Subject: SMT 212 building

Hello All,

After a few weeks working on various projects since I finished the first pair of 186 horns I built for my son:  http://forum.speakerplans.com/newbie-building-186-horns-finished_topic84892.html" rel="nofollow - http://forum.speakerplans.com/newbie-building-186-horns-finished_topic84892.html  , this is time to be back in the workshop to start building the tops.

My choice is to build a pair of SMT 212 to fit 2 pairs of 186 horn.

I modified a bit the design to add handles, a curved grid like the one I used for the 186 and D rings, just in case of we need them to flown the tops from trussing.

As drivers, I selected these components:

- 4 Beyma 12MI100  http://profesional.beyma.com/pdf/12MI100E.pdf" rel="nofollow - http://profesional.beyma.com/pdf/12MI100E.pdf
- 2 Compression P Audio BM-D750 Serie 2  http://www.p-audio.co.uk/pdf/BM-D750.pdf" rel="nofollow - http://www.p-audio.co.uk/pdf/BM-D750.pdf
- 2 Horn P Audio PH-3223  http://www.p-audio.co.uk/pdf/PH-3223.pdf" rel="nofollow - http://www.p-audio.co.uk/pdf/PH-3223.pdf

Once fully finished, the system will look like this:

Here is my cut sheet for 3 square panels of 15mm 11 ply:

4 hours of workshop work Today:

Create template for the grid round section:

Cut the parts:

Prepare holes for D rings:

Use template for the round part:

A first fast cut with jigsaw:

And finished with router:

Holes for D-Rings finished:

A few parts ready for assembly and all the templates in the background:

Next workshop time will be on Friday Smile

Nice work space! Might have to look at making a table like that - is it sacrificial (designed to be cut through)?

Yes, this is a sacrifical design and this is very easy to work on it. You can also screw by the bottom.

Hello All,

even on Sunday, I worked a few hours to drill all required holes, insert all nuts, paint one cab and finish it. Thanks to Warnex paint to dry very quickly Wink

I worked very fast and didn't took many pictures. I tested one cab this morning and the result is not bad at all. At least at 30% Master in my garage Confused

Good catch Wink. I preferred to put them reverted because, in the right side, I was not able to insert the driver and screw it.

carrying them upside down probably won't be a problem hehe. looks great. i have single 12" of these, i should have put grill mounts like you.. i've always felt like mine needed bracing of some kind in the front.

they look great though. good job.

Hello All,

Finished the second cab a few days ago but didn't get time to took pictures.

Here is a test I made in the garage. The system sound great even with the Behringer stuffs into the rack.

Last step for next week will be to paint and fix the grids.

Have a great week-end Smile

Processor will be the next step.

What can you give as a guidance?

I guess this is like the amp, this is better to get an used Driverack 260  than a new PA+ or Behringer Omnidrive.

What is the alternatives in the 500 Euros range (new or used)?

in honesty, id just get a Behringer DCX - the extra money spent makes very little difference up to XTA/Lake kind of standards.

There are very favorable reviews of the DB mark units, which in the UK are distributed by member 'Bee', not sure if they can be had your way or not. If you were fancying getting an import, look at the SAE amplifiers Bee also has, they also have received brilliant reviews, and at the prices they are, are brilliant value for their spec.

That's a Great job an inspiration for us here in the US and not using a CNC machine even makes it challenging with that nice Festool saw. Cutlist is nice too, just a thought if I had to build these I would consider putting BMS 4592 on tops just my $.02. Very nice job man!Wink

But once again, fantastic job. Well done

I'm not carpenter by trade at all, I'm working in information technology.

This was only the second pair of speaker I was building. So we will say Festool helped me a lot ;-)

Thanks for your comments.

Behringer DCX are you guys serieus ?
He was talking about a DBX 260, way beter in sound then the Behringer!
DBX 260 sounds beter then the DBX driverack PA,
Or a BSS omnidrive or BSS 366T is a good option for around 350 Euro in Belgium (anno 2016)

You are the one who should be wondering if you are serious.
Behringer DCX is the best processor money can buy unless you are willing to part with Xillica money... which is a step up of 3 to 4 times the price of a DCX.
There is a lot of documented information on here regarding this topic. You are free to introduce your personal opinion, but dont present it like facts.
Facts are widespread both on the web and here as well.

Also, this topic is over two years old now, i think the TS has found a processor by now.

Just to make sure people are aware, back in 2009 when the post you linked to was written, the Berry DCX was a great processor and great value for money. Think most people would now agree that these days, the db Mark line of processors is a good improvement on the DCX for similar money.  The db Mark XCA range is a wee step up and a few more features, but then yeah, your really up to processors in the £1000 mark to see big improvements, and the Xilica in particular as you end up with FIR processing and all pass filters.

All good and all, the dbmark may be a good unit, but is not available widespread outside the uk or this forum whilst a dcx you can buy on every corner of the street in every country around the globe. So as good as it may be, i dont consider it a serious competitor actually for the time being.

Agree. DB mark not so widely available. Also I don't think in any way it's a competitor.

Hey

Yeah agree about the availability. While everyone agrees it's a noticeable improvement in sound quality (most posts on here give that opinion of you have a search) it's not quite as widely available it's true.

Should help now that Blue Aran stock them though, so should see quite a few more out and about

Monacor DSM 48Lan is an upgrade (and imo the "first" really worth it) over Behringer DCX as it has:
+ 4 ins 8 outs
+ allpass filters
+ crossover filters on the inputs
+ peak limiter and compressor for better driver protection
+ more processing power (10 PEQs per in and out channel)
+ a good software (ipad, mac or pc)
+ 4 different access levels with seperate passwords
+ the SUM signal is changed when an input channel building the sum is changed (! on a DCX, SUM is treated as a "seperate input channel" !)
+ it can be adjusted while playing without making a sound!

- no DEQ
- settings on the unit itself (without the software) are not that intuitive
- not many around
- 650€ (thats still a bargain!)

Its an AllDSP unit.

For dry hire where 3/6 is sufficient, there is simply NO competitor to the DCX.
Name a DSP with dynamic EQs. Is it 4000€+? No? Is it 1500€+ ? No? Its a DCX then Cool

Corell called it the first real upgrade step from DCX. Upgrade in performance, but not at the same pricepoint.

yes, i am comparing a 280€ unit to a 650€ unit. I have not hidden this fact. I own 3 DCX and i love them. where is the problem?
