incoherant and messy sounding as you would imagine, i also remember it being really harsh and screachy and wondering how the crew that put it up could dance infront of it, but there was a bit of upper bass due to all the cabs, just not very nice overall...

Funny reading through this -  I was at trefil too and infact El (login 4) took that pic of the stack of sound lab. I can't remember how it sounded but I remember the guy running it hot wiring directly into a 3 phase genny outlet to fire it all up, twigs and all poked in - scary!

The boys up the road from me I believe bought the 4 terra horns and took them miles into no mans to sound check, glad I'm not the only one who gets sick all over the cabs Confused but shame they are going - was hoping to hear them.

Given their size and the amount of space that would take up, in my experience doing similar sized stacks of FLH I think that might be less impressive than you'd expect unless it's planned and set up with plenty of time to tweak.

Not sure what 24 terras would be like, but 8 is certainly massively impressive compared to just four.

Tom, the three phase and twigs sounds special!, i didn't clock that, did the guy that ran it call himself wizard, or is that my imagination?

I've had many a good night at Trefil but unfortunately its now inaccessible as they only open the gate during weekdays and even if you did get up there its all changed, they've dumped tons and tons of earth and huge rocks up there so there is literally no where to put a rig anymore.Cry

Thanks,

The Dock story is a long one!.. but, brick built in late 1800's, it had been given free to Thames Water in the 80's, closed to the public, then left derelict and polluted, squatted by a massive building contractor, and i've helped with the charity set things up, to return it to use as moorings.

We first got a community boat, used for various things, and it's on the land here temporarily as a venue. The goal is to get the land around the dock opened up again permanently, as public space and arts venue/s, as a support to a self sustaining creative quarter in a neglected part of east London. We are in the process of cleaning it up and making safe, but hire out various parts for different events, and sometimes I can get the whole system out Smile.

Some may know i have a Barge with my workshop in, and i pay the charity to moor outside the dock, whilst we try to raise funds to open up the dock, and the new public space/footpaths...

oops. i need to go and babysit a folk band in the community boat tonight..

Thats kind of it though, we have few residents nearby so having a massive outdoor system is not too much of a problem, and the acoustics as the sound reverberates down the dock is amazing.

Amazing rig! And great venue what's the story with the dock?

Pretty much what we're trying to do with the town hall. I keep saying I'll pop down but for one reason or another I keep on flaking. Video looks great though.

What is the cover that you guys have used? Is it simply being held up by wind or is there a central pole?

You're probably talking about the parachute? No pole just, hung.

Here's another video, from another sound night we did here, with better shots of the space and a few speaker shots:

Thanks Tony, the concept evolved over time and testing to something that I'm now really happy with.
