Subject: Advice on new 15" Horn

I wanted to design a basshorn doing 40Hz in a stack of 4 but also be usefull in singles or double stacks (lacking the "dip" in response).
The driver i choose is the 18sound 15LW2400.
Due to beeing a 15" i guess it will play quite high up and be fast and punchy.
Its rated at 1200w and has 10mm xmax. I see no disadvantage compared to a 18" in a horn.

Anyway, here is what i came up with:
90x 50x 90 cm (405l), so way smaller than WSX etc...

http://www.audiofotos.eu/display-i1917b7rapn.html" rel="nofollow">

The driver is reverse loaded to minimize power compression losses. It can handle the full 1200 w RMS till xmax is reached.
also, it has a lot of 90° and 45° angles, which should make it easier for DIY.

Plot in 2 and 0,5 pi :

http://www.audiofotos.eu/display-i1918b0e58i.html" rel="nofollow">

its not "flat" in 2pi, but with the right Low pass filter, its 103db/w/m 43-150Hz -3db.
surely, if you only ever use single bass bins, you wont go for a horn, so see it as a compromise (as allways...).

edit: it can be made totally flat in singles by making it 10cm higher and 5cm deeper and leave the rest as it is. (475l)

Please share your thoughts!

If anyone is interested in confirming my simulations, please write me and i will send you the sketchup file ;)

Will post all the dimensions to build it for private usage after im sure it works the way it should!

Looks good, i like the layout,  it seems there a big step in expansion at the 180 degree bend though?  Or is that just me?

it is and thats the whole point to get the respons smooth in singles ;)

Like it, been working on a dual 15" folded horn myself. Not as good with the technical stuff like you though.

without seeing the sim inputs it's hard to say for sure but I'm a bit suspect of your 'flat' response. it does look like there is no dip but I suspect this is because it isn't reactance annulled so there is no peak at 45Hz. 102dB 1w/1m @ 60Hz is ok but nothing special.

what happens if you move the back panel in 10cm? does sensitivity and excursion at 60Hz get worse or does it just make response at 45Hz better?

102dB 1w/1m @ 60Hz is ok but nothing special.  i know, for me there is nothing special in bass cabs at all ;) its all about finding the best compromise in size/low end/ SPL/ size of stack...

what happens if you move the back panel in 10cm? does sensitivity and excursion at 60Hz get worse or does it just make response at 45Hz better?  it "adds" a little between 45 and 70hz, so 103db flat ;)

thanks for the input !

corell, please pass on that sketchup file if you'd like some feedback on sims.

I  would like to sim your cab with another 15" driver that i have laying arround.Could you pass the info on bassmnc80 at yahoo.com.
Thank you,
Daniel

Any new developments in this project?

Im afraid im Not able to build a proto in the Moment, sorry.
Simon confirmed my simulations but i would still be happy to get some feedback about the reverse loading etc.

Rcf 15x401 also looks really promising in this one

Nice design corell I would like to build some but I am looking to build an 18" version that would go a little lower and beat the pants of the WSX or even a Startec type folded 18". Can you maybe make it a little taller and a little longer to fit a cheap Eminence 18" woofer like Omega or a Faital 18" neo to make it lighter cab? Looks good though I'd like to build some in 15 mm but in 18" version? Thanks!

BASS, how low can you go!

You probably don't want 15 mm playing super low. you want rigid heavy wood so you don't lose energy to vibration. I know BFM uses 15mm in his folded horns, but then they are pretty extensively braced to make up for it. Personally I would take the weight, and still brace intelligently.

12 mm actually, and that's based around relatively low powered drivers

My only observations about this Design, is that it is more or less follows the path of a Scoop Bin, with the exception of how the Speaker is loaded. So to me it looks like a scoop without the Direct radiating part. Do you think there will be an extra advantage with this design over and above the normal Scoop design. Due to compression loading, I realise it would sound different from a Scoop, but just wondering how they would perform side by side. Looks like an interesting Mod though.

It can be used as a one way bass solution. It doesn't have that inevitable dip that scoops have where the horn and the direct radiator are 180 degrees out of phase.

And to give the full picture, where that dip happens, is usually outside of the Sub range. It is in mine anyway.

Must say for my kind of music (techno) i have never been interested in scoops at all, so did not think about it yet.
My major design goal was a one-way bass hitting 40Hz. next one was to make it as flat as possible in singles without losing the smooth graph in a stack of 4. Then i thought : why not cooling the magnet?! The folding also enables you to put wheels in the lower corner and handles in the upper one to push/pull it.
My questions now would be what you guys would change and if and why you would prefer this one to WSX and similar.  I really want it to be an interesting option for DIY builders, so i ask for your help as your obviously part of them.
If i would make it for myself to earn money, i wouldnt do so^^

Ok my previous post maybe a little too far fetch, I understand what the cab's purpose by rereading your first post. I am just curious have you simulate this design with another 15" cheaper woofer readily available here in the US like Eminence or even Dayton Pro woofers available through MCM Electronics? Just curious corell so I can build one and measure it? Thanks!

send me the TSP of your intended woofer and i will check it ;)

RCF 15X401 seems to be pretty cheap for its specs i think, but if thats not available, i will check others.
we will have a chat via FB ;)
